Art school and tens of thousands of dollars spent, hours slaving in factories and restaurants to repay the student loans... proportional divider NEVER MENTIONED! I've learned more from Mr. Mark Carder in 2 weeks than in 2 years of "art school" ! smh

Marc, I want to say first - thanks for making this video. I understand that it's been 5 years since you made it, so please accept my comment as coming from someone who started his journey in art last year, and became serious about his need to learn drawing a few months ago. My proportional divider, when used as it's intended, has been the greatest tool for helping me to learn how to draw. I started out using the crutch of a projector and/or an LED light board - which I became aware very early that I wasn't learning how to draw, but how to copy. So, the proportional divider - or prospect - is invaluable as a teaching aid for someone learning to draw and wanting to paint with realism. You said something in this video, however, that I found in error. One of the great benefits of the tool is that it can be used to scale up (measure with the smaller end, mark with the larger end) or scale down (vice versa). When I have a canvas and I want to insert a smaller subject (animal) - I will use a larger reference, and scale down the subject to fit on my canvas inside my composition. I agree totally with your admonition to keep the scale the same when transferring proportions of a subject to canvas, but would add that you can change the scale if you're placing a different subject somewhere else on your canvas for depth of field. I value your instructions. It's two-tools in one used for scale of proportions and can be used either way - making subjects larger, or smaller. You're likely just trying to keep things simple for newbies such as myself - it's easy to confuse a person not familiar with the topic. (me a year ago) I've also found it useful for me personally to pick a spot on my reference subject from which I find my "dots" for guiding me in my drawing and for checking my proportions as I progress. Thank you for sharing your experience and guidance. Your guidance has been very helpful to me in my journey learning to be a better artist.

Thank you ajsparks and barbara! Barbara, regarding transferring an image, just use the proportional divider the same way you would when using it for life drawing as in this video. But measure right on the photo instead of holding it up in front of you. Let me know if that does not answer your question.

For a still life painting or drawing you also have to make sure the table is absolutely level for more accuracy. Basically your proportion divider forms two isosceles triangle at each setting which are congruent to each other, that's why the third side you measure at each setting is proportionally similar to the one you choose to draw or paint.

I just finished my first college drawing course and I spent a lot of time doing something similar with a bamboo skewer and a ruler....this would have saved a lot of time lol.
@christinetempleton76574 жыл бұрын
You can do the same thing with a bamboo skewer, but you have to be extra careful to keep shoulders square, arm locked and body in same spot wash time: that's a given. You also have to measure holding the skewer exactly horizontal and exactly vertical and pay attention to where your thumb is. The art classes I have been in that teach this are simply looking for a method that is accurate and very inexpensive, with minimal labor to start using. There are lots of good things about this way (skewer) of measuring, it's just which method is easier for you. You can also use a different kind of proportional divider that has measuring points on one side. I also think this is a good way and plan to start using it, it's good to have alternatives for many reasons.

Instead of the strings why not use a table fixed to the floor you just put your divider the in a solid surface everytime you measure i mean to the side of the table a piece of wood not so big but fixed to the floor and with your arm extended so you don't have to worry about the chair moving or the misscalculation of the strings and your hands not in the same line. Just a thought.

Thanks for that Tim! But he does not suggest keeping one's back in contact with the back of the chair. I was merely suggesting to viewers, not the artist here. I don't think he would need to do that anyway. Incredible artist with vast experience.

Have you had much success with a metric ruler (math should be easier than traditional units) and a calculator?
@losangulos6 жыл бұрын
Yes. But as someone said its a tool to train your eye. I mean you could take a picture then transfer it to Illustrator and do all the lines in vectors with a mouse then print it in whatever size and just paint that, but that wouldn't be fun and you'll never learn to draw.

@DrawMixPaint9 жыл бұрын
PHeMoX The proportional divider would automatically compensate, as you place the tips of the two sticks onto the surface of the canvas.
@PHeMoX9 жыл бұрын
Draw Mix Paint Ahh understood, so I need to touch the canvas with it. Yes, that makes perfect sense. Thank you for the response! :)
@wolf73799 жыл бұрын
+Draw Mix Paint First of all, I just want to say I do like your techniques and I love your painting style. I began to take up painting from the beginning of this year, hence I have a lot to learn. I did a portrait painting using the grid method and my second painting with the proportional divider. The proportional divider was a God-send. The only problem I have is that I am racked with guilt when I use the proportional divider because of the ongoing debate on whether or not it is a form of cheating. When I have spare time I know I have to practice drawing/painting freehand a portrait from a photograph, but when I am doing a portrait of someone that I am going to give to that person, there is no way I am going to do it free-hand because I am not good enough and it has to be perfect because it will not look like the person in the photograph. You did a video on the 'Artist's Curse' - and I assure you you're paintings are terrific - but my curse is the one lurking in the back of my mind when I have to confess to someone that I "cheated" with a proportional divider. I just wished I was good enough to do portraiture freehand without resorting to the proportional divider and living with the guilt.
@calvancandy83848 жыл бұрын
+wolf727 even when you learn to draw properly - the proportional divider is still very useful if you want to get super accurate - all the guilt is bullshit my friend let it go
@PHeMoX8 жыл бұрын
wolf727 "because I am not good enough and it has to be perfect because it will not look like the person in the photograph." I'm going to side with Calvan on this one. You shouldn't feel any guilt. I'm not even sure if you should confess anything. Also, it might help to get a better understanding of what makes a drawing more accurate in terms of likeness. This literally comes down to proportions of the various elements in a drawing or painting and artists get this right by measuring. Whether 'by eye' and estimation or by exact measurements , I don't really see the problem. I know a lot of painters who actually use projections of photographs and tracing to get the likeness as quickly as possible. Not necessarily because they wouldn't be able to get the likeness with free hand drawing otherwise, but simply because it would take too much time. With their portraits being fairly cheap, that's simply the inevitable trade-off. Of course, if a commission allows for you spending 100 hours on a single painting, I'm sure you could justify investing more in drawing everything by free hand with more measurements by eye. But even then... I don't think there are that many artists that really can visualise extremely accurate proportions and put them down on paper without having to go over it again with measuring in some way or another. You know, it reminds me of some people who say using an eraser is an artistic crime, instead of a useful tool. I think I'm going with the eraser being that useful tool to me, just like the proportional divider is. Anyhow, just my 2cts.

_dnimfoetats _ only if you draw in 1:1 proportion (one taken measure from object equals to one measure on painting)
@TheSascharaubach8 жыл бұрын
oh, it is a very american way to prove your proportions. never seen this before. normaly, in europe we check proportions like between length and wide. a length has no proportion, cos the length is just a line. a line is a 1d object, it cant have proportions, it only have a legth. so what you do in the video, is comparing the length of the object, with the legth of your drawing, but not proportions. you need at leest a 2d object, to have proportions in it, like a rectangle. so if you have a rectangle you can chek the proportions between the wide and length sides. so you simple need to compar both, and finde the difference. you can use a simple pencil or a brush for it. and you can measure from any distance, becouse the difference (proportion) is allways the same. sorry for my bad english, im from germany
