A couple of the big Pros that you didn't cover, and are a couple of key factors in my love for Wyoming, are the political culture and gun culture in Wyoming. Although I sometimes feel Wyoming is not nearly as conservative as I would like or libertarian in some aspects, it is still the most conservative state in the country. Because of that strong conservative libertarian streak, it is not surprising that Wyoming has the most Pro 2nd Amendment gun laws within the country. A person can open carry or concealed carry here with no permit. The legislature passed a law prohibiting any state or local law enforcement and a t from enforcing any unconstitutional gun laws. In fact they made it the duty of those same Law Enforcement Officers to arrest Federal officials trying to enforce unconstitutional gun laws. How awesome is that?

My wife and I are California expats living in Wyoming. We moved here 15 years ago, should have moved here sooner. You missed one benefit: no rush hour. I grew up in So. Cal. and the traffic drove me crazy. Also, Democrats/liberals/progressives can still be good friends with Republicans/conservatives/traditionalists because the polarisation of society with divisive identity politics has not happened. I think Wyoming is a well governed state with a relatively efficient and effective state government. A quick trip to the WYDOT office beats a long line at the DMV. I sometimes write my senators/congress person and I get a personal response rather than a pre-formulated response. Outsiders like me are welcomed heartily. Buy your winter clothes at L.L. Bean and you will be a lot more comfortable in the winter.

I dont believe that just anyone can like wyoming. It takes a certain kind of person to choose to live there because of the intense wind and lengthy harsh winters. I personally like winter and strong winds. Most people understandably dont. The distance between major towns are generally over 100 miles apart. Being stranded from your car breaking down or having a flat in the winter at 20 below zero can cause enough anxiety for one person, if nobody comes along your life is at risk. Plan trips accordingly. While there is beautiful land to hike and explore, you are probably many miles if not a hundred from a hospital if you were to get bit by a rattle snake. Which are very common here. If you dont have anti venom with you.. well youll be lucky to survive. Plan hikes accordingly. Aggressive wolves and wolf packs are now a big problem in wyoming thanks to the reintroduction of bloodthirsty wolves by the federal government. Dont camp in the wide open without a gun..or 2.

If you want to keep the place as you like it maybe you should not tell everyone on KZbin how great it is. That happened in Oregon and look at it now it's just an extension of California and lots of California folks with California ideas.

I grew up around Glenrock and Casper Wyoming, I now live in Missouri. The winters are cold and the wind is something else. Grab a good coat and winter gear. Have a good car because you are going to need it. There are just over half a million people living there. A big city is considered to be around 60 thousand. I love it, once it gets in your blood it stays there!!

Lauren is a delight. I spent 17 months working all over the great state of Wyoming and some of the things that frustrated me were little or no cell phone/WIFI service. Union Telephone has been going through more changes including family issues and it has greatly affected their service. The wind howls constantly often in excess of 50 mph and makes it difficult to do even simple things like open/close your car door. The suicide rate in Wyoming is off the chart. While I was there four people that I was acquainted with took their lives. Black ice, during the Fall and Spring the blowing snow melts on the roads and then freezes when the temperature drops in the afternoon. It can take up to two hours for help to arrive even if you have cell phone service. Drugs and alcohol abuse are out of control and there is very little law enforcement. Local folks (Baptists and Mormons) love to gossip and tell you how to live your life. Antelope are everywhere. I was driving past the planetarium in Casper and an oncoming vehicle swerved to miss an antelope and hit me head on at 30mph. She was talking on her phone btw. If you drive a Honda/Toyota, speak with any kind of accent, wear a yamaka, have obvious tattoos/piercings, ride a Harley, have Colorado license plates (greenies), fish with worms, listen to hip hop/rap, eat vegan, sort recyclables, take a local person to lunch, or wear Levi jeans instead of Wrangler you will experience some sort of prejudice. Hope this helps.

I'm extremely shocked to hear about the high suicide rate. For having the highest rate in the nation, I would have expected to see PSAs about depression and mental health. I did not, however, there are quite a few PSAs about meth use. I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. We used Verizon and never had an issue. The winters are definitely rough. Very long and extremely windy. However, I disagree with your last statement about prejudice. I don't doubt your experience, but in 7 years, I never received any prejudice for our natural lifestyle, such as eating organic, eating mostly vegan foods, recycling, composting, giving birth at home, cloth diapering, nor for religious views. My husband worked with many Mormons and we were never once scolded or pressured to change our views. Again, I'm sorry your experience was quite negative and made it difficult (if not impossible) to enjoy the beauty. Based on your experience, I don't blame you for hating the state.

@Alex Vogt That is such a difficult decision. It would be really tough to move in high school and have to make all new friends. I moved here as an adult, so it was definitely a different situation. Have you had a chance to meet any of the kids in the town in Wy. or see what activities are offered at the high school that you might be interested in? Maybe that would help make the move easier. If you're still not interested in moving, could you ask your family to wait until you graduate high school?

What are some other things I should consider before I make the big decision to move there (other than what you’ve mentioned in your video), thank you!

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said!! But a few things you left out were: Sales tax is at 5%. Most states are 7 1/2 and up to 12 1/2%. Wyoming also doesn't have any State tax! The property taxes are a lot lower then most states and Gasoline and groceries are a lot less then most states are as well! The crime rate where I live is very very low! The cold winters has it's advantages. It's too cold to be standing on a street corner and try to sell drugs!! :) As you can see, I ride a motorcycle and Wyoming , to me, is the best place to ride ever! It's also closer to Sturgis! :) OH! Don't forget the clean air!! When it rains, it smells SOOO good!! I never just stood in one place for 5 minutes just to breath and enjoy the air before until I moved here! In big cities when it rains it's just muggy and smells like rotten eggs!! You have a woman who commented below that 100 miles away to a shopping mall was too far away, well, where I live I'm 75 miles away from 2 big cities. However, where I used to live in AZ. I was 2 1/2 hours away from ANYTHING! Now that is Isolated!! I've been here 6 1/2 years and it gets better every year!! Hope you continue to feel the same way!

+Rainbowrider JT Where we lived, sales tax was 6%. We recently moved to Oklahoma, and it's nearly 9%, yikes! (And they tax everything, including food.) I agree with you on all your points! Oklahoma has been more expensive in all of those areas (and it's definitely still an affordable place to live compared to other states like Colorado or California.) And yes, LOVE the clean air! And the starry nights! My husband and I used to sit out on our back deck on bitter chilly nights because the stars were just amazing.

" Yup, this is why I really think if I can make decent money as a welder (at least 45k a year) I could actually afford to live in Jackson like I want to. It's only the housing that is so crazy expensive. And I've looked around, you can actually find good deals on houses for rent here and there around the Jackson Hole area.
@rainbowriderjt7833

Alex Sparks There's other places that are nice besides Jackson hole! Not that it's not nice but a lot of Rich, yes, Rich liberals have been taking over and trying to make it like Cal"lib"fornia!! Last year I helped put glass in this giant hydroponic building that was originally designed by Norway or Finland, can't remember which, and some from the original project came to Jackson to oversee the construction of this new one. It is designed to collect water not only from the rain and snow but just moisture over all and then use all of that to water the plants growing inside so they wouldn't need to use the city underground water! Well guess what?? They (the city) decided that that wasn't going to happen! After it was 80% done the "liberal" city counsel decided to side with the Obama administration that the water coming from the sky belongs to the government and so we're not allowed to collect it!! And that goes for the farmers big time as well!! Montana, Oklahoma and here in Wyoming has had a few arrests and legal actions taken against said farmers but all 3 states have been fighting it for some time! Now that Obama is gone maybe that will turn around, but in any case, my advice is to really take a long hard look at that area before you jump on in! alpine is only 35 miles from there and are not so "stringent" from what I'm aware of! Just trying to help! Keep up with the welding! That's a really good field to be in and can be very hi demanding!! Good luck sir!!!

+Mark Macias If you're planning on visiting, I would definitely suggest coming in the summer, when the weather is amazing, but if you're considering a move, definitely at least make one trip in the winter. It is still beautiful, but the wind can be a bit rough. Rodeos are fun! I've never been to the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, but I hear that it's one of the best (probably on par with the PRCA Finals in Las Vegas). Local rodeos usually just have amateurs but it's still fun to watch.

+kingbadger Awesome, that's quite a move! Fort Collins is only about 40 minutes south from Cheyenne, and they have a lot of chain retail stores, as well as a dang cute downtown and a big university (although hopefully you'll rather come to UWyo in Laramie for football games!). Cheyenne has a nice mix of stores and city entertainment while still having big open spaces right outside of town.

Does Wyoming have fast Internet? Sounds funny.. but I've lived in country areas in California that didn't get DSL or Cable. Right now I live in Vegas but reliable Internet would be something important for me. Are there some cities you can recommend? Thanks

I once lived in the little resort town of Saratoga (sometimes known as 'the poor man's Jackson Hole') and here's my two cents worth. The summers are fantastic--warm and sunny in the day (no humidity; sometimes windy) and nice and cool/pleasant at night. Winter can get very cold BUT the cold cold days don't last very long. A day or two of very cold weather and then its back to the 30s or 40s. The snow is moderate in the winter and looks beautiful falling on the mountains. The highway road crews do a fantastic job of keeping the roads clear for travel. Wyoming is famous for its winds and Saratoga has its share of that but it's MUCH windier north of Saratoga in Rawlins. (Ugh a prison town with lots of unpleasant transients.) The closest hospital is 40 miles away in Rawlins. 50 miles south of Saratoga and you're in colorful Colorado. And 2 1/2 hours south of Saratoga is beautiful Steamboat Springs. (The drive is very scenic.) Housing is rather expensive in Saratoga either to rent or buy. Lots of wealthy people live in and around Saratoga. The town has one grocery store and a Family Dollar. Several fine restaurants--the Hotel Wolf, Platte Valley Pizza, Bella's, and the Saratoga Resort has a microbrewery as well as teepee hot pools. And Saratoga has a free, 24-hr hot pool with showers and lockers. Don't pass up a dip in those healing waters--great for your tired back after a long drive. The local police are friendly, helpful and easy-going but the Wyoming State Police are not--they're essentially revenue collectors--avoid them. The local populace are nice--if you encounter rude people chances are they're not from Saratoga--probably Detroit or somewhere equally rude. Don't be surprised to see a herd of deer ambling through the town or in your backyard and antelope are in the hundreds on the outskirts of town. If you have questions let me know.

Well Wyoming is pretty in the summer months to visit BUT if you need to work there good luck getting a job that pays anything worth while nothing is that cheap in Wyoming. Lived outside cody for 6 years fortunately didn't need to work but when you get older as I am you need to start to think about medical care I can assure you that wyoming does not have the greatest medical care . For us we had to go to Billings Montana for anything beyond a common cold and even then the care was not the greatest. Almost all the good Doctors are in or around the big cities around the USA because of the clientele and the money Doctors like money very well (pretty in the summer )

Hi how are you ? thanks for this video. My husband and I are planning to move to Laramie Wyoming. We chose the state and town together it took a while to figure out what we wanted and we stumbled across Laramie WY and just knew we wanted to be there. We are planning on visiting in two weeks for 3 days to experience some time there and to see the town. I was hoping for any advice you can give to moving to Wyoming we are all the way in Connecticut, my husband is transferring his job to Laramie and i am searching for employment although im not having much luck getting responses with my address being is CT same for calling rents no one seems to get back how can i get help so we can get things rolling here.

I lived in Laramie a while ago, but I had moved there before finding a job (not the smartest move, but I was young). I would suggest bring persistent and calling instead of emailing (if that's what you're doing. Some businesses in Wyoming are pretty adverse to technology. )

Ya, Star Valley was a beautiful place and still is only now not many native Wyomingites can afford to live there, alot like Jackson Hole. Both places are full of rich-out-of-staters that have moved in and changed the area. It is a lot like Vail and Aspen Colorado. Not many natives go there any more except to pass through on their way to some where else.

Hi Lauren, my husband and I are considering moving from California. Can you tell me how far the mountain are from Cheyenne? Also is the commute to Fort Collins Colorado bad in the winter? If you have ever driven in the winter of course. Thank you, Kathy
@thissimplifiedhome1213
@thissimplifiedhome1213 8 жыл бұрын
+Kathy Barkasy Hi Kathy, the Snowy Range Mountains would be about 1.5 hours from Cheyenne. Cheyenne is in the plains. I personally wouldn't suggest commuting so far, because the weather can be sporadic and the major roads do close somewhat frequently in the winter (due to poor driving conditions or accidents). However, I never lived by I-25 (the highway that connects Cheyenne to Fort Collins) and I believe that road closes less frequently than I-80 because it doesn't go through the mountains. I know of someone who commuted from Fort Collins to Laramie everyday, so it's possible...but personally, I'd rather have a short commute. Hope this helps!

40-45 minutes when it's not snowing from Cheyenne to Fort Collins. We just moved here with military orders & considered living in Fort Collins and commuting. Super expensive to live in Fort Collins, (average rent 1600/month) and with the weather here decided better not to commute. Had our first snow storm here last week. The closed some roads. They're good at clearing the roads and not as bad as other parts cuz no mountains & not completely isolated in Cheyenne. lots to do in Fort Collins good for a day trip.

WildBlackMexican Wow you're xenophobic. 1. You're assuming she's from the city. I have a friend that lives in upstate CA in the wine country 2. I moved to Cheyenne on military orders. The people here have been wonderful. 3. Just because someone moves here doesn't mean they'll change it. I've enjoyed trying new things here because I've never experienced it before. Not trying to "Change" it. Kathy Barkasy people have been wonderful here to us. This guy reminds me of the xenophobic people I met in Minot ND. I've notcied only people from isolated areas tend to act like that. Cheyenne is not isolated. People here are very laid back.

We visited relatives there recently, and while we are seeing more POC than we used to, it's still pretty white. With a quick demographic search, it looked like Cheyenne has the largest POC percentage of the bigger cities...but it's still 87% white. It also has a transit program-not sure how good it is, but at least it exists!-a UW campus, museums, botanical garden, live theater, etc. But Wyoming has a lot of big, open space so it would be best to have a reliable car if it's possible.
