There are No cons to 8mm mausers. 😊
@OG_Okie_98_sooners2 ай бұрын
My first gun. A Yugo Mauser. Tell you the truth, the only cons I would say are readily available supply, and effective range. Which is tops and stretching it at 1,000 yds. But other than that it's a great round to have recommended for bear and elk. And other things...... And they make armour piercing for it which is why i still have that gun

The only two issues that I have experienced are: 1) most Turkish surplus ammo would split the cases when fired. 2) sourcing .323 bullets for reloading is more expensive and not as readily available.
@OG_Okie_98_sooners2 ай бұрын
First off, Turkish ammo was loaded per usual German specs. That's why their hot. If you wanna reload ammo, get Greek surplus. The bullets are boatail 198gr, and the cases and powder are bad. Get em cheap.

Sometimes the ammo situation gets better. When I was a man of limited means when I got out of college my first center-fire rifle was a 6.5 Carcano. In 1982 there was still a lot of 6.5 surplus out there, but it was hangfire city. The only new production stuff was Norma hunting ammo at 35 dollars a box, even back then. Things are better now.

Im a big fan of 8mm, it has great ballistics and hits the steel plate hard and stings my shoulder less than a mosin somehow

Tell me about 8mm ballistics and why you prefer them
@OG_Okie_98_sooners2 ай бұрын
@@theblindsniper9130id prefer it for ranges up to 800-1,000 yds but that's it. Heavy projectile and the options of exploding ammunition, armour piercing, tracer, and light ball are the reason Id shoot it. Think I'm crazy? Go check out gunbroker for those types. Other than that, it's great for black bear, elk and deer. Bullet drop is somewhat significant if you pick heavy ball but that can be adapted. Cost of ammunition can range from 36 cents a round to 2$ a round. Ask me more questions. Its my main gun I shoot.
@johnp94022 ай бұрын
@@theblindsniper9130 that's actually a hard question. I don't have all the data memorized. I've only made a couple hundred rounds to use in my Mausers. I just remember the B.C. was pretty high and good velocity for such a heavy round so it shot fairly flat.

Honestly, the biggest issue I have with 8MM Mauser Ammo is handloading. Since 8MM Mauser is a .323 diameter bullet or .318, it is pretty much one of a handful of cartridges that use that specific projectile. Depending on the bore diameter, I can handload projectiles like .308 or .223 into close to a dozen or more cartridges. On top of that, finding the projectiles for reloading is a pain since it isn't very common in gun stores and will need to be ordered
@johnp94022 ай бұрын
I get my stuff from Graf and sons. They've always had the correct diameter bullets I need
@Courier-Six2 ай бұрын
@johnp9402 kinda proving my point that they need to be ordered online which gets expensive fast. I can order 200 count boxes of .308 150 Gr Hornady bullets. Can't really do that at the same price for .323
@steveh49622 ай бұрын
While I do have a few boxes of factory 8x57, also I have plenty of low cost plinking ammo. Handloading is the way to go. I cast my own 175 grain .323 bullets. Brass is very simple to make from .30-06. Former American Rifleman writer C.E. Harris has a cheap loading using a small amount of Red Dot and cast bullets ("The Load"). Bottom line: those Mausers are just too young to retire!

8MM Mauser is great. I paid $400 for 1,000 rounds a year ago. 40 cents a round for a old milsurp bolt action rifle is cheap nowadays. It was 1940 Yugo ammo. I have shot over 100 rounds of it so far. The accuracy out of both of my Mausers has been good with that ammo and I have had 0 hangfires or misfires. I've heard people say 1940 Yugo is some of the best surplus 8mm and there might be some truth to that statement.

I can think of a handful of cons, corrosive is top then availability 😅 other wise the age is an issue. I was checking the necks on a box I had and 80% of them spin… so I wasted money on a box of ammo I can’t use without risk of blowing up my M24 and KAR98 😢

It is an obsolete cartridge. That's why they made the 7 mm Mauser which is still hanging on.

In your opinion, are the M48 and M24/47 actions strong enough for the Turkish ammo? I think you've said before..?
@MegaBait16162 ай бұрын
M-48's have mostly Elm stocks that are beefy for the 154 gr. light ball stuff but it's pushing at close to AR speed 3,000 fps. I bed my Large ring Mausers been fine with M-48's but the 24/47's are narrower and I'd def. bed the action if you want to use the Turk stuff .. MB ..

They are fine. Unless the powder has broken down, the Turk 154 gr. is loaded to the same specs as the old WWI German ammo. It’s not inherently “hot”, just old and not necessarily stored the best.

Regarding the cost of modern 7/8mm mauser or any other old military caliber, companies like SnB/PPU only do a limited amount of runs per year so when they do turn up they are priced accordingly. Once all that european surplus disappears they will likely pick up production as these calibers are slowly coming back into popularity. Wish us aussies got all that surplus mauser ammo... :(

1912 Argentine Mauser...rechambered to .30-06. A gun with a story. Sharp looking rifling with nonworking safety. Gun smith fixed safety and the problem with the safety may explain the sharpness of the rifling. When Argentina rechambered the gun, it came off of timing so the safety not working causing it to be shelfed as unsafe on shooting range. I need to shoot it more.

You might become that old codger that sits on the porch cleaning his shotgun, if by the time you turn 65-70, they allow you to keep and bare arms. But if not, you might be that old codger in the trench with a young buck teaming up to try and get back those rights.
