I use a Garrett ball bearing turbo (GTP38R) in my truck and I love it. Spools so much faster than stock, used it in both auto and manual setups of the same truck and its amazing. Really helps to build boost quickly after shifting. Easily holds 40psi when you step on it. Truck has over 400k miles on the 7.3l making around 700ft/lbs.

Ball bearing is only need if it is a large turbo that fluctuates a lot in speed. For a truck that maintains boost for extended periods a ball bearing is not necessary. Ball bearing maintains clearances for longer between impeller and housing, journal bearing would do this also except wear happens when oil supply is turned off and turbo is still spinning, so a ball bearing tends to last longer. If an electric oil pump was used for priming and engine before and after it turns off, a journal bearing would last just as long. If you service a journal bearing often which does not cost much at all, it would last a long time.

Have you considered offering a ball bearing turbo upgrade for the 12v Cummins trucks to help balance quick spool and lower EGTs for towing? Seems like that would be a great offering.
@jsallerson6 жыл бұрын
At 4:09, you say that the turbo in question cannot pass enough exhaust gases through the turbine wheel. Is this something an external waste-gate could solve while keeping that specific or similar sized turbo? There must be ways to flow boost through it up into the higher rev range even with the limited exhaust wheel size.
@BEAMERNOOB Жыл бұрын
one point i would make is peak horsepower isnt everything. i would argue that if you have two cars identical in every way except one turbo is cable of spooling even a tiny bit faster if you ignore all outside factors and influence the faster spooling turbo is going to produce more average power and be an overall faster car
@jbaker88712 жыл бұрын
Diesel turbos. Combination for fuel efficiency and max power or turbo desired for efficiency. Compound set up is a waste gate better than using turbo gate? What pressure to open gate into second turbo. How much boost till your destroying the turbo.

I just recently ran into a problem with my turbo blowing oil. Its a ball bearing innovative brand turbo. They went out of business back in 2011 so I have no way of contacting them... I checked for clogs and mad sure the oil level was right... its on my motorcycle by the way. I had someone quote me 1200 bucks to replace the center section. Does that sound about right? I'm mechanical inclined so I would do it myself. Is it hard to do?
@manaankbatra26596 жыл бұрын
I was thinking if it could be a possibility that the ball bearing turbo could be opened like a tiffin box, with two ball bearings on each side. Then there could be a shaft that can be used like an axel on a swing arm and then the whole oil cooling can be tightened up with the shaft or axel itself. Then the two different parts holding the turbo fans can be screwed on 2, 4, or 6 screws depending on the size of the turbo. So if your ball bearings do break. Then your engine, even if on a carborater (don’t mind the spelling), would just stall the engine. So you know you have to service the turbo. Hence the bearing housing stays intact. And all you have to do is change the bearing and clean the oil. I mean it was just an idea. As I was thinking of putting a oil cooled turbo for my Yamaha rajdoot RD 350 2 stroke. In which the oil coming from 2 openings come into the oil cooler and then exit into the 2 turbo for each cylinder, which then will go into the engine. This kind of design being in a 2 stroke just helps you maintain your bike easier hands on, plus increases the life of all the parts as well as reducing cost, and overall consumption. *just an idea. *please advise.
@manaankbatra26596 жыл бұрын
And if you were thinking that whether how both the turbo fans rotate together, then what the idea was that the shaft through joining the turbo fans, could have a bolt which clips onto the fan on both sides. Like with a special kind of washer which could pierce into holes on the turbo fan, which when tightened the shaft and the turbo fan, so the shaft screw and turbo fan rotate together. So it can be dismantled and put together. And there 0 to mere heartbreaks with the design.

I want reliability and a bit of torque. But am I going to have to sacrifice fuel consumption? Thx for vid. Well put. Ther might be some insane inertia with the ballbearing. Could have a tendency to almost backspin in certain applications.

Powerstroke 6.7 I would suggest in looking in to Elite Diesel Engineering or Industrial Injection Diesel Performance or you might check KC Turbo I’ve been around Naturally Aspirated and Forced Induction (i.e. Turbocharged & Supercharged) Gas & Diesel engines the vast majority of my life. Diesels and Higher Displacement Engines (even small four & six cylinder engines) of any type will perform 75% to 80% better than stock with a Double Ball Bearing Turbocharger. Journal Bearing Turbochargers work best on like very low displacement but very short thrown/15+k RPM capable power plants.. examples: Formula 1 Ferrari 458/Maclaren F1/2015 Ford GT EcoBoost LeMans & Gran Prix classes. So to put a journal bearing turbocharger on a diesel three things can happen 1. EGT’s (Exhaust Gas Temps)/EOT’s (Engine Oil Temps)/ECT’s (Engine Coolant Temps) will be higher than with a stock turbocharger 2. Oil Changes will be more frequent due to the increase in demanded lubricant in the turbocharger alone 3. MPG’s will drop due to a higher demand for the use of more fuel to rotate the turbine In other words a journal bearing turbocharger will make a Diesel engine work harder and can cause more & faster wear and tear whereas with a double ball bearing turbocharger it’s the complete opposite. How do I know such details simple.. was raised by a father who’s an S.C.C.A. (i.e. Sports Car Club Of America) Safety Official for Laguna Seca and Thunder Hill Raceways out here in California. His life of the automotive engineering and creativity inspired me to learn more about the physical characteristics of engine displacements and what advantages there are in the various levels of the Forced Induction and Naturally Aspiration aspects. Note: if I’m able to give an assistant manager of an O’Reilly Auto Parts store a five minute history lesson of the Ford V8 (from the Mercury/Offenhauser Flat Head.. to the Holden 289/302/351/390 with offset firing orders from the original Ford design.. to the hostile take over of the Ford Motorwerks Plant in Germany during World War II which was used in the manufacturing of the German Pänzer Armoured Divisions).. I think it safe to say I’ve got my bases covered in the Automotive Engineering field. I hope this helps.. if you want more insight on such join the forum PowerstrokeNation.com There you’ll find blue oval certified techs/engine knowledgeable DIY’s like myself/performance parts retailers and staff that give you more insight on this question. Hope this helps better answer your question. Good luck & May The Force Be With You👍✌️😉😏🙂

I've been looking at Precision 7675 Gen 2 or a GTX4202. What can you tell me about how these turbos compare??? I'm looking at making over 1000hp at the wheels, by don't want to ruin how the car drives too badly on the street. It's an auto car with a big hi stall if you were wondering. I saw a Real Street vid where they did a dyno vid of a 2JZ running the PT7675 and it seemed to come on fairly early for a turbo that size. By 4500 it was making over 600hp to the tires and made a peak of 1298 at around 7500 - 8000RPM. I could live with that!!! LOL ;) I want to make big power, but I want it to come on as early as possible as well

Hi there, I run an E-7 Mack in my boat for lobstering every day. It has a Garrett which was designed for just that engine. When Volvo bought Mack in early 2000's, Volvo said no more Mack marine engines because they have a marine line. Now the turbo parts are obsolete, I have old ones from other engines but I am gonna be SOL someday. I'm asking who might be able to take the data from my turbo, and match it with another marine water cooled turbo that will do as good a job or maybe better? I did put a JD 525 hp one on there and am running it now, but I'm missing 100 rpm on top and fuel consumption has increased 2gph. I'm sure somebody knows and can help me, but finding this person has been pretty hard so far. Thanks

Have you spoken directly to garret, seems like the people who built it would know all about it

Im pretty new to turbos and trying to learn more. Is, say, a Borg Warner S366 compatible with hoses, wastegates and intercoolers of different brands? Or are they designed to operate with components of the same brand?
@egibson22668 жыл бұрын
good question, I just bought an S366 for my 302 Foxbody.

Wastegate, bov, intercooler etc etc brand doesn't matter. What's more important is picking the right size wastegate and everything around it.

You can mix and match whatever you want to. But when it comes to something like a wastegate that is going to keep your engine from over boosting and running lean and blowing your engine buy something good life a tial or hks and make sure it's big enough. And don't cheap out on fuel injectors.

Lower the EJT's? What are egt's? and how is reducing them beneficial? I'm using a single cam 1.6 so I'm thinking ceramic BB with 2.75 exhaust, not too big right?

+Bjorn Kingslayer of the egts get too hot your motor or turbo can blow, the colder it runs the less likely the exhaust housing is to crack also
