Brief description of ceramic oxides, their properties and sources. Melting point, coefficient of expansion, surface tension, viscosity, volatilization, toxicity, color response, soluble and insoluble sources. Discussion of : Flux, Refractory and Glass-Former. Next video will be opacifiers, and colorants.
(Made a mistake in here where I said in Potassium, the copper blue in reduction...I meant iron blue in reduction...trying to find the annotation insert for windows but having trouble.)

I received a D grade in High School Chemistry 😱 As a MERRY CHRISTMAS to ME. I bought your book 👍. These Courses couldn't have come at a better time. I am not only chemistry deficient, I can't do a hair braid, Despite the fact I've been a stylist for 50 years 🤣..Thank you so much.. I'm so thrilled you're back in the saddle and healing 🥰

Many thanks for explaning the R20:RO ratio. I was wondering about it. I searched some books and open sources but couldn't find it till now. Now I start to understand what is happening little by little.

Thanks John!! Giving us these videos help so much. I can read the same line (in your book) over and over and still not be able to fully understand what is being said, adding these videos help fill the gap or block that seems to form in my head while reading. It's amazing how you can describe the same this in the videos and I can actually understand what you are saying. Thanks again and keep u the good work. My builder finally broke ground on my new home in SC. Once I get settled I am sure I will be able to sign up for your classes. I could spend days going over test tiles alone. Thanks

Awesome explainer, thanks for putting all this content out for free! I am currently assembling plenty of your recipes from the high fire book, yet i fire in oxidation. I thought to fire to 1274 in my electric kiln and hold for 20 mins with a 84°C/h climb before. Would that be too low for many basic cone 10 recipes ?

That should work fine. Just put in cones so you know. I often work at that temperature...kaki, oil spots, yellow, oribe, etc.

@@johnbrittpottery cool! thank you :) I decided to try out about 10 glaze tests first and see how the firing went. I can check the usb record afterwards and then put int the remaining 19 testers! Can't wait to see the results.

Sir john, hello from India. I have just started to learn about glazes. I am using cone 6 firing and looking for a better understanding of the mid fire range. Which book are you referring to in the videos? Is it the mid range glazes guide book written by you!

Guess I am saying individual oxides can be listed as toxic but the glaze can be fine.

Hey John-- been going through these tutorials past couple days and they are fascinating. I'm exploring crackle glazes and you've brought up previously that crackle isn't good for functional ware. I'm seeing some potters (www.floriangadsby.com/gallery/) using crackle glazes in their functional ware-- bowls, plates, mugs, etc. Is there any instance in which crazing could be considered food safe/functional, or is this an error on their part for selling these pieces as functional?

Shame you didn't get an response to your questions. I hope by now your experience had guided you towards why there appears to be a conflict in what you were told as a beginner and what you see established potters practice.
