I own a 2,5 yo male. I've had GS before, same as Border Collie. There is nothing like Dutch, I would never get anything else from now on. These are velcro dogs, HIGH energy, obedient, extremely smart, eager to please. Depending on how you teach them, they could be very human friendly, or very suspicious. The biggest con is the whining, I agree 100%. If he knows we are in the car to go training, or playing, he would not stop until we get there, no matter what you say, do or yell. If the drive is one hour long.... well, you will not listen to some music in that car. Obedience training is a must; regular training, mental stimulation and serious exercise - a life necessity. This is a dog that you get knowing that you will need to spare at least 2 hours per day working with the dog. Not a dog for novice owners, not a dog that you rely as a protection dog unless you previously train the dog in that direction. By definition, these are WORKING dogs, not something that you toss in a backyard, or take for nice little walks twice a day. But it is totally worth it!

I've never trained mine to attack. And he will do it on command. Genetics usually comes into play if yours doesn't attack.
@fs4637
@fs4637 4 жыл бұрын
@@kole6146 Agree, they do attack without any training, as many other breeds, but for protection work the dog needs to be focused on handler and on potential attacker. Other breeds, like GS, Cane Corso, and few others are more easily focused on the handler without much training, if there is a bond there. As for DS or Malinois, they have so much going on, they are so hyperactive that, without proper training, they tend to be all over the place. With the proper training, a DS or a Malinois could surpass breeds traditionally used for protection.

@@fs4637 ya maybe because I am able to take my dog to work 7 days a week makes the difference. He's very put together in the head. He runs off leash on the ranch that I work at so since he was a baby it's just been all command oriented with him. He's had to protect me from a car jacking . Gave dude the order to get back in his truck. He didn't listen told Hank to eat. He follows my lead and temperament. If I'm good so are you. If there's beef Hanks the butcher lol. Most of these dogs will never have a off leash job so his imprinting and trust levels are different than most of his kind. I've had pits rotties and gsd and this dutchie is far superior than any others that I've owned. The bond is super strong.

My dog is basically the same when we take him to training he has been better so he doesn’t bark as much as he used to but now he takes a toy and he whines it’s a lot better than him barking because he barks really loud but he is a really good dog I deafly suggest others to get this dog breed as long as they have The time in the space for this dog it is extremely important to exercise them since they are a very energetic breed if you do not do this correctly it could cause a lot of construction and anxiety for the dog and for yourself please if you are to have this dog breed treat it right because when I first got my dog he was so skinny like you could see his rib cage it was very sad I’m glad that we got him because now he is strong and healthy his life is definitely better now

I own a 2yo male dutch / malinois mix. He's my first dog and I live in a small city apartment.. After getting to know other dog owners and learned what they're doing (or rather NOT doing) with their dog... yes - definitely not a breed for everyone / beginners. I'm up at 05:00 am and we either go for a jog or we go into the nearby park to exercise (30-60minutes). After work we mostly go to the woods (1-2hours).. sometimes before bedtime we go around the block so he can relieve himself but lately I was just too tired.. He's has so much energy it's unbelievable and outside he likes to let it all out. In my appartment though he is really quiet and calm and sleeps most of the time unless I encourage him to do otherwise . We had our difficulties up until he was almost a year old only because I was listening to everybody. Do this and do that. "No.... this is how you need to train your dog" and so on... Then I realised I just need to open my god damn eyes and ears and the only one I need to listen to is my dog himself.. See what does work for him and what not. From that moment things went straight uphill... Now it's almost like I read his mind as well as he read mine... so much that it's scary sometimes. Where in the beginning commands needed voice and a hand sign and still weren't always clear to him he now understands what I want from my freakin' eye movement only (!) He's _incredibly_ smart and sometimes he thinks he's too smart. It's now a common thing that people approach us and ask me things like if I'm a dog trainer or dog whisperer or how I did teach him this and that. I kinda have the same answer now since it's getting annoying. "It's the breed. He does 90% of the work and 10% is my input" or "he is a real quick learner" and so on. I really do believe he is very special and I am grateful for having him. I enjoy life so much more with him around and he's the best training partner for me... and since I do box I even taught him how to get knocked out by me for christ sake. I agree 100% on the whining part. Its the most annoying thing for me!! every time we're in the car and we're going some place where we train / have fun / etc. he starts whining about 10 minutes away from the destination... and somehow he KNOWS when we're getting in that 10 minute range... even though if we drive from a complete other direction. I think it's the smell of the woods that's in the air or the river or something.

I had a working kelpie, not a DS or Mal etc, but your point on listening to everyone resonated with me. Other people only have a few minutes to condense their life of experience so they'll give you an overarching bit of advice. But you live with your dog all the time. Only YOU have the intimate experiences that let you know exactly how to work things. Breed traits are a thing, but they run along averages. Individuals are individuals. You have to speak up for YOUR dog. No one else can. Paying attention pays off!

@@juanquintero1618 Get a prong collar, tough chew toys, bones, and a strong leash (kong brand). Prong collar is optional but these dogs get excited easily, especially at around this age since theyre still technically pups. it makes training super easy and makes correcting them easier. tough chew toys. they love to bite. cant stress that enough. they LOVE to bite. read that again and again. They WILL bite you. just be ready for that lol. But its how they initate play, relieve stress, and interact with most things. that being said, they will rip apart weak soft chew toys and make a mess. get them a variety of different texture chew toys but make sure they're all tough. i get my dog bones to chew on. chew toys are good but whenever I take him out, he needs something to carry and chew, other wise me or his leash are the next best options. letting him take a bone with him is good cuz if im in the store looking at something or checking out, he'll lay down and focus on his bone, trying to eat it, and not be super riled up about whats happening around him. get a strong leash, he'll chew through a weak one lol trust me. save yourself the money bro. lastly, spend time with them and bond with them. Getting this dog was the best decision ive made in a while. i trust him, he trusts me. he would protect me without thinking twice. he has super sweet moments where he lays completely on top of me and just wants love and cuddles but then he has moments where he's on 10 and ready to go. everybody that sees him is intrigued by him and afraid. he doesn't like strangers or other dogs and im cool with that, he doesnt have to. he just cant be biting people and other animals for no reason and he doesnt do that either. theyre loyal to YOU and only you. he would rip a mans hand off me for in a second and enjoy every second of it. but he trusts me and doesnt act on instinct, he looks to me for guidance. they have to trust and respect you. i dont even use treats when i train him, just positive reinforcement and it works just as well, even better because he's not expecting food in return. i speak soft to him when we arent out and training and im firm with him when he needs to be corrected. he has to know you're in charge. i make him wait for his food,i make him wait to get in and out the car, right now we're working on waiting even when im not near him. they'll listen to you and show you endless loyalty, just treat them right and treat them fair brother, my dog is cool as fuck and he isnt even a year old yet.

My dog Charlie is almost nine now and she is hands down the best dog I've ever owned. She was surrendered as a puppy to a shelter. I picked her up thinking she was some kind of weird mix. Learning this breed in an organic way was an extremely rewarding experience. I'll never own a different breed of dog ever again.

That is so true and weird!!!! I say weird because your story is pretty much exactly the same as mine! I also say that because this is like the 5th story that I've read about a dutchie being saved from a shelter. I thought mine was a GS mix also. Then my son did some research and found a picture that looked exactly like my dog. He is the best dog that I have had as well. I've been around, trained and raised many GS, but I think that dutchies take the cake. They do have a lot of energy and are a lot of work, but so worth it in the end

Nice Dutchies. I like how you are incorporating the sleeve as play. Keeping it informal, not worrying about the punch or re gripping. To many “experts” warn folks to not be the sleeve yourself or the relationship will be permanently wrecked. If you are training them in formal bite work then there are merits to that but damn it Dutchies just want to bite things and letting em have a go at the sleeve and you releasing it to them is after a good tug is some real good bonding. I know to never mess with a dog that carries a tire around in his/her mouth lol.

Exactly, I may not have a PhD in bite sleeves but I’ve been playing tug of war with dogs since I was a little lol. It’s already in their DNA to latch on to stuff, no training necessary. They haven’t developed any bad habits yet, it’s just a game to them. Thanks for your comment.

I just got my first Dutch shepherds and he is 2 months old. He is the smartest dog. He’s already potty trained, knows how to sit and jump. And is getting there with the whole attack mode. He literally got between my sons legs when he heard noises in the back yard and was protecting my kid. I loved that. I’m never ever getting any other type of dog. He’s so easy to train and is such a good pup baby.

My new 10 week old Dutch Shepard/Belgian Malinios has been keeping me very busy. He is so smart, even I am amazed. Being well versed in large dog breeds, including wolf/dogs, Rottweilers, pit bulls. It only takes me a few times each day of training to easily train him. He doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. I was outside with him at dusk and called him to come in the house, he turned around and stared at something. I couldn’t tell what it was, I ran to put my glasses on but what ever it was ran when it saw me. I caught him last week walking up to 2 deer that were grazing in my very large yard. I’m on several acres on the river. He hasn’t found the river yet, thank goodness. You are right about their being very vocal, the first few days I only got a few hrs of sleep. You have beautiful Dutch Shepard’s 💞

I bought my first Dutch Shepherd Puppy after losing my 14yr. Old. GSD Mix. My puppy Hop so, Far is easy to train and a blast at the park... his agility skills are just incredible right now, and he asks my for obediance commands on walks. He also, might enjoy scent games and activities later on but doesn't have the patience long enough to track scents right now,...which is fine, I find it boring sometimes, too, agility is so, much better...so far, he has been fun and easy to train. Hop likes to cuddle and get hugs or be picked up, he has been a pretty even keel...balanced puppy. I hope he stays that way as a teenage dog! Lol

I adopted a D.S. as a rescue when she was 2 y.o., she recently died unexpectedly, under anesthesia during a dental cleaning. She was 5 y.o. The nearly 3 years I had with her was the best experience I have had with any of my dogs. She was very verbal, which I actually enjoyed, not an enormous amount of whining and if I told her to settle down, stopped. Also did not see her as any more active than the male Sheltie I had for 14 years or the fenale Shepherd/doberman mix I had for 13 years - that one was very high energy. My D.S. was smart, loyal, devoted, intuitive - she attended my husband's funeral with me and went around comforting everyone. I will say she was a nag and very routine oriented. She could also be a drama queen, in a good way. She made me laugh with the joy and enthusiasm she had for...just anything. She was a counter surfer but smart enough to do it when I was out of sight. The last thing she stole from the counter was a fresh baked loaf of bread, which she got while I was out grocery shopping. I came home to nothing but crumbs. I found half the crumbling loaf in my bed, under the covers! Oh, and she never chewed anything. I still have all her soft toys from when I first brought her home. First dog I have ever had that didn't destroy my house, my shoes, nothing. She loved car rides, hiking with me, was a great travel companion. She made me fall in love with the breed. I am hoping to, some day, find another rescue D.S. to adopt.

Great looking pair of dogs. I've never seen a dog learn as much by literal example as dutchies. You might try that approach. A word about the tires though. If there's any wear they do on the inner hoop, dump them or cut them out with an angle grinder or something. Years ago our dogs shreaded a tire and flat toped their k9s before I knew it. Those steel wire hoops are sharp under that rubber. Thanks for the video.

Watching your DS’s is just like watching my Samus. She’s a DS, I got her from a breeder two years ago. I got the pick of the litter but she got parvo and died. Another lady had returned Samus to the breeder and I got stuck with her but I love her more than anything now. The whining she does usually amounts to “Why are you staring at that stupid thing (laptop / computer), the suns outside, lets go run around”. She’s with me or wants to be with me everywhere we go. My ex and I have another dog and when I watch Zelda, our ds / pit mix, Samus will try to protect me from her while I’m making food. Thankfully I have a huge back yard. I take her out about 1.5 times a day to the park but without a huge yard she would destroy my life. She runs the back yard like an agility course. She’s got these paths that she runs. In the house, I have to put blankets on my couches because of the way she jumps and digs in. Every time I get up, she tries to get me to take her outside. The most annoying thing that she does is try to herd me when she wants me to do something she wants which is usually all the time to go outside. Or when we go back in, she tries to herd me to stay outside. She doesn’t bark at random things but if someone comes to the house, or walks down the ally; she’s all over that. Some guy looked over my back hard and she jumped up at him. Anyway, random thoughts about mine after watching yours. Cinder looks identical to Samus. I got her from a breeder in AZ. Good luck man, I’d love to see more videos. Maybe I’ll get some tires for her, she looks like shes having fun.

Actually my third Dutchy (male, intact) during the last 36 years in a apartment in the middle of Berlin. All three of them "rescues" - the last two from the shelter 7 month old with so called possible "bite issues" , my first one (in the 80ies) directly in front of the veterinarian where they wanted to euthanize him with 4 months because of crazy mental behavior and bite issues. Never had any problems with one of them. Best family dogs ever. As a private person, non professional dog owner i am convinced, that we need to come back to the freedom that everybody has the right to learn by owning a so called not first time owner dog. The society needs to come back to respect dogs again and not to lie about possibly danger coming from dogs, cats, horses, cattle whatever I am deeply convinced, that each human being is to so much more capable, if he concentrate on himself and follows his instincts If we would teach again that wrong and disrespectful behavior of human beings towards animals can and will have serious reactions of the animals we will live in much saver and peacefully society

My Dutch is almost 10 months and weighs in at a lean 104 pounds! He looks like a scaled up version of Cinder, complete with white double tiger stripes up forelegs to shoulder.. Father looked like a 75/25 German Shepherd/ Malinios with Black/tan 100# while mom is all White with Malinois features and 60#. The 4 pups in his litter were all males, with 1 looking like a German Shepherd, 2 with the reverse brindle and 1 with typical Mal features and fur. I've never seen a dog as vocal or with such an oral fixation. If he isn't chewing on something, he is often trying to put his mouth on my forearm or hand without biting. His various vocalizations and gestures are very distinctive, to the point that I can usually tell what he is trying to communicate. Incredibly intelligent. If I say, "Toy", he will pick out a toy and bring it to play. But If I specify "Ball", "Bone", "Woobie", etc, he brings that. He knows the difference between 'outside', 'front yard' and 'back yard' and gets complex commands like 'Go to [name]'. He even tells us when his water bowl need filling. He is completely obsessed with and protective of the wife and yodels for her every morning. He is not 100% trusting with me, always ready to jump back if I reach out too quickly or try to grab him without first calling him calmly. The personality is somewhat bipolar, being both incredibly sweet but also very anxious and bitey. They thrive on having a regular schedule and being rewarded for doing their scheduled tasks. They beg to be trained if there is a reward at the end and he will even bring me a training toy if I take too long with my morning coffee. He does not like being alone, except when sleeping in his kennel at night. He seems to like to be arms length to 10 feet away from me, or 1-3 feet from my wife.

Thanks so much for sharing this! Absolutely can relate and so appreciate this video. Oh that whining - I'm so glad that's not just my Dutchie! Definitely get the impression that he whines seemingly without even fully conscious of doing so, very unique mannerism for sure! Anyone else's dutch shepherd make a loud whine/howl when they yawn? I've never heard a dog make these sounds before and have had many!

Great video and beautiful dutchies. I have a male gsd and a female gsd/mal. They’re both always on but do have a low speed or pause if I’m cooking or doing dishes. They lay behind me and wait for me to move out of the kitchen then pause is over lol. My male runs next to me on my motorcycle in the neighborhood and I have gotten him up to a little over 30mph for short bursts. They’re amazing animals.

My wife works at home, the dog is with her 24-7. He’s 10 years old now. He’s still very athletic and requires at least a hours ball throwing and such. He rides wonderfully in a car. He sheds nonstop. Mine doesn’t whine or destroy things in the house. He is basically chill but around at all times. He’s cool

A Dutch Shepherd actually has the same behavior as the Dutch themselves. Direct and no nonsense hard work enterprising intelligent stubborn energetic (preferably wants to cycle all day hahaha) Love healthy food. don't get messed with. If you treat him right he will go through fire for you and you will have a friend for life. If you are unable to lead him, he will take over that role with all its consequences Just a dog like the country he comes from. Just pure and honest dog. Greets from the Netherlands.

Have you tried a bowling ball with finger holes filled in for Cinder to push around the yard. If the finger holes are not filled she will carry the bowling ball around with her teeth. Since she loves to chew try giving RAW bones to chew & eat. Must be RAW not cooked. This will also help keep their teeth clean. The bows are messy so give them when crated or on a floor that can be mopped. Some of the RAW bones I bought still had a little meat on them making the floor greasy. How are they alike & different from the Belgian Malinois?

I guess I have to get a bowling ball now, that’s a great idea! It depends who you ask, some say the only real difference between the breeds is the coloring of their coat. Some say the DS has a bit less drive and is more mellow. I just know they are very similar. Thanks for the comment!

Predictionpain Let me know how the bowling ball works out. Years ago I knew a Rottweiler breeder who gave one to her male to play with. He got plenty of exercise pushing that ball around. Don’t get one to heavy until she gets use to the ball

I´d love to get started with shepherds, but I´m not sure which breed to choose. I had a dog before, but I´d describe her as a perfect beginer dog: a little schnaucer/terrier mutt from the shelter with quite a few Health Problems but not much behavioral wise. I have fallen in love with dutchies or groenendaelers aswell as, czechoslovakian wolfdogs even if they aren´t shepherds. I would love to get some advice which one would be more suited for a person with some, but not much dog training experience but with a willingness to learn and invest lots of time to proper trainig

I can’t really speak to the other breeds but for me I was really nervous that Dutch Shepherds would be too much to handle. Reading the forums made it seem like you needed to be a professional dog trainer and exercise the dogs all day long. This is not true. I have owned a few different breeds over the years, the only difference with these are they are a bit more energetic, way smarter, way more protective and they genuinely care about me. If you have taken the time to research the breed, like playing/ training dogs and have free time to do it, you will be fine owing a a DS.

It’s crazy because my female mal can only do certain activities so long before she injured herself because of how intense. Specifically her feet, she’ll start chasing the ball or running with me and the scooter but after a while I start seeing small blood spots on floor, and then I check her feet and they sometimes her lower skin is slightly split or cut or scraped . She doesn’t complain but I have to spot her activity or limit it

Great dogs. How you raise them will determine if they try to shoot out of the door every chance they get. Give them regular exercise and bond with them and they won’t try to “escape”. It has very little to do with the breed of dog.

Great video and very useful information! I think the temperament and size of a Dutch Shepherd is perfect for me. How much do your Dutch Shepherds shed? I've had several German Shepherds and a Labrador and both breeds shed too much for my lifestyle now. I'm hoping the shed factor is minimal. Any comments would be helpful.

Twice a week for mine. I have tile. Mine is always with me and watching me. If I don’t take her out at least once a day for a walk and out back to run around... many times a day, she gets... ornery. So make sure you’re willing to put time into the ds. They’re not a breed for a person who wants a passive dog. These will change your life but its super rewarding. Mine understands me, I know it sounds stupid but I swear she knows what I’m saying.

I really love this breed and thinking about getting it once I'm financially a bit more stable. Only living in an apartment tho. I work at a shelter and could bring my dog with me so he could play with the other dogs all day long tho, so I guess that makes it reasonable(?) On the few free days I would go out a lot of course. Do you think that's very selfish of me or could it work for a dog like that?

Hi I am planning to buy a Belgian Malinois but I am overthinking about destruction in my house. I want to get one because our village is so quiet along countryside. In addition I want this dog to guard my house my mother and nephew as well. I have medium space outside and small backyard. The most concern for me if this dog can jump the fence around 1.5 meters high? I told my mother that don't train the dog to jump often so she will not get used to it. Actually I am not there to train the dog because I work overseas, but I am so worried that nobody can guard my house so I decided to get one soon (Female). Please advice to me if it is necessary to get this kind of breed or I will select another breed. My mother is 54 yrs old and my nephew is 12 years old do you think they can manage this kind of dog? Thank you so much if you will respond to me.. I am your new subscriber from the Philippines! Your videos are totally great and worth watching for. :)

Make sure your family really wants a dog and that they will take care of it. If they understand everything that goes into it and what these dogs need, it could work out. There are others dogs that are protective but don’t require as much attention.
