Con: It is hard to be away from home for more than a day with house bunnies (and if you are thinking about getting a bunny to leave in a cage most of the time -- please just don't). Bunnies are social animals that don't like change. Sending them to a new location is much MUCH more stressful for rabbits than typical pets. When away from home you pretty much need someone to come to your bunny's home and stay there for at least several hours a day. Pro: Rabbits fecal matter is usually firm, dry, low-bacteria, fibrous material that doesn't stain or smell bad. So they generate less odor than a cat litter box. You still need to change the litter frequently due the urine. Con: Some house rabbits will follow their human companions everywhere under foot. This can be a huge tripping hazard for the humans (especially the elderly) and a big risk for injury to the bunnies themselves of course. To complicate matters, happy bunnies like to run tight circles around your feet. Pro: Bunnies are generally very quiet. They can thump pretty loud though. I've had to get up in the middle of the night because my bunny was thumping under the bed (bad bunny dream?). While most rabbits aren't found of being held tightly for a long time they love to lay beside you on the floor or on the arm/seat of a couch. Rabbits like to relax where they can run to safety quickly if needed - so the ground, with good sight lines, and someone else nearby to help stand guard, ... that's ideal. Being held against someone's chest is usually the opposite of that. Get them used to you by laying on the ground with them. Then try lightly holding them on your torso while you lay on the ground on your back.

Just pinned this. Very insightful, I completely agree. Especially as I gained more experience after owning rabbits for longer, I found these to be true, especially your first con aboutit being hard to be away from home. Rabbits do require a lot of attention! Thank you. :)

Bunnies have different personalities. One of mine is very friendly and she will nip your ankle until you pick her up and cuddle her, she chases the birds and her best friend is a cat. Another one likes to be petted only when on his blanket and doesn’t like being held and is quite anti social. His best friend is his reflection and he runs away from spiders😁

@@amp1984 um what ..? they are NOT submissive. some rabbits can be dominant towards their humans, and that depends on the rabbit and they are not "small". rabbits have bigger breeds and they can be as big as dogs. educate yourself first before commenting a stupid comment on a rabbit video. and why are you even talking about puppies on a RABBIT video?? if u dont like rabbits, then just go away and dont click on the video damn.

poop should have been con#1 haha they poop sooo much my girl is 13 now and honestly doesn't have much longer but if anyone reading this is considering a bunny. they ARE NOT an impulse buy. this is a huge commitment. they poop alot they tend to chew up important things and they do tend to have some personal space requirements because of being prey but. they are WONDERFUL. this is my second bunny my first one was a boy he unfortunately had cancer that would not stay away. im 21 with my second bunny and i plan on having bunnies the rest of my life. the house just isnt the same without a bunnies binkies!

Caity Stepleton Your Good words will Help many interested in rabbit pets. A tip you might not have learned yet is that rabbits will poop far less with more fresh vegetables given them like fresh carrots with their green tops and dry uncooked oatmeal ( it is a rabbits chocolate - they adore their dry oatmeal). All rabbits must have their alfalfa pellets to eat regularly, which will make them poop more because with alfalfa to eat the rabbits also have a special “ singular poop” that is very shiny they need. It is rather like cows in their complex digestive system. They need alfalfa pellets to eat because this “ shiny special “ poop dropping comes because of the alfalfa and it helps keep their intestines and digestion extremely healthy. Then your bunnies will live long happy lives with your love and attention.

Caity Stepleton I forgot to mention that all rabbits will look for and must re-ingest this “special one shiny poop” they need it to stay healthy. A little gross to us, but we’re not rabbits. I adored all my rabbits and will likely get another two bunnies to join my birds I keep now.

Our bun bun ate my house, furniture, speaker wires, base boards, bed foot and head board bottoms, dresser bottoms. We live in a tent now. No I'm kidding but he did chew all that stuff. Very destructive little guys. But man did we fall in love with him. Talk about the most precious and sweetest pet you could ever have. He was so smart and so much fun. We loved the binkies and the honking. All the kisses and grooming we got were a plus. He was so special. Oh yeh one more thing the poop balls are CRAZY...I dont know how one little animal can sh*t so much. Its unreal. He would leave a trail as he hopped around. Its was like they just fell out his butt. It actually became a joke after a while...bun buns balls (i had a male)

Bunnies can be picked up if you hold them securely petting their tummy. They learn to trust you. You must keep wires away from the bunny area by encasing the wires in tubes like a water hose, so they can’t be chewed. You must keep wires high up or anywhere out of their reach. To rabbits wires are like hay to chew. Rabbits are not expensive to keep because they are vegetarian and are born immune to rabies or distemper. You must keep safe organic blocks of wood for them to chew along with hay because their teeth never stop growing. Bunnies can live 12-14 years if kept indoors and seen by your vet regularly. Your vet must know rabbits to protect them from their few health issues. House Rabbit Society will give you a lot of helpful information. Get a harness leash to take your bunny for walks outdoors that they’ll enjoy. Just pick your bunny up if a neighbor dog approaches and you’ll be fine as they hop along with you.

I don't know which breeds may have those extended years but most don't make it past 5. Never had chewing problems since I made sure they had plenty of wood chunks for play toys. They need that to wear their teeth back. They can sense high voltage (110VAC) common in most homes and stay away from it but low voltage cords are one of their favorite past times. Great vid! I would take him out to the playground. He loved running where ever he wanted and nibbling on grass and clover. When I changed positions the teachers who took my place didn't care for the bunny. Bunny pee makes cat pee smell like roses! One of the families wanted him and since he wasn't being cared for by the staff.

There are some rabbits that do like to be carried and cuddled. My first mini lop, Scrunch, loved to be carried and cuddled. She was a therapy animal and would even ride in a baby snuggly carrier that I sewed the leg holes shut on. She would also jump from one person's arms to another (if it was to my mom, Scrunch usually didn't even wait until my mom was looking and just trusted that she would catch her). My second mini lop liked to be carried and cuddled but she usually just wanted to run around and explore. My palomino buck did not like to be held or carried, just pet.

I taught my bunnies to stay on a blanket sized for a double bed placed on the floor in a room with a door or child's gate. When playtime was over, I bundled the blanket up and shook it out in the grass. It was helpful to have two blankets just in case one needed to be washed. They learned the blanket playtime boundary very quickly. I added a liter box filled with hay in one blanket corner. It saved time on lots of sweeping and vacuuming. When playtime was over, they returned to their roomy double decker cage. Bunnies respond best to loving, patient caregivers. Kindness is key with them.

So you say bunnies are a lot of work but I'm wondering how hard it is to take care of a bunny compared to a dog or parakeet (I say that because I have a lot of experience with both). Somebody please answer soon I'm contemplating about getting a bunny to help my anxiety disorders. Thank you! BTW your bunnies are ADORBIES!!! 😊

Depends or what kind of dog you get or bird etc. Bunnies usually aren't a bad first pet, but just be cautioned that they are work. I LOVE the work as the soft cute lil face is enough for me! Love my white and gray Harlequin! Also keep in mind, I have a 5 pd yorkie and my dog is waaaaaay less distructive, messy and behaved vs our bunny... but bunnies don't require a lot of exercise. Just tlc with their owner and a place to eat/poop! :P Kinda up to you as there are pros and cons to every animal. But HEY, I'm a bunny and dog person. Get them both lol (Either is a great first pet). Also I have never owned a bird although from my friend, she says they can be noisy. Finches are a good first bird though as they aren't very loud and they aren't a huge commitment! Hope this helps!

Interesting vlog. BunBun, is extremely attached to me. I rescued her from the time she was a newborn and she's now 6 years young. She follows me everywhere and actually cries out when I don't pick her up to snuggle. She loves messages and nudges me for more as soon as I stop, hops under the covers with me, and falls asleep with her head resting under my chin! 🐰🐇

My rabbit hates vegetables, he doesn't eat hay and he hates hopping around in the grass. So he's a house rabbit. He also just tends to stay in a corner and groom himself .. He used to bi it around the house and follow me, but he's different now. I should've gotten him neutered. :/ I have a lion head rabbit. I'm planning on getting a mini lop. He's also not potty trained. When he was younger he only used the corner of the kitchen as his toilet, now he uses every part of the house. He also has dental problems so we have to take him to the vet every 4 weeks. Seeing this vid makes me one to get a lop one now! On the up side, my rabbit's never tried chewing on anything around the house. His only interest is laying around the house and grooming himself. T___T

Wow this video changed my mindset of getting a rabbit. I was begging my mum before watching this video for a rabbit, but not anymore since it's time-consuming and you have to be watching and taking care of this animal 24/7 in case it doesn't get ill or depressed.

I would be out and about searching for rabbits. I love rabbits to bits but my backyard is really small with no grass so idk what to do. And keeping a rabbit inside takes lots of responsibility since it's messy, but i could potty train it.. ugh i dont know

Oh, I see what you are saying, I think. Of they are contained in a proper shed or hutch, you would not have to supervise them, but yes, leaving them out in the open, outdoors would be potentially dangerous for them.

Actually, none of those cons are actually cons. They're more like "if's". And IF you're allergic to hay, there are ways to deal with it. Wear gloves when handling it and wear a mask to avoid breathing hay dust. I mean, if that's a con, how much of a nightMARE must a horse be (no pun intended)? Bunnies habits of eating wires and all that is easily solved by properly preparing a Bunny-safe room and give them a proper diet. My Bun never eats anything he shouldn't. The Bunny I had before him (female) ate wires and very rarely the edge of a rug. I have yet to find an actual con about my Buns. Messy, yes. But dry messes that are solved in 30 seconds with a Dirt Devil. I love Bunnies so much, I like to make them happy by cleaning up after them. Only takes a half minute to scoop their wet bedding and replace it. Really really simple! It's funny that you said "you shouldn't yell at them" because the Bunny I have now is stone deaf. He's a Lop, just like your moustache Bunny. He doesn't scare at all, even on the 4th of July or New Years. Can't hear a thing. He LOVES to be held in my arms (you should be in a chair if holding a bun). More "pro's" are: 1) They don't make noise! No barking, etc. 2) You don't need to take them for a walk. They exercise themselves. 3) No walks means no cleaning up the sidewalk or neighbors lawn. 4) All they want is snuggles and a treat afterward and they're happy. 5) Their poop is DRY AND ODORLESS! Too many more Pro's to list here! There's only one "pro" you really should know, and that is that Bunnies are God's most perfect creation. For proof, hang out with one for 10 minutes. Also, pet their faces! They LOVE it! From their li'l lippies all the way back to the tips of the ears. They like to have firm face pettings! Most buns, anyway.

+aaardvarkkk Both my rabbits hear well and one of them doesn't even give a crap about the vacuum, let alone 4th of July! We love the hay smell. But if my allergic friends come over I have to really get in all the corners with the dirt devil. The only con we have is that our two bunnies can't be in the same room together despite our best efforts, so we have a divided household and they both hate to be picked up. HATE WITH A VENGEANCE. Whenever I'm around dogs I think about how much I love our rabbits. Quiet, sweet, and adorable. So much personality and intelligence. Another pro - their poo makes PERFECT compost fertilizer! It's the best manure you can get. We use Good Mews litter so everything we clean out goes straight into the bin and/or to the list of people who love taking the manure off our hands. Vegan pets are also more environmentally friendly. :)

You forgot in the video they are nocturnal and loud as hell. Not a pet whose cage you want near your bedroom if you value your sleep for work or school. As much as I loved my precious little willow, I spent every night winging shoes at her cage and cussing when I was a teen. I couldn't move her cage as Mom and I lived in a tiny apartment. Luckily I leash trained her so she could exercise in the park.

The #1 con of a bunny is urine odor. It is extremely strong! Left that part out. I would be upstairs and could smell urine as soon as our bunny began it was soooo strong. #2 is the chewing of base boards (you mentioned but it should be higher in list for ppl in nice homes). As for pooping they will go in a litter box with no problem. We didn't even train ours but he would go to litter box every time. He never urinated on our carpet though. Always in his cage or litter box. But the odor was horrible.

I’d never had rabbits before either. But I had nine in a city apartment and adored them. They will follow you. To stop them from doing things I trained my rabbits by loud claps and saying no, but gradually showing them if they came to a spot near me they’d be cuddled right after the shout and clapping with being petted and picked up and loved. My rabbits would pull themselves together just before being picked up and wait in joy for that attention. Each rabbit was different, but none feared me or being picked up. I kept four to six at a time in their own cages left open so they could be together or separate as they wished. Any pet care is like being a parent for a first time, no matter how many books or research you do, the best learning you gain is simply by having them and loving them. There is one disease bunnies can get that kills them almost in less than 24 hours. Getting Bayatril (spelling may be wrong) to keep on hand that is prescribed by your vet for their size and weight. Use a deep cat litter tray with a grill over top they’ll learn that is a good place to use as their bathroom. I let my rabbits have a few litters of baby bunnies that I found good homes for and this seemed to help them trust me more over time. I also had a brother who owned a pet shop then who took some bunnies too for customers. You are correct, bunnies take a lot more effort to keep their space clean, but they are so loving and dear. Mine followed me around licking my bare toes till I picked them up cuddled them and took them to the kitchen for organic carrots with green tops still on. They adore dry oatmeal, it’s their chocolate over their pellet food. Apples are appealing treats too, citrus repels them from things you don’t want them to touch. Bunnybytes.com is a good website for rabbit food and toys besides your local supplier. I used them all the years I had my bunnies. Now I have birds in a room that have free flight in their room space. They have their windows and their own tall branched tree to land on. Birds are far more work than rabbits to keep their area clean and they need regular vet care. I have finches and parakeets now who have also gradually learned to trust me when I’m in their space writing daily for work. Enjoy your bunnies. I know you have many great days ahead with them.

Getting Bayatril (spelling may be wrong) to keep on hand that is prescribed by your vet for their size and weight will save their life until they see a vet. Kids and pets often get sick in the night or on holidays, so preparation ahead is vital when you love them. The symptoms are varied, but just knowing each rabbit personality well and watching for their “sudden change” in personality in many cases to “more quiet and far less active” is a common beginning that can kill them in just hours. “No interest in favorite foods” is another sign.

One more thing: I got my dutch yesterday, so any questions about that particular breed can be answered, but might be a bit hard right now. I'd honestly suggest a dutch for anyone looking to get a rabbit, because most love affection and cuddles. They're also not too big, but not too small. I love mine so much

Part 2 of 7 My rabbits would draw in their paws close to their bodies making themselves into a ball before staying still while waiting to be picked up anticipating only more attention they loved to get and treats. They’d hop toward me with their ears perked up excitement in their eyes, particularly my favorites for playtime together. Some bunnies do have more fear depending on what happened to them before I got them. I had one I named “Spike Jones” who I bought from a pet store that had such fear when we met in the Store the staff felt he was not adoptable. When they saw how the temperamental rabbet acted as I held him that he felt safe in my care they were relieved. I could hold him without being scratched or bitten and eventually he grew to trust me too over time.

I own 2 bunnies, my dad thought our newest bunny was going to be normal, but... NOPE he's completely crazy! My bunnies are male and female, they're both neteured. Also, my first of the 2 I have is named Tinker and she's an English Spot. And my newest, Stu, (it was originally spelt Stew) is an English Spot and French Lop mix. Both of them are bonded and I love them!

Part 1of 7 I’d never had rabbits before either. But I had nine in a city apartment and adored them. They will follow you. To stop them from doing things I trained my rabbits by loud claps and saying no, but gradually showing them if they came to a spot near me they’d be cuddled right after the shout and clapping with being petted and picked up and loved.

My bunny never chews on electrical wires/furniture/anything that is not meant for chewing and we keep her freely in our living room the entire day. She just sleeps under an armchair or sofa mostly and sometimes runs around a bit. She also jumps to her cage when she wants to eat/pee. At night I keep her in my room in the cage though. But yeah, she is never chewing anything but still poops a lot, so I vacuum often hehe.

For a long time my bunny lived with me at my dads house in his backyard, and one day she got out through a gate that wasn’t secure, out of two. Cuz the second gate isn’t secure enough(and the first gate is actually completely unhinged from the bricks, but it still functions as a secure gate). And she had gotten out of the yard for the first time, so I was really worried, cuz I live in Arizona, and there’s just loads of sky predators as well as ground. And lots of cats, that could potentially hurt her. And so I asked my best friend to come down with her car and scope around the neighborhood, and she was hanging out right across the street in my neighbors yard. Now, I know better than to chase her down. I approach as I normally do when I have to put her back in her little space. I just walk up with bold steps, and make sure she is aware that I am approaching, and I don’t chase her, I just follow her around if she avoids me. Until she lets me get close enough to pet her, and assure he that I’m not attempting to hurt her. And then I just gently press one hand on her back, and use my other hand to kind of slowly scoop her up. And I know she doesn’t like being picked up, but I can’t have her wondering around doing what ever she wants all the time, so we both have this mutual understanding that it’s kind of chore. But while I was in the process, trying to approach her from the street, my friend just runs up to her and starts chasing her down, until she fled into a neighbors back yard. And well, that was the first time she was ever chased down, I was really upset with her. Cuz she has owned a number of bunnies of her own, that would still be around today if her parents were just a little more considerate. And like, here she is doing one of number one things that could potentially kill my bunny. Cuz my last bunny that was chased down, she ran right into a wall, and most likely died of a really bad concussion. And again, she had never been chased down before. It still haunts me imagining the kind of horror my poor little Dash had gone through. And ya, my friends mom was there when it happened. And thought my bunny was ok, cuz she didn’t know she was severely hurt until a few hours later. It was a dreadful day, when I came back to check on her. I didn’t think I would own a bunny again, cuz I just didn’t have a lot of control over my life, let a lone a secondary one. And well, when I got my new bunny Horchata, she was found in a parking lot, by a boy who knows my best friend. Just a fluffy, little, lop eared ice-cream scoop, that fit perfectly in my two hands. And she was originally given to my best friend to take care of, cuz he knew her as a “bunny professional”, and so thought she would be an appropriate care taker. Which I think she would be if she wasn’t dealing with her parents....uncooperative nature, per say. I was with her, to pick up this small bunny, and I didn’t have anything secure to keep a baby bunny, so I let her keep it for the night. And I don’t really know of any bunny rescues in Arizona, or anyone else besides myself with a peacefull enough home life to keep an animal like a bunny. So I took her in, as soon as I could afford a few things the following day, by combining our weekly allowance for lunch, to buy some bunny supplies. So now I have a sweet, spunky, Dutch lop ear, escape artist named Horchata, who finally lives safely with me in my own peaceful home with my boyfriend. ❤️💕🤟🏻 Before I took her to my new house. Just last night. She had been living as a free range bunny on my dads street. Cuz a lot of people visit my dad, that have kids, who don’t know how to properly secure the gate in our backyard. And so she has gotten out quite a bit. First couple times, I was still living with my dad, flabbergasted, cuz I just couldn’t figure out how she got out, until I found out that someone was neglecting to put the side gate up, when they take the trash out. So for a while I was going out and retrieving her from the neighbors yard, almost every few days. And then I moved out with my boyfriend expecting to take Horchata with me. We moved into a house with two other room mates, about 4rooms and lots of space in the living rooms. And there were two Persian pigeons, who were new residents along with my boyfriend and I, and two huskies that were finally taken back from an abusive girlfriend. And I adored the pigeons. One was all white, and the other one was grayish brown. With cool feathers collard around their ankles. The white one was more skittish, and the brown one....had something wrong with him. It was kind of unsettling actually, but he still had personality. they were originally owned by an abusive little girl( that was related to the head of the house hold) so they were pretty much traumatized them and it was pretty much their first time in a quiet, safe place. First week went smoothly with the pigeons, we let them roam around the living room space, and the brown one liked chilling on my shoulder. But one day, while everyone was gone, two of the room mates came back home, and saw blood, feathers and a dead bird, and trash everywhere, along with two huskies that got out of the fenced area. Checked the footage on the security cameras, and turned out that the girl husky is maternal to a flaw. The bigger husky knocked the cage over, and the white one got out, to which the mama husky “came to the rescue” to try and baby it, by picking it with by the head with her moth. It panicked so much that it died in the process. It was no only sad that a pigeon died, but now the there was alone, and acting a lot wierder cuz of the tragedy that happened to his only social life. So this pigeon was kept in a different room, and a different cage for the next week. My boyfriend and I had to leave for a business trip out of town, and saw that the pigeon was put back in the original cage. I tried feeding him the seeds from my bread before we left cuz he was pecking a food dish with no food. But when I put the little seeds in, he was still pecking the dish but not actually picking up any food. Which honestly, just worried me even more. While we were gone, we got this update in our group chat with all our room mates, who said that the other pigeon died. Because of the huskies. Again. And on the footage, the guys said that there was no sign of how the pigeon got out of the cage, and it’s assumed that it was pulled through the bars of the cage by its legs or wings or something. Cuz there were prices of the bird that were torn off, The larger husky is a boy, and he is a dick. He is the pack leader when there are other huskies, and he would be the one of the two huskies to be outwardly violent, and he is the dog that is part of the training process for other huskies, and he is the biggest, and meanest. cuz the head of the house hold is the president of a husky rescued foundation in Arizona. Which I give him props, but he doesn’t really.... he’s not exactly....An ideal president. So the number of huskies in our house hold fluctuates between 2-15. And we get a couple other stray dogs every now. There is actually two chihuahuas that wondered into the back yard. Actually 3. And we have an enormous back yard. I believe it’s a full acre. It has three houses on it, one of which my boyfriend and I live together in now, away from our previous environment. And I didn’t take my bunny to the first house I lived in, even though I was so eager to rescue her from her endangering living conditions at my dads house. Because the huskies would not be able to not kill her. Their care taker, does a good job at training them to be submissive to people, and other dogs. But they are not trained in many other areas. And he tells me that huskies are a less domestic breed, but I think he just tells himself that in regards to his lack of effort to really train them properly. And the alpha husky, he is supposed to be the most well-trained, but he is still VERY problematic. He goes through very extreme means to get through the room divider, and get into the trash can , or invade any food left on the counter. And is the most aggressive one. Even bit a child a month ago. And one time he got into a 10 pack of raw chicken that was thawing out, and I was the only person home, and he wouldn’t let me get close to him, was threatening to bite me, and I was really scared, cuz I’m still relatively small compared to this big dog, that doesn’t obey anyone else but the head of the house. And this one time, my boyfriend and I were in the back yard playing with the huskies, and one of them went to the very end of the backyard, and I was trying to scope out what she was sniffing. It looked like a stuffed animal that was blown in from the recent storm. But then I realized it was probably a real animal. And I was barefoot, but I checked anyways. And it tuned out to be a relatively young dead cat. And that was the third animal those dogs killed since I moved in, and I was just. I was so....distraught. Like a gang of 5 huskies killed this poor cat that revealed to have bled to death. Short story long, I was far from willing to bring my precious little Horchata into a house of dangerous dogs, that would probably go to far lengths to try and kill her.
