Guys, I went through the hunt for the "perfect" (for me and my family) property at about your age. My prediction is that as you dismiss potentials for this and that concern, your criteria will begin to relax (consciously or subconsciously) to end up with a compromise which wouldn't have been adequate at the beginning. If it drags out too long you risk later realizing that one of the earlier properties was the best bet but it's no longer available. The quicker you review the possibilities, the less likely you'll miss out on the best compromise. At some point you'll realize that cleaning out debris and mess, fixing roofs and replacing sheetrock, widening and smoothing rough roads, contouring landscapes, etc, is not such a big deal after all and easily overcomable. Even enjoyable! Forward vision. It's the potential and overall cost. Keep in mind that building, repair, modification, and renovation costs are spread over time. Doing it yourself saves a ton along with staging the tasks to keep material, tools, and equipment costs spread over time. It may seem overwhelming now at the onset with your limited experience but in retrospect it's just a matter of evaluation, organization, and prioritization with continual skill building along the way. It actually builds joy from accomplishment along the way. Plus teamwork - divide and conquer. Setbacks along the way will be overcome and make the victory that much sweeter. Take it from a team who's done everything and now helping their kids with projects. I got a chuckle out of the notion that four acres is a big farm. Our daughter is on three and a half - it ain't big. Our son is on over a hundred. We don't consider that as "big" but adequate and manageable. And what seems remote at first ends up being less so than originally perceived. It's a matter of perspective. Onward and upward, Cheers!

My parents left Portugal in the 50-60s and immigrated to Canada. I was born here but after watching your videos, I wonder why they ever left (even through they were born in the Azores). It is not only sound pollution that you get from a busy road, there is also the question of exhaust fumes that build up toxins in your body over time. The only way to clean up that is with a dense thick treeline. Good luck to you.
@lauralarson34902 жыл бұрын
Noise pollution from heavy traffic road : NO, you will never get use to it. My inlaws lived in a mountainous area, in northern Central Sweden. First. Moving there we lived with my inlaws. They lived in an uncorporated village of dozen people. It was a major logging route. These semi trucks, hauling 2 long trailers of freshly cut timber. Entering the village was on an incline. You could hear the trucks shifting before actually seeing them. The house & outer buildings shock each time these trucks passed through. Opposite direction, had hill coming down into the village, where you would hear a series of loud hydraulic brakes slowing down while down shifting. I am a light sleeper, and no an early morning person. I never got use to it. To me, it's as bad as living near an amtrak rail road tracks. I actually live in a national dense forest area, with no nearby train track (closest 20 miles away) and tonnage limited to no semitrucks nearby . It's very quiet, in this gated village I live in Central Midwest South States.

I live in a 55 and over community of apartment buildings. Our building is right next to a major road. The community paid for the installation of some walls along the street that are 8 foot tall. This is the best way to reduce street noise, just so you know it has worked in Chicago, Illinois downtown near major road artery. Red cedar fences make excellent sound barriers, particularly if they are built as solid privacy fences. Thick, tongue-and-groove boards are ideal. For even better sound-dampening, consider installing mass-loaded vinyl directly in the wooden fence. This material is sold in rolls. Adding thick hedges on your side of the fence and tree's helps as well, making the space more tranquil in the end.

I would also say the two main points that I heard my Portugal friends say to look out for is that it can get very cold in the winter inside the houses (esp if you’re sitting on a computer all day) so good insulation is a must. And when you have kids the more rural places can be challenging as few family oriented events/experiences/community (mostly older farmers etc) so can feel quite lonely/isolating. Something I suppose you don’t turn any attention to until you have kids, but just telling you what they told me!

Right now looking at similar country places in Barcelona & Costa Brava area we know well and this winter will rent a home in the east of Malaga area on the coast where we wintered for years lean into the experience by renting and look at more. But we are not in a hurry and want to take our time & enjoy travel too. We've also spent a lot of time in Portugal so it is fun to look at houses/land with you there. My husband grew a boutique organic vineyard from scratch in Santa Cruz mountains, so organic vineyards, organic gardens and fruit trees is something we have done a lot and enjoy, so they are on our list!! Hey guys! Enjoy your content! I'm an acoustician and build recording studios in Nashville and know a lot about acoustics. The best way to reduce road noise would be to build a tall concrete block walls at least 6ft tall (taller if possible). Another decent idea would be to plant massive trees (evergreen if possible) that will help absorb some of the road noise. The best solution would be to do both and use a metal gate at least 6ft tall. This may reduce the road noise by about 30% and probably wouldn't reduce it pass 50%. Since sound is movement of air, it's hard to stop it in the open air. Hope this helps!

@@Mrandmrsadventure Be careful with how you build walls around your property near a public road. There are rules that determine maximum height and distance from the road. You might not be allowed to build a concrete wall higher than 4 ft, though I think you can ask for an exception if you present justifiable circumstances. On top of the wall you are allowed to install another type of fencing, though.
@Mrandmrsadventure2 жыл бұрын
@@ppietrap3876 great point! So perhaps an additional fencing with hedge of sorts 🙌
@ppietrap38762 жыл бұрын
@@Mrandmrsadventure You could do that, there are certainly houses that do put a thick and tall bush hedge next to the wall. Or you can put a metal fence on top of the wall, though I have no idea if it would solve the noise problem. Anyway, building a taller wall is not automatically excluded, it’s just that there is no guarantee it would be approved.

hi, like a lot your channel, been following you form some time, I am Portuguese so maybe I can give some tips on what I see, not a specialist, I am just a 50 year man IT guy, my grand father had like 15 properties some big some small in central Portugal , when he died my father sold the major one like 10 years ago and maybe one or 2 more not quite sure how many, we still have some but for more than 10/20 years we dont visit them and some we even dont know for sure the borders and are very remote, some near the border of spain, one day I will take over and see if I can see where are they and the borders, the only one I know is we have a house in the center of a village with a garden witch is more than 300 m2 I guess , but the house is 3 floors was reconstructed like 40 years back , it was where my grand dad died and my father went there like some 6 month ago and said that because of lack of mantainace some wood doors he could not open they like inflated a little so he is old and had no force to open them some artificial ceiling on that top floor is falling not the roof that was put new but the second layer made of plates of like card board with 40 years they too get twisted or so and they fell from the frames...well its a pity but its a remote big village ( malpica ) Castelo Branco area, near spain border... well just to say a lot of properties are abandoned, people are not farmers any more like 50/70 years Portugal has changed a lot in that aspect. But if I were you I would buy something not small nor big , because lets face it you are not farmers, farmers its a hard life and it takes almost the entire day after day, you are not city guys and want more off grid but you are lets say modern explorers of more acient way of life...you can grasp and do middle enterprises but dont pick up complexity to many small houses with complicated spaces , go for simplicity , try to go for near water spaces not very far from water resources, not in the middle of pine and eucaliptus big forests and with roads that have good escape routes , Portugal has a lot of fires its very normal in all of Portugal and its a thing to be very aware, peolple die every year and lose all their houses and belonguigs so be aware, go for simple things with trees yes but managable, Portugal is a paradise almost everybody knows that because of weather, and affordability , food and a good people. the 2 first properties space was good but yes a bit complexity on the houses spaces, and the noisy road is not good for sure.

not sure if the property is still available only there's a very artistic community in Salir do Matos that has the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere yet 20 minutes to most things (ocean, city centre, etc) and 50min to Lisbon. anyhow it was two acres cleared and usable land with great covered parking for vans, a small home with utilities already present for 175. plus there was another ruin property 10 minutes to the centre of Caldas for 75...it also had services already at property. just depends what you want to do with the property - keep in mind that rv parks are plentiful and as you discovered free or close to nothing. ex. the rv park right behind our home which is an easy walk to the castle cost 7 euro which includes services, only there are plenty of spots available that are free as well. granted they are basically paved parking lots - only for here its the castle and ancient village that people come to see. good luck with your search

Envious of your plan to live in Portugal. Beautiful country and wonderful people. Love the area of Coimbra. Like the University environment with the energy of a larger historic city. You can certainly find local Fado music there. Your morning of espresso and pasteis de nana brought back fond memories of our visit there. Look forward to watching you find your dream location. Cheers!

They are all good but the original recipe is Pasteis de nata de Belem in Lisbon. I don't have gluten sensitivity eating the bread or deserts in Portugal or other countries I've travel to except in the USA & I loose weight w/out trying when I'm home in my beautiful country. I'm so jealous & happy for you guys!!

For that much Road noise, I would think a hedge wouldn't do it. You would need at least a Cinderblock wall.

Road noise? Build a barrier of sorts. I know it can be done. You can build it out of natural bush and trees too I believe. Looks like an interesting project...
