Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. The proper measurement procedure of propeller shaft (driveshaft) U-joint Working Angles. A U-Joint working angle is the difference between the angles of the two pieces the U-Joint connects together. For best results, working angles should be equal for each set (pair) of U-Joints).
Timeline:
0:00 Introduction
1:06 Theory of working angles
1:47 Measuring the angle of the pinion gear = 2.8 degrees
3:00 Measuring the angle of the rear driveshaft = 1.8 degrees
3:05 Working angle calculation of the rear u-joint = (2.8 - 1.8 = 1.0 degrees)
4:05 Working angle calculation of the center u-joint = (4.6 - 1.8 = 2.8 degrees) Out-of-specification
4:54 How to repair working angle problems
5:50 Typically, the odd u-joint working angle needs to be kept at 0.5 degrees or less, but not 0 degrees.
6:15 The angle of the transfer case output shaft = 3.9 degrees
6:32 Calculating the odd u-joint working angle (4.6 - 3.9 = 0.7 degrees)
7:25 How the front sections of a multiple piece driveline are to be aligned
8:45 Summary of working angle calculations
9:28 How to correct improper working angles
10:30 Results of improper working angles, bad u-joints, or improper u-joint phasing
