The only "pro" that matters to me (and erases all of the cons) is that I am disabled and live alone on 36 acres. My doberman is 8 years old and her time left with me is growing shorter. I wouldn't last one night without her unless I've got another dog that I've bonded with. So, after 2 years of searching, I've finally committed to adopting a 7 month old lab/pit bull mix. She's arriving next week. Yes, they will both be females. Wish me luck!

yes, dogs aren't around very long. Keeping two dogs allows you to start looking for another one after one goes to the great doggy heaven in sky. It stinks to be in between dogs, and an old dog and a puppy are both not the same as having a dog in its prime years.

Consider getting a cat, that’s what I did. Same pros- good playmate for the resident dog with less pros since a cat&dog’s play is less destructive vs a dog&dog. Cats will be small enough to transport easier with your dog and less work in terms of walking them.

Very good video! My older GSD (13) passed away in Oct. I have been debating whether to get another one. I feel you are spot on with your pro's and cons. Two are great, one is much easier!! I have decided one high drive dog is plenty!

I needed this video. I have a GSD and thought about getting a second one. It's already enough to worry about the one I have when we go on trail hikes or camping, and the bonding time is really nice. I think I will just hold onto that for awhile.

Ive always had between 2-5 dogs. In the odd situation that our 2 older guys passed last year and our Catahoula in now a lone wolf ...... can not WAIT to bring our Dutch Shepherd home next week !! We LOVE travelling and purchased an RV that can easily hold us and them . Guess it just depends on priorities in life.

I have an 8 year old female and a 7-week old male puppy. It should be interesting. But she was once a puppy to a 5 year old male. They made a great team!! He passed away in August. Euthanasia. He was 12.

I have second thoughts about getting a golden retriever pup to hang out with my 1 year old golden. You can’t just put them together to play 24-7, lol, it’s a lot of extra and different work

Hey there! I am obsessed with this breed for many reasons. I'm planning on getting one in the next year for guard work (as well as family pet :-). I can't find a whole lot of information out there about the differences between male and female temperaments, personalites and drive, and I know that in some other highly intelligent breeds there are stark differences (like how female dobies are like "machines" and males are like giant sacks of goofiness). Since you have one of each, what is your opinion for my purposes? Thanks and keep posting more videos!

We have two Dobermans and I went the same route M and F but we also got them within a 2 months of each other. Our first Doberman we tried to get a male about a year later and she wasn't having it. How long did it take for Jax to share the house with Cinder? We have just bought 20 acres in northen AZ to start a farm and were going to switch to Dutch or Mals. Love the vidoes...

This is a really good video! I'm going to check out your other videos. Very good information. I'm disabled. I have a single dog. When we (2 roommates, my wife and I) get a house, I am getting him a sister. We will have a yard. I will be VERY particular about who I rescue at the shelters I look at. By the time we have the house (with a yard,) I will have the money to handle a second dog. As for jealousy, the dogs will learn. If I can take my APBT from not even knowing what a leash is to what he is now 2 years later, I can kick both their asses into shape (it's a figure of speech) if there's any friction. Either they will give me the time to stream or they won't. Either way, I'll have time. Not this half-time where I might be able to stream or I might have to spend the day with Chip because he's lonely.

Any suggestions about age? My dog is 8, I obviously do not want a puppy, but will a 3/4 yo dog be too much? I found the same points as you for A) matching temperament B) male and female being better, but age is an interesting one I haven’t found much on

Sometimes another dog becomes more "Rival" than companionship. They learn tricks faster because they also learn from each other but they can also learn bad habits from each other. Also, a large dog can be alot to handle, but 2 can really be hard. Small dogs do okay. Also when dogs get old they can require alot of vet care. 2 dogs can get overwhelming quick. Alot of dogs alone will just sleep comfortably all day. Then get worn out just trying to stay awake on the weekends. Lol.

there is a huge benefit, especially if you have two dogs then one misbehaving dog can learn from the one that has sense

I took 2 GSD puppies from my friend's oopsie litter. Glad I took my 2nd pup. Biggest con is costs double, but they are worth it. I wish I could get a 3rd 😂😂

​@@predictionpain2632 How did that work out?Two of my dogs (Kuvasz) pretty much destroyed a new lawn I had planted years ago--mostly from chasing each other. I now have an 18 month old male, and am considering getting a 9 month old female. I have a large new patch of lawn starting now, and am wondering how to spare it the same fate. Surrounding it with fencing would be very $pendy I'm thinking. All else I can think of is to restrict their play in my yard, and take them elsewhere to play--doable, but far from ideal. Or restrict their access with an underground 'invisible' fence. Maybe it is all moot, as for a lawn to become tough enough that they don't wreck it likely takes several years anyways.

I've had dogs for 22 years. Always two so they won't be alone. When one passes, we mourn for several months and then I've gotten another. Now I'm thinking of adding #3. But I've only got 2 hands! Time will tell.

Cinder doesn’t usually want to go because she is afraid of my truck. She associates it with bumpy off road trails that we have been on. I usually just take her to nearby trails now, I save the other stuff for Jax and I.

First don't let them play in the house, I have a 60 lb pit/lab mix 8 yrs old, I have a 14 yr old chihuahua & just got a Malinois & Shepard 3 months old. I started the training right away & I haven't let much interaction with my other dogs, that is key. cause you want the bond with you not the other dog.

This is exactly what I observed.. he has set up a free for all. I watch a solid trainer who as once kept two mailonous and they weren’t allowed to play in the home.. they had to be come. Now he has several kids and dogs and same rule.
