I did often think about why so many people in video games sat down to write their journals while about to be killed by something they know is coming. You reminded me of this though: Priest: “He who is valiant and pure of spirit, may find the Holy Grail in the castle of Aaaaaargghh." Arthur: “What?” Priest: "The castle of Aaaaaargghh" Sir Bedevere: What is that? Priest: He must have died while carving it. Sir Lancelot: Oh, come on! Priest: Well, that's what it says. Arthur: :Look, if he was dying he wouldn't bother to carve "Aaaaaargghh." He'd just say it. Priest: Well that's what's carved in the rock. Sir Galahad: Perhaps he was dictating. Funny how even something as grim as Dark Souls can bring Monty Python to mind.

*embrace boobie, reject thought* I find this video somewhat encouraging. I never considered playing the Souls games, being the kind of a non-gamer that isn't there for challenging bosses, albeit the aesthetic draws me in. But now I think I can do it, bite through the bosses, but more than anything, enjoy a unique and uniquely told story. So thank you! Also these sketches are hilarious and I love them.

i love this vid. the humour of your skits perfectly captures the dystopian absurdity of the series :3 if there's one thing i'd wanna add it's that the stories usually have fairly low stakes, which keeps the tragedy inherent to their characters less existential. the world has already ended, we're just here to preserve the last dregs. or not. it's the same kind of sadness you feel looking at abandoned ruins in the countryside and i really love that about dark souls :3

I feel like Elden Ring gonna change for the better a bit more, especially since GRRM actually worked on the game. This is also already evidence with Sekiro, being the most recent Fromsoft game that so much more "cinematic" (or what's the right word here for literature) & easily digestible for most players to follow its overall story. I do think maybe because Sekiro featured a more personal story & pre-made player character with a more focus character background & etc.

The thing is I don't like the subtlety of Dark Souls story telling. I like my stories a little more explicitly where I don't have to watch hours of lore videos to understand the story.

All those lore vids do is tell you what's already in the game itself though. But yeah, I get why the story telling style doesn't work for everyone. Admittedly it's not something I would want most games to do, but I can't picture dark souls having remotely the same kind of immerse atmosphere if it had a more explicit story.

This is a pretty good and nuanced review of the game. Well done Jinzee! I tried out DS1 after some friendly peer pressure and got past Ornstein and Smough just to prove to myself that at least I could beat them and then dropped it. I have come back to it every couple of years or so just to see if there's something I'm missing with the game. Each time it's the same conclusion, combat is not bad, hit detection is a bit weird and I end up cheesing most of the time to get past tough enemies. Level design is amazing, that's one thing I appreciate each time I come back to it. The environmental storytelling option is novel and cool too, howeve,r ultimately I realise the reason I never want to stay and finish the game is because the world of DS is not one that captures my imagination. It's monochrome, everything and everyone is miserable and fucked and I don't want to stay in the world of DS. So I have no motivation to stay in the world and explore or discover more because I know whatever I find will be painted in misery and suckiness. I enjoy fantasy worlds with more colour and emotional tones. At least it's fun to have watched my DS obsessed friends struggle and rage while I drink a beer. That's my way of enjoying DS :p.

Correction: The Chaos Servant path ISN'T the only way we can save Solaire. There's also the Pyromancy path, which allows us to save Solaire WITHOUT joining the Covenant. If you don't start the game as a Pyromancer, you must first buy a Flame from Laurentius after rescuing him. Next, there are two ways of acquiring the spell Poison Mist: 1) Find it in the Poison Swamp and 2) Let yourself be infected by one of the Egg Carriers in the Demon Ruins. Having an Egg Head will allow you to buy the spell from Eingyi by The Fair Lady. Use Poison Mist on the Great Door to Izalith and you will kill the Sunlight Maggot.

What an excellent video! There's a lot more that could be said about Dark Souls (2011), but maybe this is something for us, the community, together give to other players before they can join in and have their experience. Each of one of us can share our individual stories and reasons to why this world is so special to us. My final paper was about Dark Souls (2011) and I'm not ashamed of it, not in the slightest, it is the most important piece of art in my life and one that inspires me by each corner of its creation and importance in the industry. It takes itself seriously (as an art expression, i do not meant literally in the game itself) and it knows what it wants to give, it is extremely certain of its goals, what it wants to achieve and what it wants you to feel. Every single aspect of the game talks to one another, even the flaws (Cof cof, the whole Act 2 of the game, cof cof) has their own texture and personality that if it wasn't there it could probably not have receive the same affection from the players. Thank you for this video. Thank for your words and thank you for being part of the community. It really means a lot and I'm proud of each one of us here. This series IS a whole lot special. The next comments will be specific things, so i'll end this one here. Thanks Again.
@aquelesousa
@aquelesousa 2 жыл бұрын
One thing i wanted to comment is some elements of the video that i think i can share a piece of my mind to make it more clear (i could be wrong, though, but as a recent researcher of the Japanese text of the game, which is 80% different from the English one... yeah, it's that different... I think i can share some interesting thoughts). About Artorias: It is actually not hard to piece together this "convolutedness", specially because it is something pretty straight forward if you already played the vanilla version and went to play the DLC. Even before the DLC, this particular element of Dark Souls (2011) was not hidden and it is the crucial part to understand a story that is actually 250% straight forward, I'm not joking. Dark Souls (2011) like some of the millions examples that we have seen in many medias, specially in Video Game (which is a media that has a lot of pretty good examples of it) is a very self-aware game. It is a game ABOUT video games telling the story of VIDEO GAME STORIES through its own game. But what differentiates Dark Souls (2011) from other games and other medias is that, okay, they are going to tell a story which has this meta commentary about videogame's story. But they never forget that they're still a world on its own. A pretty good example would be Twin Peaks, it's a strongly metalinguistic show that never forgets the fact that they have their own world, but Lynch embraces these elements and and make the story of that world be part of the metalanguage because both are the same and telling the same thing. Dark Souls (2011) is the same thing. (And that's why i'm talking about DaS1 specifically, because DaS2 and 3 completely ignores this, specially DaS3 where they straight up retconned it.) And in what way this ties to Artorias? Well, you go back in the past to the moment where Artorias war, in theory, living his legend and doing what he is said to be done. And then you find out that it was not really how it works and it has a lot of its particular plot points and all that i can't spoiled here, but the point is: Yes. It's not Artorias anymore, It's you, because this legend of traversing the Abyss came from you and that's why you are able to do so in the vanilla. Because that's how videogames work with Past Stories, you are inserted in the past and living and deciding with the mind that you now have of what the future is going to be. The outcome is only one. But in order for this to be possible, because this world was not mended by you, it needs to be part of the nature. Because as we all know, everything which is out of the rules of nature is treated by the gods as a Sin. Invasions, for example. So yeah. There was never a "going back in time to save someone", but rather "going FORWARD in the past to keep the present". This interpretation of time travelling of Dark Souls (2011) is pretty neat and I really like how Dark Souls 2 does it too. It's pretty cool. And going back with the idea of Dark Souls (2011) being a metalinguistic game, they even go further to make it clear the entire time as you go along, because every single aspect of the game correlates with it. You are Cursed. Your curse does not let you die, because you are trapped within this world. Your purpose is now to deal with the First Flame, rather lit it up or letting fade. There's an explanation in-world to why you go back to bonfires after you die? Yes, there are. But as we all know (specially in the Japanese text), Bonfires only exist where there is a Fire Keeper (At least in Dark Souls (2011) and Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 completely fucks this up), because the existence of one is dependent on the other. Bonfires can only still be lit because there are Fire Keepers sacrificing humanities in it, constantly. So why so many Bonfires? Because they are points of resting. Checkpoints. It's where you check... your points. (It sounded awful, but it's literal) Why you go back to them? Because they were the last place you have been. Why do you keep coming back and just doesn't die? Because you still have purpose. What is that purpose? Go out of Undead Asylum, Talk to new NPCs, Have adventures, Know more about this world, Lit the Flame, etc; Your Purpose is given by you, because you are the player. You will only go hollow the moment you shut down your controller and console and never come back. And if you (it goes to everyone reading this) still don't believe me, I won't even go further to spoiled Siegmeyer's Quest, but rather talk and segment this directly to another thing i wanted to talk about and there is correlation to what i've been talking till now: the reason why Rhea goes to Duke's Archives. The reason? It's because of you (player). As we learn through Solaire (and within the japanese translation that is 100% straight forward with this), Time is not convoluted (That is Dark Souls 3 bullshit, doesn't even make sense), only the flow of it. Everything that is a thing has a Soul and so does suffer the effects of time and aging (or the lack of again), that includes elements of the environment, nature, items and enemies. In Undead Parish we fight one of those Channelers and as we know they work for Seath. Killing them does not necessarily kills them forever in this world, because remember, they may be gone but they still have purpose - and the lack of it is the only thing that kills someone in this world while accursed. (DS1 rules).
@aquelesousa
@aquelesousa 2 жыл бұрын
Rhea is only taken to Duke's Arhives because you, the player, have been receiving lectures about Miracles, does proving that she's a cleric. If Petrus is dead and you do not buy all of her Miracles (Thus learning), she will not be taken to Duke's Archives. And with this, you can now piece together why that event with Siegmeyer is so utterly depressing. It is the heaviest slap that I've seen a videogame give in a player for doing something that video games always told you to do without understanding why are you doing it. But I rather not spoil this, because it is my favorite quest line and favorite moment of the entire game. Dark Souls (2011) is always reminding you of how you, being a videogame player, is in a world telling a video game story that it is suffering from being a video game story, because of how video games story works. (Or a more well phrase thing in this line, I'm a complicated person). And this is the element that made me be so happy and sad (in a good way) with this game. It is aware of it's place in its media and it will never take that away from itself, because its experience is about that. Is about being a videogame and how they can subverts your expectations to create something truly unique. Narratively and Ludically.

I'll grant that it's not a super long time, but I've been watching your stuff since either the Koudelka video, or Ragnar's Koudelka video where he referenced your channel, probably the second one, and I had no idea you were into the souls games. That said, it is entirely possible that I just wasn't paying attention. One thing I find interesting about the first game that really isn't present in the other two is that it is suggested that there is a world outside of Lordran that is more or less functioning, though for how much longer, or if it is at all is anyone's guess. I can't help but wonder what kind of dystopia those places are, that they are willing and able to round up their undead and send them to Lordran.

Now I have never played dark souls or the itterations of them, but I have some time wondered what if you could a different path, and with that I mean in stead of killing enemies, you could choose put away your weapon, and lay your hand upon the enemies(most of them, as some of them may be hard to do so) or on npc´s and cure them of the dark sign, now this should of cause make the game very hard, so say that the health bar is shortned almost to dead, atleast in the beginning, when doing this, but also slowly refill and even grow and extend. now doinng this path or trying to do so, could then perhaps lead towards a wholly different ending, perhaps one more hopefull, just curious :-)

I am really, really bad at the souls games. I played a chunk of the first Dark Souls game and it felt so heavy. When I asked friends how they did it or how they enjoyed it so much, I got the boilerplate "git gud". I kept playing and used Humanity and got invaded by someone. That happened a few more times, in the same area, and I gave up playing. A year ago I bought Bloodborne and, while I felt myself getting better at it, it was so tedious that I just gave up on that too. I repeat, I am really, really bad at these. I could never get past the two wolves or whatever the fuck they were, near the start. I would die then have to fight my way back, often dying in the process. I have now just given up. I can't work out how to get better. I don't survive long enough to understand what the fuck I'm doing wrong. It's ridiculous. But it isn't the games fault. The fault lies entirely with me and my lack of skill.

Jinzee making a video about Dark Souls? Damnit, count me in! /edit: 20:30 sums it up nicely. Reminds me of that Season 3 Ramsay Bolton quote ... "if you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention"
@LadyAhro
@LadyAhro 2 жыл бұрын
It’s very accurate to Souls, but oh boy do I hate that quote now after seeing it parroted endlessly after the unsatisfying ending of Game of Thrones. (Because we didn’t want a happy ending - Hell, all of the Starks basically got one in the end. We wanted a logical ending with actions that had understandable consequences. Like Ned's death or the Red Wedding. Decidedly terrible unhappy things that were very well set up. The ending of GOT wasn’t that.)

Speaking of awful but great stories, did you ever play the original "Nier"? It takes 3 full playthroughs to get the full story and for me the 3rd playthrough was all about getting the Platinum trophy so I could stick it back on the shelf and have no excuse to touch it again. I finished dark souls about 6 months ago. I'm a very thorough player so I explored everything (painted world, knew about big boob illusion, killed Gwyndolin) and I gotta say, having not gotten the proper explanation of what the fuck is going on in the game at the end, and having to google it, watch vaatividya videos afterwards, made this game shit for me and left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I like the fighting system, the level and world design is genious, atmosphere amazing, but the story, damn, what a piece of shit. If they put just a tiny bit of effort into it, the game would be 4567450 times better. And sorry, didn't have time to watch your video in full length, but I'll mention dystopia. Also, you're cute :D
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 2 жыл бұрын
It's fine if it doesn't work for you, but saying they put no effort into the story is incredibly disrespectful. All those lore vids are doing is telling you what's already in the game in a shorter way the fact that you have to peice the story together yourself is part of its appeal and works brilliantly with the atmosphere the game is going for. If that doesn't work for you, I can understand that, I love it but I definitely can understand why it fails to engage some people. But it's an incredibly bad attitude to game design to call something a peice of shit simply because it doesn't work for you personally. The story telling style of dark souls is part of what makes the game what it is.
@Hybe123
@Hybe123 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 I'm calling it shit because there is no story. There are pieces of it that people on the internet gathered and compiled into a video that made sense. Also, you have to agree that what they came up with isn't a clear picture. After buying a game, and putting 60+ hours into it, I think I have a right to say anything I want about the game. If I had to be polite, I could say the game design team was lazy for not making a better story. I don't think it was mystical on purpose, I think it was an accident due to poor game design, therefore if they hired someone for the story (hint, they did it for Elden Ring) it would have been much better. What makes me dissatisfied is that people think the story is deliberately not explained, whereas it was in reality a game imperfection that they picked up on in later games too and went with it because it accidentally worked. Your only valid argument is that I am not nice and disrespectful, which I can agree with. But trying to police the internet with your ethical and moral standards, good luck with that 😄

Don't give up hope! In Dark Souls, the only time you truly lose and go Hollow is when you, the player, gives up. This is shown by all of the dead bodies and their lootable weapons and souls along your journey. It's representative of past players giving up at certain spots and areas, quitting the game at a particularly difficult juncture. When you give up, you're letting the grim dark world- and the agony of dying again and again to horrific monsters and massive weapons-overwhelm your soul, making you and your character Hollow. Willpower is the only way to ward it off. The second you let it all get to you and put down that controller for the last time, it's too late. When I discovered this and thought in that perspective, I played with a vengeance until I got to a point where I can 'no death run' DS3, though that has more to do with too much free time than any skill on my part. Keep fighting friend, and remember, don't you dare go Hollow.
