Once upon a time, a long, long time ago in fact, I was asked exactly how Witchers are made. What is the Trial of the Grasses, exactly? So I've decided to create a little mini-series where I delve deeper into Witchers, how they are made, what makes them tick and everything else surrounding this warrior caste.
In this first part, we talk about the creation of Witchers and the bloodbath that destroyed Kaer Morhen forever.
Maybe the sorcerers are mad because they got into an argument with a witcher once and the witcher went "why don't you write a book about it", and so he did.
"Hey Bird! You butchered the pronunciation of Caer a Muirehen!" Probably yes.
"Hey Bird! You said "visit her" when it's supposed to be "visit him"!" Yes, yes I did that.
"Hey Bird! Vesemir is having a stroke in the video somewhere!" No that's just how he eats I'm afraid.
My Witcher lore videos are not meant to replace playing the game series or reading the books. Seriously, the novels are really good and I couldn't possibly convey every detail by just telling you about the events and characters. Go read the books, play the games, then come back to tell me how awesome the Witcher series is.

Late to the party but here's my theory. Before witchers, there were two ways to deal with monsters. The first was to gather several dozen well armed and trained men. The second was to get a mage. A single mage could kill a monster, which was cheaper and more likely to succeed than a few dozen men. Plus, where steel was ineffective (wraiths particularly) a mage had to be involved. All the sudden there are possibly a hundred or more professional monster killers in the world. Now people don't have to rely on mages, due to competition. Mages would have lost their authority and esteem in the world, which we've seen means life and death to some. So the mages created the rumors about witchers, but when this didn't work they manipulated the peasants into attacking Witcher schools. So pretty much mages were afraid witchers would replace them. The behavior of The Lodge is the basis of my theory.

That's pretty solid actually, especially since we already know mages don't like witchers for using "magic" as well!

@midgetydeath well said and true but just like all witchers aren't the same all mages wouldn't be the same either. Perhaps majority of them were in support of witchers but a minority hated them for their own reasons and thus planned the massacre.

I don't think Witchers lose the emotions themselves, but the ability to use them. When Vesemir... ehum... Geralt tells Ciri that he [physically] cannot cry, he doesn't know how to, but you can clearly see shock and sadness on his face. Regis responds to Geralt saying "No emotions. Mutations, remember?" by saying "Ah, yes. The excuse you always go to." To which Geralt simply grunts.
@Tmanowns
@Tmanowns 4 жыл бұрын
@Fresh Beginnings I imagine that is more due to them having emotions and empathy beaten out of them in order to become a child soldier. Maybe their emotions are dampened so they do not let them cause hesitation in battle. In general, you put anyone through the childhood witchers went through, and they'll likely end up acting like Geralt: unsure and confused how to express emotions that others can display regularly.

As far as Geralt specifically goes, in the Sword of Destiny story "A little sacrifice" (Little Mermaid retelling) Dandelion is 100% convinced that his friend not only has emotions, but the same emotional range as everyone else, and, later on in the same story, when Dandelion's friend Essi notes that Geralt feels anxious around the sea, he does not deny it, which makes sense especially given what you said about Witcher's being weaker against sea monsters than land monsters (which turns out to be true when he fights fish people). So even though he likes to be the tough guy, he even seems to have a bit of anxiety, possibly thalassophobia going on, which I found utterly adorable.

thats true, even triss during blood of elves said the witchers have the emotions of normal humans, they simply act like they don't
@aleksandragieralt2522
@aleksandragieralt2522 7 жыл бұрын
As of The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny and the first half of Blood of Elves, Geralt at least appears to be quite emotional. He himself brought up that he is unemotional once - and that was in the scene with Triss, when she was angry with him for not getting involved in politics. He mentions being unemotional to Dandilion once (I forgot which story it was in) and Dandilion calls him out on it and tells him he's one of the most human people he had ever met. In Something More, Geralt is a complete emotional wreck. Every few paragraphs mention him being scared of something. He seems to be angry with his mother for giving him up as well. I do think its interesting that people assume he's unemotional because he gets gaslighted often, and is an easy target for it (gaslighting, according to Wiki, is: "is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or members of a group, hoping to make targets question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilize the target and delegitimize the target's belief"). I think one of the most disturbing things is that others try to project flat-out psychopathy onto him to the point where he actually believes he's a psychopath. I had the impression from the books that witchers in general are treated this way. On the other hand, there is one emotion that Geralt does not have: he's impossible to gross out lololol :P I think emotionally speaking that's the only way in which witchers differ from other humans: they aren't disgusted by blood and guts, but that might be because they're used to it. Geralt at least is not at all desensitized to other people's suffering, despite his experience.

Witchers definitely do have emotions. In “Season of storms” when Dandelion gives Geralt the sword he says Geralt just squeezed his arm but showed not visual emotion. He knew tho that he was happy to receive the sword and that’s how he just portrayed it. Think that’s what the lack of emotions mean. Visually they don’t smile or frown as much but feel the emotions inside.

I found the quote I had previously mentioned regarding Geralt's thalassophobia: "'What do you connect with the sea, Geralt?' she asked suddenly. 'Unease,' he answered, almost without thinking. 'Interesting. And you seem so calm and composed.' 'I didn't say I feel unease. You asked for associations.' 'Associations are the image of the soul. I know what I'm talking about, I'm a poet.' 'And what do you associate with the sea, Essi?' he asked quickly, to put an end to discussions about the unease he was feeling. 'With constant movement,' she answered after a pause. 'With change. And with riddles, with mystery, with something I cannot grasp [. . .] yes, that's it.' 'Ans so [. . .] What you feel is also unease. And you seem so calm and composed.'" (Andrzej Sapkowski, 'A little sacrifice,' page 202 of the 2015 edition of Sword of Destiny) I interpret that as him feeling uneasy about the sea but also about the situation - he's stuck talking to a woman he respects but does who has fallen in unrequited love with him. However, he goes on to loose a battle and almost loose Dandilion/Dandelion to sea monsters, and, as you mention, witchers don't have mutations that make it easier for them to fight sea monsters, so it makes sense for him to fear the sea if only out of a sense of self-preservation. Regardless, it does seem that he's exceedingly brave and apt at swallowing his fear, but this is not a trait unique to witcher's since Essi shares it too, at least to an extent. The paragraph implies and is written in a way to make readers see the delicate artist and the hardened witcher as similar, despite the insurmountable barrier of unrequited feelings between them. I can try to find the other quotes later on. Sorry it took me so long to find this one.

I agree completely. She and Geralt were adorable together, although I know his heart lies elsewhere, but she was such a kind person. She did, however, deserve to be with someone who loved her back. Andrzej Sapkowski seems to have a very cynical world view though, in the way his fairy tales all either have monster princesses, monster princes, or, in the case of his Cinderella, a prince who was not worth the girl's time. I would say he certainly does not believe in happily ever after . . . There are other quotes about Geralt's emotions, mostly negative emotions, anger, anxiety, fear and sorrow, in the chapters pertaining to Ciri - in Sword of Destiny he worries about her when he thinks she will become a dryad and in Something More he is very angry with his mother for giving him up, albeit not as angry as he expects he would have been, and he is also terrified and saddened at the prospect of loosing Yennefer when he reads the names of the 14 sorcerers/sorceresses on the grave. I will look those quotes up for you either this week or next.
@aleksandragieralt2522
@aleksandragieralt2522 7 жыл бұрын
For the record, I do think that he is capable of positive emotions, at least love, friendship and caring, when it comes to Dandilion, Yennefer and Ciri. He loves all three of them. On the other hand, its up for debate whether or not love is an emotion - the most common definitions I've heard of it is "an act of the will," "willing the good of the other as other," and "a promise." However, I believe that one has to have some sort of emotion to be moved to will something, it can be a very diluted, mild emotion such as liking something a little, being a little tired, etc, but something has the be there to move the will to act. I am not sure if logic alone could have prompted him to choose Dandilion as a friend or Yennefer as a lover. Even with logic being a factor (there's no evidence that witcher's can't be logical/intellectual) there would have to be moving force for Geralt to act based on logic, rather than passively standing by and letting life happen. Also, I mentioned that h'e particularly brave, and I am not sure if courage does not in fact qualify as an emotion . . .

Great video, I think that the Mages and Sorceresses i.e. the Concave wanted the Witchers out of the way since they posed a threat to the Mages taking control of the rulers of the Northern Kingdoms. Witchers by nature don't like being controlled by any one, which means that they were a threat to the Concave until itself was destroyed in the Witcher 2. I don't think that witchers are extinct either, in the Witcher 3 Eskel and Lambert were shocked and angered that Yennefer was able to discover how to recreate the trial of the grasses, I am guessing that she and Keira discovered the old laboratory that was under the Keep we saw in the first Witcher game. After the epilogue of the Witcher 3 in the free roam, if you look hard enough, Keira is still there at Kaer Morhen. I think that this means they both know that there will still be a need for Witchers since there will be another conjunction of the spheres.

Witchers certainly have emotions, I mean even if the love of Geralt for Yen was because of the Wish there was still Ciri, and all the games at one point or another show that Geralt (and the other witcher boyz) do feel, do care. I think Birds hypothesis is excellent and I endorse it fully. I believe we still will come to know why mages attacked in future visits tio the Witcher world, be it in books, series or (even better) games. At the moment my money is on the great fanaticism and possible turmoil at the time (like the case with our witcher friend butchering its treacherous contractors), also possible is their search for the formula of the Trial of Grass and witcher secrets (which since they didnt rob it when they destroyed Kaer Mohen makes the idea very weak) and very possibly there were enough witchers to leve the world with much fewer monsters than there are (in the games) so they thought they didnt need they anymore, and just maybe, some of the schools may have induced this attack because of rivalry, bickering or because they thought there was enough witchers (and too few contracts as well?) and it backfired as more revolts occurred and all schools were attacked, just food for though probably.

My opinion is that mage's are afraid of witcher's because even with the weakest form of magic they could kill them with strategy and tactics just like Geralt when he faced Keira, And so they don't what more made for one reason the reason Geralt fell the Elves fell what Radovid employs. Out number the enemy with number's and superior tactic's. So with the slight chace the witcher's could rise against the mage's they fear them especially if they gain the public's support. PS the Witcher's most certainly have emotions given that Geralt loves, Lambert hates, Eskel cares, Vesemir sacrifices himself for the love of he's pretty much adopted Granddaughter Ciri and Letho just wants to save his brother's the only family he ever knew as for Gaetan he only wanted to live but had no impulse control to stop killing untill he saw a girl that reminded him of his sister and those his old life before the killing began. For those reasons i think Witcher's are the most Human of all life in the Witcher universe!

I agree it seems unlikely at first and second thought even but like some mentioned here , surprise goes a long way and they were severely outnumbered and some of the peasants were just young kids as stated in 1 or 2 occasions. The sheer surprise of people rising up against you with such ferocity for no reason played a factor too , they even had mage support and were well organized (as organized as peasants can be anyways) and they also had proper fighters to top it. So large fodder (peasants) , outnumbering fighters and mage support, it becomes clear. The witchers should have at least had watchmen though regardless of the base being secret.

So now we have a Netflix animated film centered around Vesimir that addresses the siege of Kaer Morhen, and if that's really canon then we have a very clear reason why the mages attacked. And it's actually a pretty good reason, too. It may even have been the catalyst for the other schools being destroyed too, or at least the final straw.
@ProperBird
@ProperBird 2 жыл бұрын
It is not canon and I also despise that they tried to say it is.

@@ProperBird So who's trying to call it canon? I've tried looking into it myself but with mixed results. I know the book writer, Sapkowski, said himself anything outside his books are non-canon...but so many people treat the games like canon, and with the live action Netflix series it's just tough to know what to think these days.

What about the book Season of Storms? Geralt deals with mages creating monsters and setting them free for experiments. It takes place between The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, I believe. I'd like to think some clues are in there as to the relationship and opinions of witchers and mages. I haven't read it in a long while but I'd like to see what you think.
@ProperBird
@ProperBird 7 жыл бұрын
I considered that but they don't really give us any mage specific reasons to hate Witchers. Ortolan just really hates Geralt because he killed one of his idols' experiments. But Ortolan is a little bit crazy, just a little bit. Although you might be onto something for Rissberg specifically, since they seem very intent on the creation of "life" and Geralt keeps hunting down their experimented "life", which is why they don't like Geralt specifically when he brings the experiment's tag along to show them what he found. Keep in mind though that Rissberg is a very special case and even the Brotherhood only seems to tolerate them because they're interested in potential worthwhile results. They also cause a lot of controversy and headaches for them however (Dorregaray certainly didn't help) so it doesn't seem like every mage out there cares as much about the killing of monsters as the Rissberg club does. They DO definitely look down on Witchers though. Not sure if that's because of what they are or because of what they do though, would need to dig a little deeper for that.

I like the concept of "Witcher" a lot. I consider them "heroes" of course they are put throught a lot to become the professional monster hunter, in that regard I think like you, that the whole training process leaves a heavy trauma. Think it is a shame the process and knowledge to make witchers got lost; They are the heroes of the land, the badass warriors that are more than human. Probably the move was make to obtain their secrets, or as you mentioned, to oblitarate magical competition for the sorceres

In my opinion monarchs were responsible for creating witchers with the help of sorcerers in their employ. The saying "witchers don't kill kings" can be interpreted as a sign of fear/ repect for Kings, and yes "some" witchers did and paid a price for it. Witchers are "Neutral" because they don't want to anger Monarchs who thinks of them as weapons and hired assasins thus the fate of Cat school witchers same as Letho's Viper School.

Hi bird. You say that Geralt, Eskel and Lambert survive this attack to Kaer Morhen because they are on the path at this time. but i think that may be not entirely true or at least can be arguable. if we don't consider the game lore (witcher 1 and 3) and take only the books as reference, in the 3rd Book Triss tell to Ciri (and the she keep to herself a lot of this information) about the atack and she says the only survivors was not in the Fortress when it was attacked. Geralt it's supposed to have about 100 years, Triss about 40's and this attack was 50 years before Triss was Born (acording to Triss), so we have about 10 years in wich Geralt may be or may be NOT was a Witcher Yet.. then in that time boys in trainning was in another place? it seems that may be. Geralt, Eskel, Lambert, as very young witchers (10 years?, in fact Eskel and Geralt has nearly the same age but Lambert it's described as Younger than these Two...) in this time was on "the path" ?? . I like this type of details, what do you think about it? the Lore in books/games had a lot of issues regarding about events/ages..

Witchers are kinda like the Xmen in a way. Extremely misunderstood. Some are quite helpful. Both mutants.... come to think of it Witchers are a lot like the Xmen. And the Wolverine reference in Blood and Wine just adds to it.... we need Geralt and Logan fanart.... both have to protect their daughter figure, both have a strange relationship with a love interest with a red head. Both have healing factors and extended life spans.

I kind of feel like if he was still "canonically" alive (for lack of a better word) they'd have mentioned him for the battle at Kaer Morhen. Could be wrong of course but there are so many ways for him to die. Even if you don't kill him yourself he's the squishiest, worst Witcher ever in the fight against Javed. He's kind of a terrible witcher. >.>;

about emotions its pretty clear that it is a myth (witchers can't feel emotions) its just a tale from folks. In many lines from the books and games this is treated with irony just to make clear that is the opposite (witchers can feel as any human do)

Witchers dont normaly have emotions, but there might be some withers who just have them weakend like Gerald.This unfortunetly cant be neither aproved nor denied becose Gerald is a son of witch meaning that might be the reason why he has emotions but at the same time it might be becose some sort of ''mistake'' druing trial of the grasses like using ingridients whitch has Been harvested some time sooner/later then they should becouse in trial of grasses any minor mistake might have any resoult

I doubt it would be the Council of Mages orchestrating the attacks on witchers but I can see some mages taking matters into their own hands. As for the religious part of Monstrum, I think it was just an angle to get the peasants on their side since they are numerous and relatively easy to manipulate. Since the Cat School was destroyed by soldiers, I imagine someone used the anti nonhuman sentiment, as many of them were elves. Since humanity has been in a state of war with the elves for centuries, it wouldn't take much to convince someone with authority that the Cat School is plotting the downfall of humanity with the Elder Races.

I think it was the Council - note, that in one of the books is stated that trained Mages like Triss or Yennefer (or other?) DO NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE of Witcher magic, they are concerned with touching the amulets etc. Possibly, Council tried to suppres renegade group that created witchers, along with their knowledge.
