Patrick Childress Sailing Wasn’t worried about coppercoat or propspeed, you two know what you’re doing. I was concerned about the virus and both your healths. The word on the street ranges from it will kill you to you won’t even know you have it. Imagine the truth lies somewhere in the middle. After 9/11 we altered our life style so we were and are well prepared. Not nutty wild eyed ready but a more conservative branch off that same tree.

Eric haskell Yes...it’s hard to know what to believe about the coronavirus! It does seem to mostly be taking out those with complications. My 44 year old brother tested positive for it, and while he knew he had something at least similar, he never skipped a beat or a day of work with it ( already was working at home) . All he had was a cough that would come and go, a tickly throat, and a couple of days of a congested chest and more migraines than he typically gets. He goes today for his day 28 testing. He’s not so sure he is completely over it since he is still coughing every other day or so. Thanks for your concern...we are ok so far...and like passages...boring is good. Hope you and your family are all well, and of the percentage that doesn’t even know they have it! -Rebecca

Yes..the copper coat is definitely sensitive to humidity and wetness! You don’t want a pile of copper paint n a puddle under the boat! But if you can get a nice dry week...you should be OK for the Coppercoat application. You won’t regret it...we are so pleased so far. But remember, better to spend 5 days sanding with 320 than 1 day with 80. Patrick’s middle name is “Why Wait” and sanding after the Coppercoat application was no exception! -Rebecca on SV Brick House

I’m impressed Patrick , I last dived in the Atlantic side of Cape Town many years ago. It’s just sooo cold. Nowadays I would never get in the water down there. I am impressed with that copper coat of yours. Really seems to working well. I could not get propspeed shipped here to RSA with Amazon but managed to get a new comparable Israeli product called prop guard ESP-600 which is nano technology. Same price 😩 but I got some and will be trying it on my new Kiwi props when I launch next month( hopefully all going well and no more lockdowns) It’s still so hot up this end I believe Cape Town is chilly already. Maybe it is too late for you, but it might help someone else; I just got this from Propspeed, as there is a new distributor in S.A.: Signature Power Systems Email: [e-mail] Ph: [phone] They did not say what city they are in. The last time I put Propspeed on my Kiwiprop, I put 3 coats of primer on the blades which gave it a more uniform gold color. We will see how two coats works out this time. Hot where you are in the tropics, but much like air conditioning where we are in Hout Bay. We have the little plug in heater going all night and most of the day. Before the lock down, we would see the children jumping off the pier into this cold water. People from the yacht club sail in little boats, full sail, in 20 knots of wind, kicking up all kinds of spray and then there are those who paddle around in kayaks and paddle boards. After watching a lady clean boat bottoms here, I couldn't wimp out, and the video had to be made. I am not looking forward to wiping the hull before we leave but next time I will wear my thin shorty with the long sleeves then put on the thicker Farmer John along with pouring warm water inside! Of course that water in Richards Bay is body temperature. Good to hear you are making progress.

The best and cheapest anti fouling I found is fresh and salt water. I kept my 1930 wooden 10m motor yacht on the upper River Thames which was fresh water, at trip down to the coast into salt water would burn off the fouling. This was replaced by sea water creatures, then in turn they would be burnt off on our return up river. Yes of course I did have to apply anti foul but the fresh/salt water treatment did mean the stuff lasted longer. Dear Rebecca please accept my deepest condolences on the sad loss of your dear husband Patrick.

Hi Andrew. We are locked down in Hout Bay, still. No problem really, we have destinations, not ETAs. There are plenty of little boat jobs to do and these videos take a tremendous amount of time, so we stay busy. We would like though, to travel this area by car some day and not be forced away because of some visa time limit. We will see. Thanks for the positive comment on the Propspeed video. We got lucky to have the other boat to compare things to.

I use coppercoat on my 12 meters motorboat since y2002 and it is still perfect. Once a year I just cleen up with high pressure water and that is it. Ready for another season. If the sea water is warm occasially I scuba and clean the hull with scotch brite. I saved a lot of money along 17 years.

If we get half of that we will be thrilled...but REALLY thrilled if we get what you and many people get out of Coppercoat! I would think for seasonal sailings it would be an absolute nobrainer as you haul the boat each year and can do a nice pressure wash! But for us sailing around the world, where haulouts aren’t readily available in many areas...it’s a must have as far as I can see...assuming it continues to be easy to wipe off!! I have a 1979 Iroquios Cat that the previous owner with members of his yacht club coppercoated 9 years prior to my purchase. The situation now is that it is defunct and needs renewal (mussels around 3 inches thick deep, ) so its a beach it and redo. My brother lived in Noordhoek for many years before returning to the UK and I have had several beers in the "Red Herring" in 1997 (ish) A fantastic area to live. You went 4 months before clean the bottom.? I’ve been in the marine industry for 23 years and most of my clients scrub the bottom every 4 to 6 weeks. If you’ve been using other paints and only diving on the boat every four months, no wonder it takes 2+ hours to clean it. I almost recently applied copper coat on my bottom. After seeing these results, I wish I had. Congrats on the success so far.

I've always been interested in copper coat, but I've heard so many horror stories I've always avoided it. It's good to see someone actually have a good experience with using it. In theory copper coat should be the best antifouling product, although in practice it rarely works as expected. The best antifouling I've ever used contained loads of Tributyltin biocide, but for very good reasons the product is no longer available. Thanks for the copper coat update, I am looking forward to see how it holds over time.

From what we have experienced with applying the Coppercoat and from communicating with others about their Coppercoat, it really does appear people go very wrong with the application, the same with Propspeed and then complain about a failed product. Still keen to cc but in uk atm and we have a steel biat so waiting to see the state if the barrier coat - may be worth going right back and redoing the epoxy before even thinking about it. Ref cleaning, use a broken windsurfer boom - 1 arm - with whatever cleaning device on end. A piece of wide plastic tubing with water bottles inside helps push the sponge etc onto the hull whilst the curve and stiffness of the boom is ideal.

I applied CopperCoat to my Catalina 470's bottom last June, and have been quite pleased with the results too. I used cold galvanized zinc on the running gear, and that was a disaster. I had the boat out of the water in Dec/Jan for some other work, and redid the running gear with PropSpeed - need to jump in the water soon and check on things. Hope you're enjoying Hout Bay and the Cape Town area - your video of the back side of Table Mountain made me a bit homesick!

We are all still in lockdown in Hout Bay. But it is an easy walk to the stores if we need anything. Don't wait too long to wipe your Propspeed or some of the harder growth can get a better grip. I found the more often it is wiped, the better. Thanks for the tip on the cold galvanized zinc. It is always good to know what does not work. Where are you living now?

Good to see that lock down is not getting you down. I wonder if a high pressure washer with an angled brush attachment on a long extension pole and operated from a tender alongside would do the trick for cleaning the bottom. It works very well for cleaning algae off the walls of my swimming pool.

Hi Bert! No boredom here. There are always more little boat projects that Rebecca thinks up and then the videos take a tremendous amount of work. I used to operate a lot of 3,000psi pressure washers with a 15 degree tip or once in a while a rotating 0 degree tip. I think that is what would be needed under water and could be difficult to hold onto from a dinghy, maybe it would work better from a dock. If used by a diver, I wonder if it would be more of a jet propulsion for the person using it. That could be fun. Now we need a restraining system and it would be interesting to give it a try. @@RVLifeNOW Jet propulsion? Yessiree. I did the pool by getting in the water with goggles & snorkel and a plain straight nozzle at first. I experimented a bit and found that, even with flippers, it was hard to swim against the jet. In the end, I put on my ankle length gumboots to improve traction and did the job standing up. So some sort off anchoring for a diver will be needed (or prepare to be very very tired) Mind you, I've also found my washer will take paint off a wall so maybe not a good idea on fibreglass.

Hi Dave, always great to hear from you. Many of the pre haulout videos are about sailing or operating a boat away from an anchorage. Those go way back to leaving Sri Lanka, when I first started making these videos. But, as you can imagine, since I didn't know anything about making videos, the early videos are a bit bumpy and lack the editing that the newer ones do. The next video, we put up on the 30th of April, will be about sailing out of Richards Bay to East London, S.Africa. The second part of that will be sailing on to Hout Bay, near Cape Town. There are some unconventional sail handling shown plus Predictwind and other routing information. You will see, I pretty much singlehand this sailboat. I am so used to it, I just don't need the help, although there are times, help does make things much easier. Rebecca is our electronics maestro and enjoys that, so does most of our route planning. Sometimes I disagree but that is rather seldom. In the second video of sailing to Hout Bay, I highly recommend granny bars at the mast. I do most of the main sail handling at the mast and the granny bars are a tremendous help. Wish I had put them on a decade ago.

Many boat owners hired professionals to apply their Coppercoat, but it appears even they do not always read or follow the application directions, and hence there have been a few disastrous results of Coppercoat applications!

Yes...it was good to have such a convenient comparison to see what antifouling is doing at this point, compared to what our Coppercoat is doing. And to see how different it was for cleaning the bottom! It really used to take 2 or 3 hours to clean the bottom when done regularly. Now it’s less than 20 minutes for one person. Yes...we are so happy to have Coppercoat and Propspeed working so well. We knew Propspeed would because we have used it a number of times. But I wasn’t sure about Coppercoat especially when we were not able to follow the Coppercoat instructions perfectly. Very pleasantly surprised. The Cubic Mini wood stove...really really good. Each time we have a fire onboard, I feel complete joy...it seems to make the atmosphere on the boat quiet, and peaceful...and so nice and warm. Sometimes I get nervous we won’t be able to find wood when we get in to the thick of it, and will be cold...but when I feel that warmth, I feel more confident that we will find wood and have great adventures doing it! We have definitely put some great products on the boat this year. We have quite a few more to tell you about too. 10 months out of the water, and then another 2 here, we have had a GREAT year of updates and renovations to Brick House!!!-Rebecca

Great instructional video. I have used Propspeed many years now but have always had a professional do the job but seeing your video I think I can do this. I also wish I could use Coppercoat but with an aluminum hull it is risky business. I know I can use a barrier coat but one scratch and those copper ions will start eating away at my hull. We have a retractable keel so we do beach the boat occasionally so the possibility of a scratch is real.

I was in Fiji some years ago & a friend asked me if i wanted to go halves in some antifoul bought from there navy , I put a couple of coats on & 4 years later it was still working , I found out it was 30 years old ? I got an honest 3/4 to 1 knot from changing from a fixed prop to a kiwi prop , great post - Fair winds .

He was already very disappointed as that could easily be seen from the dock, but he also put a GoPro on a pole and got a better look under the water. He did not have the best contractor in Richards Bay. But we see yards screw up boats everywhere in the world. In Malaysia, a friend paid a yard to put antifouling on his catamaran. A week later, that antifouling was falling off in sheets so he had to haul out in another yard and have it all done again.

May I suggest you get yourself a "Woolly Bear" in combination with a Dry Suit and sufficient lead weights to give neutral buoyancy and even after hours in cold water you'll not feel the cold. This set up also backs up as a survival suit (without the weights of course).

A dry suit was a must for winter dives in UK waters. 2) Are you aware that you can use socks and T shirts under a wet suit to provide extra thermal layer, it could make a difference for what you do. It's not as if you are going deep and the wet suit compresses and is less thermal efficient. 3) I always used a dry suit in combination with wet suit boots and ordinary everyday socks, wet suit gloves and double wet suit head cover in winter UK waters.

Patrick, I had to replace a bronze strut on a 35 year-old Catalina which had turned pink and was no longer structurally sound. We assumed galvanic interactions ate the zinc out of the bronze strut. Luckily Catalina Direct could supply a new strut and instructions but they claimed the strut didn't need a zinc because the fibreglass and the cutlass bearing kept the strut isolated from other meta!s. We noted nearly all struts in the yard had zincs, so we drilled a hole and stuck one on, but much smaller than yours.Have you ever heard the theory that a strut zinc is not needed?

Great video,...again... I’m very interested in the Kiwi prop, and how it performs. Great to see you in the water after that torturous refit period. Regarding the steel wire brushing, the issue there is that what happens is that iron gets smeared onto the stainless surface. That iron then allow rusting to occur which then progresses into the base material causing pitting which is very hard to repair. What you should do when the shaft is stripped is hire or borrow from somewhere one of my WeldBrush (or really any of its many copiers) machines (see WeldBrush.com) which will allow you to electro polish the shaft in situ. These units remove iron from the surface of the stainless first and then other elements more slowly to bring the surface up to an electrical polish finish. The units use phosphoric acid which is electrically heated up to 400C exactly at the surface by the brush making the acid extremely reactive giving a fast reaction. The conductive high temperature brush that makes the process work was my invention some 20 years ago in Australia. I’ll watch you Hookah video next for guidance on what the important things to know and what to buy.

The water here is very chilly but people here grow up with it and don't know the difference and how ocean water is supposed to be, so they just put on a wet suite and go in! Very informative video-thx! These ecologically friendly antifoul paints have one big drawback- they don't work! Thanks to the over zealous "preservationists" driving our regulations. The old red Cu bottom paints worked very well in Alaska- only had to scrub the bottom once per year and repaint (of course much colder water than the tropics). Government boats and ships can use whatever they want to- they are exempt from the ridiculous regulations! I worry a bit about copper coat because the State of WA and Ca originally passed regulations outlawing Cu based bottom paints. Wa suspended the regulations since no one could find a suitable ecologically friendly bottom paint! One article indicated you will have to scrub the bottom (in Ca warm waters) every 2 weeks!) and that all you'll have to do hire a diver!! Thx again!

From what we have read, the state of California gave an award to Coppercoat for being ecofriendly. But I agree with you. The endless overpopulating of America, the endless bulldozing, paving and building, and garbage dumps, which they like to now call "land fill", creates so much pollution runoff from cities and towns which runs into rivers and streams to pollute the coast, yet they want to blame so much on pockets of sailboats.

One of the greatest challenges we have is to protect marine life by whatever means necessary, as a matter of survival, on this planet.. As I remember, copper in antifouling in Australia was causing deformities in shellfish in rivers which was one of the triggers for banning this type of antifouling. Apart from mining plastics from the oceans on an industrial scale, the next big thing is to ban Nano plastics in washing powders, which is used to scrub clothes cleaner. Unfortunately they have found these particles in fish proving that the particles have entered the food chain. In the bigger picture, having to clean the bottom of your boat is a small price to pay. At university, someone put a Macdonalds hamburger on the notice board. Nine months later there was no mould on the same hamburger. Maybe everyone should glue hamburgers to the underside of their boat.

I think you may be thinking of copper in paint. This is encapsulated copper in epoxy...much much different. This doesn’t release copper in to the water, and doesn’t kill the organisms. This just makes it an inhospitable environment to do much growing on because they can’t burry in to it. Hence why the marine growth brushes off like dust. We care greatly for the environment and one of the reasons we chose Coppercoat is so that very little would be released in to the water. .-Rebecca

50 degree water is very cold to me. Looks like it worked great. I just splashed in December after a bottom job and havent touched it since splashing. We on the NC coast near the ocean. Well, within sight. No growth at the water Line so far. The water is cold though. I'll wait til it warms up then jump in. I had prop speed on our motor yacht and it worked great for 1 year. If you operate in deep water your good. The first sand bar you cross or shallow water it will burn the prop speed off fast. Its not good for ICW travelers. On a sailboat the prop may be far enough away from the sand. Thats the million dollar question.. For ocean traveling it would seem great.

The wet suite I have is my old one from Rhode Island. It worked pretty well up there but I no longer have the upper part. I should have first put on my thin shorty, which has long arms. Next time. I see divers in the water here often, cleaning hulls and they always seem comfortable when they come out so that built up my courage. I am going to try something like that before we leave here. Also, someone showed me his fine mesh fishing net which he string under his boat with a bungee on one end, secured to the toe rail while the other has a line coming up to the opposite side of the boat. He scrubs his boat with the net and the bungee serves as the second person to operate it.

I have never used 80 grit paper to clean the bottom of my hull. I have used scrapers of all sorts and different scrubbies. After the application of Coppercoat, and before launching, the Coppercoat must be sanded prior to launching. Please watch our Coppercoat application video.

How to clean your hull without getting in the water? Unfortunately, Hullwiper is far too big for your sailboat. They have a commercial ROV that cleans ships hulls with pressurized water jets and a vacuum with filters to prevent biofouling from polluting the harbour. They can clean a Post Panamax sized ship in about 20 hours.

So Coppercoat do not recommend using 80# Grit to prepare the hull before coating. Shark skin is like 80# grit sandpaper to touch. Never seen Barnacles growing on a shark.

Where did you get that? Watch the Coppercoat application video that precedes this. It takes a lot of sanding to make sure there is "tooth" for the Coppercoat to adhere and 80 grit is good to use. Before launching a boat that has been treated with Coppercoat, it shold be sanded about three days later with 320 grit to expose the copper from the epoxy body. Because of bad weather, we had to wait a week to sand the Coppercoat. By then, the Coppercoat hardened up tremendously. Sanding with 320 was next to useless as we could not get the finish to looking like the sample picture in the Coppercoat instructions. It took 80 grit to get the job done. Maybe we should have then gone over it with 320 to get a smoother finish, but we did wet sand, with green scrubbies, to get into the valleys of the finish. But at least the Coppercoat appears to be working much better than any other antifouling we have used. Thanks for your comment.

Probably wouldn’t want to use anything more than a sponge or cloth...probably a low pressure jet cleaner would be all we need. Hm...I have to wonder if just a hose with a sprayer on it would work. But I guess we would still need to go in the water to wash the Coppercoat. Something gentle but thorough would be good. And one where we don’t have to get wet.-Rebecca

I can't think of a better place to be locked down, than Hout Bay. Grocery stores and what we need are just a 15 minute walk away. Great scenery, here too. Not in the video we put up on Thursday, but the video we put up 2 weeks from Thursday, we will show scenes on our arrival in Beautiful Hout Bay.
