Ye olde most requested video topic since I started the Witcher Stories series. Vampires are probably my favourite Witcher "monsters", if you can even call them that. Many of them are highly intelligent, only few manifest in the monstrous form we see in movies. So let's discuss the basics first, before we stride into speculation central. In this video we'll talk about the myths surrounding vampires, both true and false, and we take a look at the Alp/Alpor, Katakan, Mula, Bruxa, Nosferat, Ekimmara/Ekimmu, Fleder and Garkain. The next two videos will be much more speculation heavy and rely on my interpretation of the facts we do have.
My Witcher lore videos are not meant to replace playing the game series or reading the books. Seriously, the novels are really good and I couldn't possibly convey every detail by just telling you about the events and characters. Go read the books, play the games, then come back to tell me how awesome the Witcher series is.

I like the idea of higher Vampires not needing blood to live and it being more akin to taking drugs and alcohol. It makes them so more closer to humans and yet so inhuman at the same time (since from what we know they don't need anything to stay alive).

i am iffy about how they seem so immortal. I think the heart myth should have applid but be from their heart being basically their actual 'brain' as it were. a Mystical organ that is where their entire self is, that allows them to run off even if decapitated. Even when, even if biologically immortal, that should leave their entire body limp and immobile until the parts are reconnected or the head and the brain matter are sufficiently regenerated.

Tad Dad that does sort of miss part of their lore that their soul is “disconnected” from their body in a way so if their soul is what controls them it wouldn’t matter how their body is affected.

I would probably put the vampires into a low, mid, and high tier. Low being Ekimarae and the more beastial types that eat humans for food. Mid being Bruxae, Nosferats, and Katakans. Highs being dudes like Regis and Detlaff. Then there's the Unseen which just breaks the tiers XD.

+Centrions They're already divided. However true higher ones like Regis and Detlaff are extremely rare, whereas there are many old Katakans and Bruxae intelligent and powerful enough to mask themselves as humans. Which makes it very difficult to say where the line goes between someone like Regis and someone like Hubert Rejk, who is a katakan. Thus, Katakans, nosferats and Bruxae are all considered "higher ones" along with the true high ones. So most of the time when Geralt says "higher vampire", he's actually up against a Katakan or Bruxa. However, even Katakans and Bruxae are much more dangerous than ekimmaras or fleders are, and thus witchers traditionally tend to avoid dealing with any kind of higher vampire, be it an Alp, a katakan or someone like Detlaff.

Spash 1098 yeah aren't Katakanas and some of the other vamps supposed to be a whole lot more powerful than they are in game. Now Detlaff is somewhat of a tough fight and you a witcher can't kill him truly, though it almost seemed like he was going easy on you compared to how it went with the Nazairi mercenaries at Dun Tyne where Detlaff and Regis can easily cleave people in half while still in mist form.

I think the true Higher Vampires are too high tier for TW-GU(Which fits considering the nature of the World, they're truly alien). I'd say the same about O'Dimm but he seems to be bound by a few rules whereas Higher Vamps like Regis and Detlaff have self imposed rules shared by some of their lower cousins.

I didn't know that the "bruxa" came from a Portuguese legend. That's interesting. But also very annoying for me. Portuguese is my first language and "bruxa" is the word for "witch". It gets even worst if you consider that they have translated "witcher" into "bruxo". (Which, in itself, is confusing enough, since a "bruxo" is NOT a male "bruxa".) So in Portuguese, you have bruxas that are witches and you have bruxas that are vampires, and neither of them is related to the bruxos like Geralt. *annoyed sigh*

In dentistry, we have a term "bruxism". It's a condition where a person has a tendency to gnash their teeth, usually causing the teeth to be abraded due to friction between upper and lower jaw teeth. Quoting from Wikipedia, Bruxism, from Greek brukhein ‘gnash the teeth’. So, women figure with fang that have tendency to gnash their teeth into their victim's artery really fits.

In Vampire : Masquerade lore vampires are usually stronger the more they manage to 'survive' although also there are very strong almost godlike vampires called antedeluvians (before the flood). The strongest vampire is Cain who was the very first although he is more of a myth. (Who may work as a taxi driver though)

I wonder if all the vampires are part of a life cycle. As they age, they become stronger and change as they eventually become higher vampires given enough time. If Katakans can start appearing as humans, it stands too reason that they eventually could stay in that form if they gain enough power through age. When you fight detlaff and weaken him, he changes into a completely bestial state which supports that the "human" forms of higher vampires is hiding their true self which is the final stage of a vampire's life cycle. Or maybe there is a stage further?
@iona2225

And how Detlaff’s preference for lesser vampires could be seen as related to this stage, being able to ‘revert’, focus his ‘unused’ age-power to something else?
@Fabian6980

Mr Titanus no there's no cycle just different breeds and different vampire species the higher vampires are lucky the human looking ones are basicly a much more powerful version of humans also alot smarter perfect humans pretty much including bruxas they look like humans but don't act like humans they act more like their lower level vampires and can only say a few words but they are still extremely intelligent and extremely powerful. even most witchers don't stand a chance against them Infact geralt is the only known witcher to have defeated humanoid higher vampire. He's a legend

remember that quest from the main game in the Witcher 3, the one that starts after Priscilla gets attacked ? I may have an idea why the vampire involved turns into a Katacan even if when you first play said quest youll unlock 2 bestiary entries, one for the katacan and the other one for higher vampires, but sadly this is a somewhat mundane explanation, and pretty much CRPR didnt develop the vampire monster type that much, or at least not to the point of what we see at the Blood and Wine expansion
@ProperBird
@ProperBird 5 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely, I don't doubt that they didn't have a 100% complete version of their Higher Vampire at that point just yet. But it's nice to try to explain as much as possible through lore reasons and theorizing still. ^^

Are you sure Orianna is a (true) higher vampire and not a bruxa? Because in the "A Night To Remember" cinematic Geralt kills a vampire that looks a lot like her. On top of that, she also sings the song she sang to the child in the orphanage. Geralt reacts to this by saying " Nice tune. Been a while since I heard it last." to which she responds with: "Folk have forgotten it." I think by that she means the whole story with (if she is Orianna) her drinking the orphans' blood. All of this makes me think of Orianna as a Bruxa rather than a true higher vampire. I'm still not entirely sure though. Anyway, I'm excited for your next video. Greetings from Germany :)

Just a fun fact: in german Alptraum is the word for nightmare in english, while it literally says dream of an Alp. An Alp is normally some kind of male dark elf/dwarf- ish thing not really something vamire-like, except the malice. I wonder if higher class vampires like bruxa alps and katakans are capable of becoming true higher vampires if they are old enough i say old enough because we already know a vampires strength and rank are determined by age so if higher class vampires can eventuly become true higher vampires then it would go to exsplane how say the coriner (hubert reik) a katakan was able to take human form other example of higher class vampires seemingly taking on true higher vampires abilitys are say verena who could not only speak fluidly but turn into a giant bat another is oriana who we know is bruxa but is refered to by regis as a true higher vampire so maybe oriana is a very very old bruxa and has almost completly become a true higher vampire and if so its not unreasonable to say other higher class vampire can do the same

Isn't Oriana a Bruxa, not a true higher vampire like Regis or Detlaff? In the launch trailer "A Night to Remember" she was a Bruxa, wasn't she?

Ah, ok. I'm about to start part 3 so you may have answered this already, but do the vampires know about Ciri? If so, why haven't they tried to capture her since she can travel between worlds? If the Unseen Elder wants to go home so badly you'd think he would do everything in his power to get there, like using 'The Lady of Time and Space'

I seem to recall something about ciri accidentally teleporting to some strange world and waiting for a month or so for Avalach to find her. I don't remember what the world looked like but she seemed confused as to where she was. I could just be imagining all this but wouldn't that mean she could go somewhere she's never seen by accident. -Plus if the unseen elder gets all excited when he smells something from his world, you'd think that he could describe it in enough detail to allow cirri to travel there

Is it me that vampires are much easier to kill than werewolves in the witcher?

Depends on the vampire AND the werewolf. (and higher vampires really aren't of coures) :p

is orianna higher vampire or just a powerful alps? cuz in a night to remeber, she displays none of the higher vampire quality
@ProperBird
@ProperBird 6 жыл бұрын
I don't actually include "a night to remember" in my personal canon at all. Mainly because it was created long before Blood & Wine was set in stone entirely (no pun intended), so I don't accept the person in the trailer as Orianna but just a powerful Bruxa. CDPR actually did confirm that the vampire in the trailer was a bruxa as well but people speculate that this simply means Orianna is a bruxa as well. Too many inconsistencies in linking the two however, in a piece of Lore already rather riddled with holes.

Yep, I had half a mind to ascribe it to different higher vampires "powers" but since generally Geralt still kills vampires with silver, it seemed to make some sense. Regis is a very special vampire after all. ;p

I think it's more akin to how Superman is to magic. While magic isn't actually a weakness to Superman, it can hurt him. In this case High Vamps like Regis and Detlaff while they aren't weakened by Silver the material can still hurt them or feel uncomfortable at times.

Is it stated somewhere in the books about Katakans disguising themselves as humans? I thought CDPR simply made mistakes with the vampires in the main game? That the sleeping one and the one that attacked Priscilla were supposed to be Higher Vampires, but were made incorrectly? After this vampire series, is it possible you could make one about elves?
@ProperBird
@ProperBird 7 жыл бұрын
It isn't mentioned anywhere, I'm about 90% sure CDPR did mean for the Katakans in the base game to be true higher vampires. They just had to backpeddle like mad after creating Blood & Wine. I really feel like they should have set some serious groundrules when it comes to vampires before getting into trying to explain them at all but hey, they did what they could I suppose. In the case of Katakans I'm working entirely with game lore and Blood & Wine spins on its heel quite a bit when it comes to vampire mechanics.
