Do not interfere, witcher. Remember what I did to the last fool who interrupted me?
My Witcher lore videos are not meant to replace playing the game series or reading the books. Seriously, the novels are really good and I couldn't possibly convey every detail by just telling you about the events and characters. Go read the books, play the games, then come back to tell me how awesome the Witcher series is.

Now you likely have your own theories as well and I'd very much love to hear them all. But, let's ponder something else together for a moment. When you free the cat and dog demon at the von Everec estate, the dog gives you a hint on how to defeat O'Dimm. He tells you: "seek salvation in glass that can't be broken". But how could the dog possibly know what sort of riddle O'Dimm would present Geralt with? Or that he'd even go the route of the challenge? If O'Dimm used the same riddle each time, surely the last person to survive his contract would've told the world right after banishing him for a time. Or is it something else?
@Kwodlibet
@Kwodlibet 6 жыл бұрын
O'Dimm has a certain degree of mastery over time itself, you ask the question yourself ~ "did he cause the death of the guy leaving the protection of the circle, or did he just witnessed it in the future?" The cat and the dog could be Gaunter's "relatives", perhaps all it took for the dog was a glimpse into Geralt's future. Maybe the more interesting question would be this: Did O'Dimm also saw it and yet played so Geralt could prove himself and achieve something very few others have? Or did he refuse to look into his own future, or at least the future of the game? Now, a nice bit of Slavic folk trivia for you. During the meeting between Geralt and O'Dimm, where the latter reveals his powers over time, Geralt says that "time is a great spice to use in gingerbread" - referring to one of the episodes from the wedding. However, there is another layer of significance where gingerbread, weddings and time are of importance. Some regions had this tradition that upon birth of a daughter one would prepare a barrel of gingerbread dough, seal it up and bury it in the ground. Years later, when the girl was about to get married that barrel would be dug up and the dough would be used to bake actual gingerbread - and no, it was not wasted. The gingerbread dough was heavily spiced, rather dry and containing a lot of honey. Also, if you bury the barrel underneath your house it should be dry and quite cool in there. That was giving the dough about 12-16 years to mature properly alongside the girl (yes, they were usually marrying early). There were probably some other bits of meaning and significance to it, but it is precisely this sort of traditions that make European village folklore so interesting.

Interesting bit about the gingerbread, time is literally an ingredient there. :p I always linked it to O'Dimm teasing that waiting longer and letting Olgierd lose everything first would make victory that much sweeter.

whatever the dog and cat are they could just be able to see the future or they have seen Gaunter play this game before. For the record gaunter has many traits of a sociopath and comes with a lot of narcissism. He scoofs at people and clearly feeds off people and actively enjoys playing games it would seem that he is bound to some rules he cant just feed when he likes. He has to keep people guessing else his deception gets revealed he has to trick you to eat you. He pretends to have a reason behind what he does but he does it mostly because he enjoys it.

I don't think the dog and cat are demons at all, maybe they were in the past but now they are just souls GOD has taken and must now do his bidding. He may have known about the riddle as GOD is like you said very percise on his dealings. So if the dog and cat both failed to GODs riddle they had lifetimes to solve the riddle that he once gave them. And thus help Geralt out of fairness as I belive they feel nothing, not even graditude.

So in my personal opinion, I think I know who Gaunter O' Dimm really is.. He is YOU. He is not just the Master of Mirrors, he is the mirror. He is a reflection of oneself, a gaze into your true nature that can not be broken. This is why people who know his 'name' are dead or worse, they would be driven insane by their rotten reflection. He's not chaotic, or evil. He simply mirrors your true nature. (Bit evil or otherwise) It's why he doesn't like liars, because he wants people to be true to their nature. He wants to make people realize their true nature, using tricky ways to draw out their nature and then confronts them with it. You can tell a mirror that you're 7 feet tall whilst your 5 feet, but the mirror will always show your true length. Gaunter sees liars as a waste of time, as he already knows what is true and what isn't. He is unable to tell lies, because that's not what a reflection does.. It won't show you that you're 6 feet whilst you're only 5 feet. It explains his reasoning in verbal and non-verbal agreements with him, he literally mirrors the words of agreement and wishes that were spoken. It's like writing something, or recording your voice and playing it back. You can say "I want my fortune restored" but It doesn't state anything else, so it doesn't matter in what way it is restored. These are the loopholes he's allowing to exploit because that is what was said, Olgierd might've meant "I want my fortune restored by undoing the events that caused my fortune to vanish" but that wasn't said so it leaves Gaunter to fill in the blanks. The reason why he doesn't like spells is because spells are not tied to emotions, however curses are tied to emotions especially in the Witcher universe where strong emotions can cause even normal peasants to cast a curse. This can be seen in the origins of wraiths and alike. He toys with people to draw out their true nature, this doesn't require a contract at all.. As shown in the Spoon quest. As soon as he does he mirrors it straight back to them, a reflection that cannot be broken.. No matter how hard you try. This is why it requires another person to break Gaunter's curses as the people who are cursed by him are unable to break it as it's a direct reflection, they won't know how to break it as it's their nature.. And only when they do realize it with the help of another person is when the curse is lifted. This is also evident when he interacts with Gerald, Gaunter is fishing for emotions from Gerald. He's obsessed with Gerald because Gerald shows very little emotion, which is a concept that's very hard to grasp for Gaunter. This is most likely due to his Gerald's Witcher mutations, which actually makes it hard for Gaunter to latch onto Gerald. As the reflection of neutral emotions are literally neutral.. So he seeks to let loose Gerald's emotions in some way. This is why he chose Gerald, he seeks to find out what Gerald's true nature is.. He stalks you throughout the game for this purpose. He sends you on those impossible missions, and watches you to see what you would do and what this "Witcher's having surpressed emotions" actually means.

Mutations stripping emotions is folk gossip. Like how they think witchers spread diseases and defeatism and some other such nonsense. There's no indication that witchering process strips human emotions aside from the common idiots your hear talking about among towns, lest witchers start breeding monsters because that would be most profitable due to an absence of human empathy.

Funny story. When I first finished the DLC I chose not to interfere in the fulfilling of the contract out of fear, and when O'Dimm offered me his gifts I refused them. I really like the theory that he isn't evil incarnate, but more chaos incarnate that delights in reflecting mans own evils back on themselves. The detail about the professor is something I never caught. I thought he simply "knew too much", so Gaunter put a cruel curse of sorts on him. The revelation that he had actually tried to take control of O'Dimm casts both characters in a whole new light. Thank you for pointing that out, I fear I would never have caught on myself. So now the question in my mind is, as you posed, "Is O'Dimm actually evil?" Can't wait to see your future videos!

Also, the professor who specializes in black magic (something that even all the other mages frown upon) would almost certainly be burned at the stake by Radovid, so the magic circle may actually be protecting him from death. It’s not just demons that the professor has to fear, and confining the professor to his house is the perfect way to punish him while “helping”.

Rodrigo Gondar Mendes I’d be ok with a small subtle Easter egg for ciri, the witcher world and many other games, but I really don’t want any kind of conclusive evidence regarding a shared world. Let this be its own game. BUT The man of glass is a bit different, if he showed up with a different face but had many of the same powers (toned down), and character traits we could still say, yep that’s him. That’s what I want. He is the devil, he naturally transcends reality, he can be a character in almost any genre or IP.

I am of the opinion that no being of any power like that of the Merchant of Mirrors to a simple farmer. May be the sole decider of anothers fate. Olgierd is a monster of a man, no doubt about it. Nothing can turn back what he has done. But Gaunter O'Dimm has done much worse. The Spotted Wight killed who knows how many to make people eat at her table for instance. Gaunter is a man who does no good, he only does what he wants and what he thinks to be "good" even if that too, is just as vile as the people he curses.

Congratulations and respect for the time spent and the depth and detail of this incredible Gaunter O'Dimm review. I just want to add one thing and my opinion on what Gaunter is. During the wedding you can overhear a conversation between Gaunter and two ladies about making gingerbread and he says "Time gives the proper consistency. Time provides the ideal crunch on the outside, the delicious moistness within." I think this is a metaphor for what he does with human souls. He's a sadistic souleater that toys with his victims before devouring them. Killing that drunk that interrupts him is further proof of his sadistic nature. He wants to appear as a mirror but in truth he is as the professor said - evil incarnate.

Absolutely brilliant! Outstanding work. I was captivated by this game and the two expansions. I was completely immersed when I met O'Dimm for the first time in Hearts of Stone and the two moments that stick out for the most are: (spoliers if you haven't played it) What O'Dimm did to the blind professor. Making him dream of having a daughter. He states how he knew she wasn't real but over time he grew to love her and couldn't wait to see her in his dreams, dreading the time he would wake up and be without her. He goes on how she would grow over time, first as a babe in his arms, seeing her grow into a young lady, then getting married only for it to end and him burying her as an old lady. As a father myself with young daughter that broke heart to hear. I couldn't imagine life without my littlw one now (as much as she does my head in at times). The other was at the end of the wedding where Vladimir decides not to leave Geralt's body and O'Dimm disagrees, without moving a muscle O'Dimm sends Vlad's spirit screaming back to his tomb. In the journal it states that Geralt didn't know what O'Dimm did but it disturbed Geralt for a number of nights hearing that spector scream. Once again you've done a brilliant job with these videos. Keep up the good. work.

Actually the dream is far worse than that even. The young girl never got to grow up. She suddenly grew terribly ill, pocking her whole body with hideous sores. She begged for the professor to help her but he couldn't do anything, so she died in his arms. Truly monstrous. :(

Whoa...I don't know what's worse remembering it incorrectly or hearing that the child cried out for help? Still, thanks for the reply I truely wasn't expecting it. Since I have you what do you think of the next witcher game possibly having a multiplayer aspect? Originally I was thinking something like WoW (get my mmo fix and set in the witcher universers, thumbs up and smiles all round). But then I had visions of fifty witchers in one city it would be like reinacting that scene from Spartacus. You know the one? "I'm Spartacus..." So what if they made it where it was single player but the inns and witcher schools (which would be a starting area) were social hubs where you could meet up with your friends join a party and queat together. It could have reward mechanic where you have to split the reward you get from contracts with those in your group. You could start off in a witcher school of your choice. But you could also play as a human (mercenary), druid, sorceress, dwarf or elf warrior/ranger. Depending on race you have perks like human mercenary maybget better deals at vendors. Even have the possibility of being turnes into a werewolf. For those who are into roleplay (or are just bloody horny) you can form romantic bonds with a party memebers. The game could be set centuries before Geralt's story back when witchers were in there prime and beasties roamed the land. What are your thoughts on all of this? Anyway thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy reply I really appreciate it. Your videos are really enjoyable, keep up the good work.

I hope they never, ever make a Witcher MMO. The lore unfortunately just doesn't lend itself to it at all. Witchers are despised, most of them die in the process of creation and they're absurdly powerful in comparison to regular people. In the current Witcher world they're a relic from olden times, but now that science is catching up with the times people need Witchers less and less. So in the end those that are left would likely have to turn assassin much like most of the cat school did, just to make ends meet. The stories in the Witcher require a delicate approach, one that would never work with the "pick up quest, do thing, turn in quest for exp+loot" system. First of all because Witcher work is supposed to be quite hard to find most times. Second of all because the reason the Witcher is so good are the well thought out questlines. The atmosphere in the world. The Star Wars MMO was notoriously expensive due to voice acting, but if you want a Witcher MMO they're all going to have the voice acting power the single player games have as well. Not to mention that CDPR prides itself on having top of the line graphics and that's just not something you can/should do in an MMO. Not because it's not possible but because very few people would be able to run such a game alongside other people. Lag would only be the first problem really. I have other issues with it as well but I won't drag on too long. In short, no, I don't ever want to see a Witcher MMO. Sorry. :p

You mentioned how O'Dimm was kind of a Chaotic entity but after knowing how he operates by dealing "punishment" equally as the person's deeds (generally/almost evil ones) then I'm inclined to say O'Dimm represents Balance itself; Utterly, cold, neutral, pragmatic balance.

I don’t think Gaunter is a personification of evil as the professor described him. He is more of a creature sent by the god of the Witcher universe to punish cruel people and shape events in a certain way. He is quite a mysterious entity.

'In certain religions knowing a demon's name means having power over them.' This might explain Gaunter's refusal of telling his name: those who know it met death or a worse fate. Having power over someone capable of granting wishes means the power to wish for anything. From this way, if above is true, Gaunter says that the human nature, if restricted by nothing leads the soul to death or to a worse fate.

When the part about the legend about the alchemist and the trick about Rome came up for me it really sounded like "Faust" from Goethe. Faust specifically said "Werd' ich zum Augenblicke sagen: / Verweile doch! du bist so schön! / Dann magst du mich in Fesseln schlagen, / Dann will ich gern zugrunde gehn" so only when Faust says excatley "Verweile doch! du bist so schön" then the devil/mephistopheles is allowed to take his soul. And I can still remember reading a similar line later on in the book(s) and compared it to what was said and saw that it was not the same so the devil could not yet take his soul

What are demons but just another spirit? Not all are hostile even if you should avoid them. There were a few in Solomon's lesser key that liked humans. But non-human spirits always seem to follow certain rules. Their true names, at the very least, have the power to command their attention. They won't break their word and rarely, if ever, lie. But another trait is that they tend to be good at word games. They know all the ins and outs of a language and will use that in crafting any deal they make. They will always try to get the best deal so you must be careful with your words as well as watch what words and phrasing they use. I would consider O'Dimm to be more of a Fae creature of sorts. Magical and unaligned to any side. He is always fair. That he may not deserve more then scorn is besides the point. He does what he does because it is his nature...his purpose. He only seems tricky because he only shows himself to those who deserve his attention. The common man who lives as best he can is of no consequence to O'Dimm. Those who have the power to shape events, however, are and so he stands ready to judge them for their actions. One wonders if the prince was truly blameless if O'Dimm had something to do with his condition. That he was cursed by another may just have been a clever way of punishing him until time for it to end.

I read some of solomon's "demons" were even summoned to aid others truly in some cases. About the Ofieri prince, I hope we get to explore more of the land of Ofir in the future and we might find out what exactly happened there. Perhaps what sinister secrets we have yet to uncover. ;D

@@ProperBird One of the tales of Solomon is when GOD gave Solomon the Pentalpha ring also known as the Carnelian ring. It is made of Carnelian, a lesser gem, with a Pentagon carved in the middle. It is suffused with GOD's power. Solomon had a contract with Hiram, the king Phoenicia to have Hiram's architects to build the Temple on the Mount. The estimated time of the building was ten years. Solomon wanted it to be built faster and so he used the Ring to command demon's around Jerusalem to build at night. The temple was built in half the time and the demons were to tired in the morning to cause misery.

I liked when you started talking about being one side of a coin, I really think you are onto something there. What if he is God but not the whole entity, meaning he is the more evil and punishing part of God and that there is another side which is the opposite to him, hence why the mirrors always shatter since he can't be truly reflected because being a being of such power there can be no true mirror of that. And, for there to be a reflection there needs to be a sort of balance. I don't know if my ramblings made sense but it's just so interesting to think about Gaunter as a character. Easily the most interesting antagonist in any video game/film I have seen

Your theory about him not being evil per se is interesting. And originally, I thought that as well: he punishes those who deserve it but otherwise lets people live their lifes. Until he killed an otherwise innocent man with a spoon because he annoyed him, that is.

One more thing, regarding the dwarves. Let's say Gaunter gave the firefly to them. We can deduce Gaunter's intention based on the story which was influenced by the fact that the dwarves stole the ship which forced Ciri to teleport and caused the siege in Kaer Morhen. You either meet Gaunter before finding Ciri or after but 'canonically' after you had found Ciri. Without the dwarves and the teleportation Geralt might have been able to sail Ciri home without meeting the Hunt (not sure of they had the time, Hunt appeared pretty soon). Without the siege, instead of tying up loose ends in Velen, Novigrad and Skellige, Geralt, Ciri and Yen might have travelled far away from that region. From this point of view Gaunter could have easily sold the firefly to the dwarves, forcing the teleportation and the siege, making them stay around Novigrad/the general area, arranging that Geralt sees Olgierd's Witcher mission when the right time comes. tldr: Gaunter could have used the dwarves to ensure Geralt will be around when Olgierd wants to get rid of the toad.

O'Dimm is what he said, a reflection. If you are a bad person, he will be a bad person, a bad person with devastating power who you should fear. But if you are a good person, he will leave you alone. If you are a good person but choose to challenge him, he will give you a fair trial.

Between the religion, literature and fairy tail allusions, references and inspirations, another one comes to mind. One that makes O'Dimm so much scarier, and he was already the scariest thing I'd seen in much of fiction. The notion that he makes people see their true selves, that he is a mirror they are made to look into, makes me think of a similar entity. One that calls one to it, traps one within it, then forces one to either confront and overcome one's worst nature, no matter how much one suffers in the process, and come out a better person, or die a broken person. Gaunter O'Dimm is a walking, talking Silent Hill. Yet he is also both crueller and kinder than Silent Hill. Silent Hill with simply kill you, O'Dimm with gore and torment you 'tll the stars expire. But he is also fair enough to be upfront and more-or-less tell people what he will put them through, whereas Silent Hill will figuratively and literally shroud one in fog. Then again, a thought occurs to me: O'Dimm couldn't see through the fog of the Isle of Mists, so to speak. So maybe the entity that is Silent Hill is, in fact, one of his supposed rivals ;) p.s. The notion that O'Dimm is greatly interested in the lives of people because they give him stories to tell seems to reflect the direction of the scene where we find him in the pub before he stops time. As Geralt is walking in, the game shows us people having a larf, enjoying each other's company and telling anecdotes. O'Dimm, by contrast, is silent until he calls Geralt. Could simply be an allegory for how he seems ordinary, like those people, but he is anything but, especially if you know him. But it might also reflect how he rather seeks moments like those people are having, but has nothing to share with them, so to speak, in that moment.

After all we've learned about O'Dimm through his Gwent expansion, I think it might be cool to go over this again to revise and review it while taking into consideration the additional information we now have. The bit about how he doesn't necessarily just cast curses and make pacts but also simply influences people to see what happens is especially interesting to me, as it casts doubt on the conclusion that he's "evil incarnate", because what he does doesn't always necessarily lead to bad things.
