My journey to orthodoxy began 27 years ago. It has been a long process, out of Protestantism and a deep sense of dissatisfaction with what many churches are offering today. I longed for a place of worship where God was worshipped in reverence and awe, for His own sake, not with a cup of coffee in one hand and your feet up on the altar rail. Where Jesus Christ is truly Lord such that His life truly impacts my life. Having sifted through many of my own arguments I conclude that the little Orthodox Church 6 miles from me (there are very, very few here in England - so I am blessed) is where I can at last rest my hungry spirit and bow my head in worship of Jesus Christ with a sense of wonder, joy, reality and mystery. The orthodox faithful who meet there come mainly from Greece and Eastern Europe but, thanks be to God, also my own English countrymen. One thing I notice, though, that might be an issue - it sometimes looks as if it is orthodoxy itself that is worshipped, rather than Christ Himself! So much chat about “orthodox this” and “orthodox that” - a focus upon orthodoxy rather than (as it appears to me) Christ Himself and living for Him. I may be entirely wrong. I hope I am. But it is a danger. Finally I should add what an intense blessing it is for me to have such a godly monk as our priest who has a wonderful spiritual heritage. I am a retired Protestant pastor myself but coming to orthodoxy showed me how little I really knew and how patient God has been with me all this time! Glory to God for all things!

Dear Mark, I thank the Lord that out Church is growing and that it can heal the souls of all people everywhere in the world. Your observation is not necessarily untrue, but perhaps it is not the whole truth. Forgive me if I am trespassing but I would like to offer my view on this. The reason you might be hearing a lot of rhetoric in that way is because, we Orthodox, have been fighting for our faith against heresy since day one of the Church. We do know that Holy Tradition (as in the faith that is being passed from one generation to the next and the living Church) is what keeps the Church alive and vice versa. The Scriptures, its interpretations, the mysteries (sacraments...) are all tied in one. Obviously, it would be idolatry to worship the typos (canon / formalities / rituals) rather than God, but for the one who lives Orthodoxy, the typos is what contains the ousia (essence). That is, it is what permits to live next to God, and maintain pure the feeling of spirituality you and I and all Orthodox Christians have been blessed with to experience. In conclusion I would just say: try to excuse your brothers who might not know the best way to express their conscience, and remember that we are all struggling in this world. Amen and peace be with you.

To what Poem I dont know, it brings you back to tradition and it does create a dialog with the past, but it's not a dialog in which you can say well maybe in this specific situation it doesn't apply, unless that's an opinion of the church at the higher level. There is both beauty and hardship, but SOMETIMES the opposition of change even in some minor aspects is much more based on the authority of tradition than the actual intelectual arguing of people.

Quran says Allah is “Al-Ahad”(one/indivisible).Deductively, It is impossible for perfection to have parts. I have read both the old testament and new testament and textually they scream oneness of Allah. So, then why believe in trinity and associate two imaginary parts to Allah(one/indivisible/self-sufficient/all-loving)?
@frankherbert6476
@frankherbert6476 Жыл бұрын
@@MorallyResponsible A few things to think on....1st, Orthodox see viewing faith apophatically, or negatively. This means we understand God through His revelation to us. We don't use our intellect to come up with new ideas, turning the faith into a legalistic if/then philosophy, where doctrine can develop and change over time. It also means that in this revelation is in fact communion, participation. Genesis..."Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness"...Our, not My. " Then it say "He saw..." contradiction? Earlier it mentioned "The Spirit of the Lord moved over.." Jewish theologians well before the time of Christ, saw this as a part of God, not an action of a different entity such as an Angel. When you see a tree, you see singular, but you also see a myriad of branches and leaves, and roots connecting it to the Earth. It is still one tree. But it is also many. In the furnace with the youths, we see the pre-incarnate Christ dancing. The same pre-incarnate that walked with Adam. But, like the tree example, not separate, but serving purpose. The question of Trinity is "why?" It is one that my good protestants (and even Roman Catholics ) can't define, because they look at it from ideas and intellect. It is about communion, synergistic participation in the Divine Nature. We see Isiaih in Ch 6 participate. We see Moses participate. In this Communion, this illumination, participation, is so much so, the Light of God physically shines in him so that he must wear a veil. He participates by Grace what Christ on Mt Tabor does by Nature. This is why to Orthodox the Holy Mysteries of Baptism, Eucharist etc are tangible, organic and important ways that God communicates His grace to us. THis is a love story, where we don't use just intellectual reliance. We "Taste and see the Lord is good." Why does God also take on a human nature? "What is not assumed is not healed." It's not about "getting to paradise"-a place where we play in God's yard. It is relational, like marriage. I learn more about a relationship the more I participate. God does not stay distant. And why? Death. It must be destroyed. This is why Adam was cast out of the Garden. He couldn't stay in Eternity with a sinful nature. Death, like the Great Flood, is/was a purifying event. Then what? We see in 1 Peter 3 and 4 that He died in the Body, living in the Spirit descended into Hades on a rescue mission. He loves everyone. He "snuck" into hades through his human death-God can't die) in order to smash the gates "Lift up your gates, so the King of Glory may enter in!" Our iconography shows a victorious Christ pulling Adam and Eve out of Hades with everyone who recognizes Him following. the devil is embittered, tied with his own fetters. What does this all mean to you? The Quron came about hundreds of years after the New Testament, after the Gospels. I would measure the Quron off the Gospels, not the other way around. THe Quron came about hundreds of years after the first disciples of the Apostles wrote about the Christian faith. I suggest reading Polycarp, Ignatius of Antioch, Clement. These were direct disciples of Peter, Paul, and John who were all directly taught by Christ. Read Athanasius "On the Incarnation." This was written before the Quron. Read Basil the Great "On the Holy Spirit" to understand the Trinity. This was before the QUron. Read Irenaeus of Lyon's "On Heresies". He was one generation removed from Paul and John. WHy would we not trust those who were either in direct contact with Jesus, or one generation removed vs one writing 600 years later? If you say "Well, Allah revealed it and so it is true and everything before it is false." Well, the Mormons say the same thing about Joesph Smith and the book of Mormon. Why aren't they correct? The Quron says Jesus will return to judge. But only God can judge.

I was Chrismated into the Orthodox church this year on August 6th. I will be 55 in October. I came from a family that was raised nominal Roman Catholic in Central America (Costa Rica) , when we came to the US my parents encountered the Protestant / Pentecostal community of faith. I went on to pastor a Free Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Finding myself on the path of the ancient faith has been transcendent and truly a wonderful part of the whole journey. The more I learn to surrender my will to God's will, the more HE illuminates my nous and the less reliant I've become to lean on my own understanding - in all my ways I will to acknowledge HIM so HE can direct my path, make the path straight and remove any obstacle. I have learned how much I don't know. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I can confess a peace that transcends all understanding. Thank you for sharing this video. If I can offer two virtues worth pursuing that I believe have made this journey so fulfilling for me personally, they would be: Honesty and Humility...

I have been searching for the Faith that was right for two decades, but being an American and raised by evangelicals in a protestant country, Orthodoxy was completely foreign to me. I knew they had icons, and to me that smacked of idolatry…. Until one of the several excellent Orthodox KZbin channels used the illustration of having a picture of your family or a flag on a flagpole. We don’t worship the pictures of our family, and we don’t worship the flag; the Orthodox don’t worship icons or the Theotokos, either. They bring what they illustrate to the temporal space, typically worship and prayer spaces. Saints, including the Holy Mother of God, are revered as heros and friends that are already in the presence of Christ, if I’m not mistaken in that metaphor. Asking them to pray for us is no different in concept than asking the minister at the local megachurch to pray for you. The difference is that the saints are wonderful examples of Christian life, the folks at the local mega church…. maybe not. I am deeply interested in converting to EO, and am talking with my wife about her and our two young children pursuing this path as a family.

I too am in the process of my Catechumen phase in the Orthodox Church. After coming home here, and through all my studies with the Orthodox Church, Jesus Christ teachings and understanding them better, the Desert Fathers, and their wisdom, there is no turning back to any other church again. There is nowhere else I would rather be.This is the real church God meant for us to BE. Orthodoxy is a way of life and that way of life is following Jesus and doing what he instructs us to do, taking his teachings seriously in our lives in a way that is gentle but so real that the Holy Spirit shows you the truth that you cannot denye. We all live with some great sorrows in our lives, but It is good to know, that we are all in this together , and we don't have to journey alone. We can have Jesus in the boat with us always, as long as we invite him in and trust and believe him and the scriptures, and along side the church.

The music (especially Valaam and Cappella Romana) is what drew me first toward Orthodoxy, and has become my soundtrack for years before I ever set foot in an Orthodox church starting this past Palm Sunday. I had heard the Valaam chant you are now using as a theme countless times but never thought to ask what it was, but then at Pascha I was thrilled to hear the very same hymn in the church, "Christ Is Risen"! Blessings on your explanations Jonathan! I think the “miraculous reason” for which this centrality and depth have been preserved in the Church is the Holy Spirit side of Trinity. We have never evicted It from our theology therefore the ancient understanding has been kept intact, through a lot more hardships and oppositions. I think a small thing like Filioque has been very impactful on the shattering and misguidance of western forms of Christianity, which have led to the downspiraling world Jonathan is talking about. I say this with love, bless you all ❤☦️😇

What many, if not most, American Protestants (myself included) end up needing to work through, is the view-even if unintentional-that Orthodoxy is simply a highly refined version of their Western denominational faith/belief, where all the "bad" stuff, things they disagree with, angry about, etc, are cleansed, leaving a distilled version of an expected version of Christianity they already have. What we need to realize-come to terms with-is that Western Christianity is a type of religious philosophy more than a lived experience of revealed Truth. I was told that it would take 10 years to become Orthodox. I was quite put off by this. Now I'm thinking it was too generous. The amount of de-programming that has to occur within the life of the faith, where "participation" takes on a whole new dimension, is quite substantial.

-The Gospel of Jesus was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. -The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. - It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them Friday 13th.

I really want to respect you Jonathan, but it is hard when it feels like concrete subjects like "What do we believe" are approached with such vague non-descript language. I get that you want to be approachable, but having something I can sink my teeth into would be really nice. SO here's my interpretation of the Orthodox church from the description given and what I can piece together. It seems like the Orthodox church attempts to resurrect the systematic approach that the Pharisee's had created. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, if the goal is to help people grow closer to God by giving them a disciplined step by step process, the error though comes in quickly when that process is then argued as the "correct" or "only" or "orthodox" way of approaching a relationship with God.
@melonyrobinson9944

Well, it's more step by step than many Protestant churches, and while I would say it's a process, it's not like a checklist. It is a process of forming a relationship with God. And while we wouldn't say it's the only way to form a relationship with God, it is the "correct" way, as in the way Jesus told us to do so. It's like, you might be able to cure a disease with an untested drug that you bought from a stranger, but it's a better idea to use the medicine that a doctor prescribes you and to follow their instruction. God reaches out to all, but we also have to come to him and accept his will and way of doing things over our own

Orthodox understanding of salvation is deeper than "get outta hell card". St Athanasius (On The Incarnation) summarized it as "Christ became man so that man could become god (by His Grace)" Meaning that our path is an eternal one growing ever closer to the likeness of God. I was born into orthodoxy but i never understood the teachings through the singing of the priest. Also, it made me feel that i m not even close to being...adequate in God s eyes. Most of the priests who taught us religion in school seemed rigid and quick to point toour mistakes, the shoulds and shouldn ts in a way that made me feel a lost cause. Everything godly felt so inaccessible that it became undesirable to me at one point. I never quite got the praying to Mary and the saints and the opulence in the church and the preist s garments in holy days felt...inadequate. All these things made me turn my back on the church in rebellion and defeat and I put God on hold since I couldn t figure things out. I was young when this happened. Fast forward about 10 years, i fell in love with a man who is baptist. I clearly remember how his narative went about "Actually, if you think about it, orthodoxy and baptism are about the same. We re not that different". "Sure, and that s exactly why i m supposed to get baptised in order to qualify to become your wife!", i used to answer, irritated. But i did it anyway. People just don t understand that the danger of atheism and that of Islam are iminent and that religious virtue signalling only creates divides quickly perceived and exploited by the enemy islam... I live surrounded by Muslims and I can tell you that their religion is literally part of their identity, they are taught apologetics and polemics from a young age and they have a clear advantage in converting people just by virtue of their passion (I had to spend 6 months to study Islam to arm myself against their dawah). Even as an adult I still can t get to the bottom of things in Christianity, it s so, so divided! I m not into running to what feels familiar, I need to reason my way to the truth. Do not be put off, it depends on the community of that specific Church. There's a reason you are pulled to the Orthodox Church, put your faith in Christ and try to push past the anxiety, it might just be a temptation to let it all fall down. Stay strong. Give your anxiety to Christ, pray, tell Him that you need His help with your anxiety, that you're passing it over to Him, and that you need His guidance and stick to the commitment. Do not be deceived: you will be disappointed by what you find in any Orthodox church, at least initially, or if not, somewhere along the journey. Rather fast is the experience of most (and mine). It may be that your disappointments are legitimate. Try to always see past that. The Orthodox Church is made of people, of no lesser sinfulness than any other folk. In this world there's an infinte amount of obstacles for anything, we however have the capacity to power through, and in matters concerning God, He has the power to reshape the very way the puzzle pieces fit together so that you end up where you are supposed to.

Maybe you have found an "old rite" one. Usually those consider themselves to be authentic and the others to be heretics. It's all due to a childish misunderstanding regarding the chalendar. They believe that the new chalendar (Gregorian one) is "wrong" because it was "done by a pope". 🙄 But the pope didn't make the chalendar, obviously. He didn't even calculated it. And chalendar is not dogma, it's just an instrument to measure time. If someone i in error, those are the old rite people because at some point, they risk celebrating Pascha at the wrong date. Pascha date is calculated according to certain criteria. And for that, you need an up to date chalendar, logically. While is no problem with Christmas or other saint dates, when it comes to Pascha and the celebrations that are related to it, things are a bit tricky in regards to old rite people. As a rule, ask them when they celebrate Christmas and Saint Mary's Dormition and what date is today. If they give you other dates than the normal ones, you know who they are.

It’s like the world forgets Protestantism still teaches theosis. We just call it something else and place an emphasis on Christs atonement as being a gift received via faith, and not to be confused with doing anything to earn it. The end goal of my faith as a Protestant is to become conformed to the image of Christ and begin to live more and more out of this identity which is harmonious to everything taught in scripture - something of a transformation that happens inside we express externally vs something we go thru the deeds and motions of on the outside. A process of sanctification led by the Holy Spirit which we cooperate with in surrender that will most likely take the rest of my life until I’m with the Lord. But I think it’s very important to have faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross so when we do make a mistake or fall into temptation we aren’t fooled by the devil into running in circles trying to fix it and fall into scrupulosity or OCD. We repent, confess, pray and move on and shore up what we need to shore up instead of our tendency to spiral and doubt our salvation. I think we just like to hammer that home, but it in no way stops at accepting Christ and repenting and believing the gospel. That’s just the staring line but we have faith He will finish what he started in us, and that what he did is atonement for our mistakes enough, which I cannot add or take away from thru my faithfulness nor my folly. ❤

This is not the charitable way to put it, but: It's like all those Jerusalem Judaizers got together with former Pharisees and formed a church, were tempted by their bents to "tie up heavy loads" for the people, and started looking for every opportunity to remove the crowns from people who truly love and serve Jesus. Those who "find their church home" in this expression of Christianity seem to be finding what all who are looking for a way to pay their own way find. There really seems no scandal of grace in this expression.

Well, I have been a Protestant for almost all my life. Every point you made, I have been taught or found in my journey of faith. I am beginning to think the Orthodox church may have better guidance to help people (some or most) on that journey, but the journey is much the same. In my church, though sermons and classes/ bible studies, it is up to individual to really study Bible. The type relationship one has with God has much to do with what the person is willing put forth. We have to live in the world, without becoming part of the world. When people are young they get caught up in work, marriage, family and spend little time with God. Then they drift into being part of world, and want to pick and choose what scriptures they read and want to believe. We have to come back, stay strong in God and follow Holy Spirit guidance. It is work, but well worth it. I personally do not find symbols, paintings, icons ...helpful particularly . I find many cathedrals, Roman Catholic or Orthodox, way too excessive, and unnecessary (I've been to Germany and Israel and seen many).

Is a cathedral strictly necessary? No. But it puts on full display the beauty of artistic expression. We’re meant to image God, the ultimate creator and lover of beauty. I don’t see why it’s a bad thing that we’ve found a way to do the same on a much smaller scale in an attempt to honor him.

@@Beta-XYZ the question synthetic was strange. However, if you mean what I learned from my youth about God and Jesus; I would say its adequate, but not thorough. It is much easier now to get information if one has questions. I have made great progress in my understanding of some complex ideas.

Disillusion is what keeps me from finally joining a church. I want to be baptised and have a church but i get scared in a way, afraid ill be disappointed. Im working on it.

@justinw947……disillusion comes with life. Think of how many times you may have been disappointed in yourself and you begin to understand that we are all disappointing at various times in our lives. We are growing in our faithfulness and pursuit of Christ…..He never disappoints! Visit an Orthodox Church and attend several Liturgies….speak with an Orthodox priest and tell him about your fears. May the Holy Trinity help you on your spiritual journey and may you see your way into the Holy Orthodox Church! ❤️☦️

Simply put we must live the life of the church which is the only way to the Head, Christ. Historically individuals did not connect themselves to Chris by themselves. 99.9 per cent always came through the church. They were not self approved, they were approved by the body of Christ. That is until the rationalistic humanistic Renaissance which developed extreme individualism.

Many people who are protestant are very devoted Christian people. The see the satanic corruption of the RCC and know that's not the way. Orthodoxy is not well known in the Western World and America.

Glory to God! The most important thing is to find a parish near you that you feel comfortable with, meet with the priest, and go to as many services as possible. You can use this website to find Orthodox parishes -> orthodoxyinamerica.org/

I left evangelical Protestantism, deconstructed, still deeply spiritual. I feel such freedom now in Christ and admire the orthodox tradition, thought about becoming orthodox because they’re theology helped me the most to deconstruct, but to be bound by strict rules of conduct seem like another trap at this point.
