I've been listening for your podcast for a while now, great content ! It has helped me a lot with my Japanese learning. ( Also, funnily enough I had never seen your face, but when I saw this thumbnail I assumed it was you instantly, not sure why lol )

It was weird hearing your voice and seeing your face at the same time! I've listened to your podcast for as long as I've been serious about learning Japanese and have always found it a valuable and very entertaining resource for learning real life Japanese. Thanks so much and I look forward to listening to many more Learn Japanese Pod episodes in the future. お疲れさまです!

Alex seems very genuine and nice. As a fellow Brit, I laughed a lot when he said "hmm... zip!". I had heard of learnjapanesepod before but now I am going to check it out! I think it will be helpful to listen to more spoken Japanese :)

RULES in JAPAN: When I moved to Japan, nearly 5 years ago I stayed at an AirBnB while I looked for an apartment. Meanwhile, I also wanted to open a bank account and get a mobile phone. After a few days of apartment hunting, I went to buy a phone, but when I was about to pay, they saw that my resident card had no address on the back, so they said they cannot sell me a phone. So, I went to the bank thinking I could deposit some of the cash I brought from America. They said, what is your mobile phone number? I said I cannot get a phone because I have not rented an apartment yet. So, after I rented an apartment some days later, I took a day off work and went to the local government office to get a stamp on my resident card, so that I could buy a phone (and then open a bank account).....but I was not scheduled to move into my apartment for 10 more days....so they said NO to giving me a STAMP! I said, ummmm, actually, I moved in today, my mistake, did I write the wrong date?....they said OK then and gave me the STAMP! Crazy story.

I know I'm late, but omg yes! When I was staying in Japan I had exactly the same problem. It was like this vicious circle: "I cannot get a bank account because I don't have a phone because I don't have a bank account because I don't have a phone because aaaaaaahhhhhh!!" Glad you managed to set foot by now though! :D

It helps a lot when it's not too fast.

As a fellow Brit still living in UK - but can speak Japanese a bit (日本語を食べられる!笑) and have travelled to Japan many times - I have to say this was one of the best, most thoughtful discussions I've seen on KZbin about the Pros & Cons of Japan vs UK. Well done both! And now I'm going to check out Alex's website, which I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of!

みく先生、なんて最高な動画!!! As far as I know as opposed to Japan vacations' 20 days (in the 11th year), in Brazilian companies (public or private) workers have right to a fixed period of thirty days of vacation since the 1st year. Besides, in case you are not seriously sick you can go to a public health center and get a sick note without having your salary or any of your vacation days cut.

we have the same thought about the Japanese のルールを守る過ぎ even if it is not really much a big deal to slightly oppose. Such annoying sometimes but I like Japan, just hard to deal with it sometimes.
The NHK is something foreigners always complain about, I follow a channel of a Brazilian guy living in Japan and once he said to those NHK people "Nihongo wakarimasen" repeating it 10x One week later ANOTHER BRAZILIAN KNOCKED HIS HOUSE AND IT WAS FROM NHK These guy are not kidding.

There seems to be so many Japanese related KZbinrs that are at best below average. Before you learn Japanese you really need to be aware that working and living in Japan can be very difficult for various reasons. After being made aware of these reasons then you can decide whether it’s worth it coming to Japan or not. I am not talking about minor issues like food, weather or pollen(the man yutas useless video) but about more serious issues like harassment in the workplace which is unfortunately common in Japan. It’s essential to know that Japanese views are given preference over foreigners views and that the Japanese group essentially only trust each other and others are basically outsiders. I cannot stress how important it is to know these essential parts of the Japanese culture which people avoid talking about. I learned the hard way that complaining in a Japanese environment is Pointless and you should just move companies and hope that eventually you will find a decent working environment... My biggest fear for many years here has been the Police who should be avoided completely if possible. The Charles Ghosn Case highlights the type of Justice System here but I have also heard and read many unfortunate stories of foreigners and Japanese being unfairly treated by the Police. The rights of fathers to have access to their kids if a mother decides to kidnap them is also a very well known issue.. I remember reading somewhere that a Japanese company actually said “hiring foreigners is troublesome as they complain about wages and bad working conditions”.. I never seen any KZbinr talk about these issues because they are difficult and Controversial I guess.

The problem is that this is your experience and not the experience of everyone in Japan. Maybe life is like that in Tokyo, but here in the country side in Kansai near Kyoto so many of these problems don’t exist. Japan is not at all perfect and I think most videos like this explain that well. But you ur experience isn’t the only experience people can have in Japan.
@KevinKaffy4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Callan I think you should check out a youtuber called “Dogen” who has actually bothered to learn Japanese and has worked in many different companies in Japan also shares the opinion that working here is not so great but life outside work is good...he advises to try to work independently here but I would say also finding a good progressive foreign company with associated benefits is also a good option..
