I now average about 1.8g per kg of protein and dont have much trouble getting it but about 45g a day is from a vegan protein shake so that helps. This over 65 year olds weren’t only starting to eat more protein at age 60 either. That’s important to note. I train like a professional athlete and I don’t recover properly if I don’t have at least 2 gram protein per kg weight. If my knee hurts and is inflamed I will drink another protein shake before bed to help my body recover on top of my usual protein consumption and it makes a big difference to how my knee is the next morning. It also seems to aid my sleep too. I can wake up in the night hungry and Greek yoghurt gets me back to sleep whereas other macros, carbs do not have the same effect
@blueseptember2174 Жыл бұрын

Makes sense ... you want the body to cool down and relax, so any carbs would just spike blood sugar and have you toss and turn. I bet fats could work too, like macademia nuts, if one has problems digesting proteins in your sleep. I would personally not eat 3 hrs before bedtime cause that is what works for me for best sleep. I read that taking a large dose of magnesium, (500mg men / 350-400 women) two hours before bedtime also helps a lot with sleep and eliminates cramps if one has those.

As Simon Hill rests his hat on apob for reasons to not eat red meat and knowing your bloodwork to see how red meat effects that, you should likewise get bloodwork to see how a vegan diet/plant diet effects bio markers of gut inflammation/gluten sensitivities/homocysteine/crp/ oxalates. Genetics and lifestyle plays a big role on what foods you will thrive on based on physiological needs and food sensitivities.
@MsSweetlandofliberty Жыл бұрын
The Blood Type diet, long out of fashion now, stated that types O and B should eat primarily red meat for protein, while A and AB types do better with plant proteins and light meats like chicken and fish. There are specific variations for each type, and rationale given as to why, but the bottom line is that my husband (O) and I (B) have found the general macronutrients, and specifically the protein piece, after years of practice, to be of value. My A and AB friends have found they did better with beans and light meats. Just some anecdotal information that might be helpful and possibly explain why some people thrive on plant protein and others don’t and need meat protein.

I'd argue that strength and muscle mass are correlated when accounting for longevity, that strength is fast twitch muscle, and fast twitch muscle is directly connected to muscle size. Sarcopenia represents a loss of fasttwitch muscle and subsequently muscle size.

Simon has a great point, that if you consume significantly higher than RDA, 0.8g/kg, and eat a varied plantbased diet (and you are aware of shortcomings on certain protein sources), that you are more likely to get sufficient amounts of EAA's. However, many vegans underconsume protein, based on a vegan dogma, that protein requirements are overestimated. That RDA is "you can have up to 0.8g/kg". That you are "allowed" up to 0.8g. One cannot deny, that Simon looks WAY healthier than Mic The Vegan or Dr. Greger.

Quality of protein matters. Plant based protein macros are dramatically overstated per protein nutrition expert Don Layman, PhD, who has spent researching and studying protein for decades. Vegans/vegetarians are being duped by the big agri machine into believing the protein macros published are treated metabolically after ingestion the same way as animal based proteins; they are not and research has proven this. I grew up on a farm, back in the 50s, 60, 70s. My grandparents ate all those things too, but still meat based. I can look back now, see all their health issues, arthritis, heart disease, were because of the grains and veggies they ate. My grandfather lived to 69 (heart attack), my grandmother 82. I surely would not say her life was wonderful, as she suffered with arthritis. Guaranteed from the grains and dairy. How long one lives does not align with how good their life was. Back then we had no idea of oxalates, which grains and many veggies are high. Oxalates are connected to all kinds of joint issues, as well as studies with heart disease and cancers.

@@Berrypancakes229 The high oxalate foods....ALL grains (even gluten-free), nuts (almond flour is NOT good), nut milks are even higher because they are concentrated oxalates, most seeds, especially soy. I got to thinking today about Simon eating so much soy. He's young, but what happens as he ages and is eating all these high oxalate foods? It will catch up with you sooner or later. Also high oxalate...beets/beet greens, chocolate, potatoes (especially sweet potatoes), celery, carrots (most root vegetables), raspberries, blackberries, strawberries (depending on variety), apricots, Swiss chard, spinach, okra, rhubarb, figs, kiwi, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, curry powder, black pepper (white is okay), turmeric, black and green teas....that's for starters. There are low oxalate foods, which are recommended coming off a high oxalate diet to ease your body in allowing it to get rid of oxalates. Your body stores oxalates it can't get rid of safely, because if there are too much oxalates in your blood, you'd have a heart attack. Hence, you can find studies on oxalates and heart issues. There are also studies on oxalates and cancer, because fibroids in the uterus and breasts are oxalates. There are TONS of interviews on YT with Sally Norton, the oxalate queen. She has changed many lives. Just released her book in January, Toxic Superfoods. I'd highly recommend it. These studies where the participants ate higher or lower "protein," uh, is all protein the same? Plant protein, animal protein, grass-finished, free range, caged, protein powders (organic or filled with all kinds of crap?) ... just "protein" seems completely meaningless. So did the young people eat the same type of protein as the older people? One big difference tween younger and older ones is the older folks are often not working. So they often eat earlier in the day (not after dark), as well as with less stress happening in their lives. Their exercise routine is also less likely to be excessive (maybe only do a daily walk)... So maybe in young people it's not the presumed excess protein, but several imbalances (and maybe one compounding others), including excess stress (hampering proper digestion) and excess exercise and less good sleep... Just so many variables that aren't addressed in most studies.
@blueseptember2174 Жыл бұрын
Old people generally don't sleep well either(they wake alot) and have lots of stress too(health problems, appts, family etc) But they eat earlier because by then digestion is slowed so if they don't eat earlier then reflux, hernias, slow digestion will give them the business.

Concerning the spelling of natto, you have a vowel followed by 2 consonants which makes the vowel short, rather than long if there were only one consonant following,so the correct pronunciation of that word as spelled is natto rather than nato.
@n3tl4g2 ай бұрын
That would be true if "natto" were English or perhaps a word in another European language, but in Japanese the "A" is always the same, sounds like "Ah". The word is transcribed this way to indicate a double consonant sound -- with a brief glottal stop between the first and second T so you can hear the double consonant. Kind of like: naht-to. The T needs also needs to be clear, unlike the soft t in "latter" as they are doing here. That soft t sounds more like a Japanese "r". Japanese pronunciation is very interesting.

Simon Hill is a subscriber to the 7th Day Adventist Theologically based vegan philosophy. Plant proteins are incomplete and do not contain all 8 of the essential amino acids. Beyond that plants have no EPA nor DHA which are the key Omega 3 fatty acids. The plant chompers will say that they get their EPA and DHA from the conversion of ALA. But the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA is precisely 6%.

They also did not have cars. I take it you hunt all your meat and live in the woods while laying 140 pounds. Every time you have to take a poop you find a nice spot behind a tree.

He looks to be thriving, but mycoprotein? Really? Why go through this bizarre ritual? Life is too short not to enjoy the fact we were designed to animal protein.

It can be tough to buy animal protein without contributing to factory farming; another bizarre and unnatural ritual. I'd love to consume meat without causing more animals to be put in those places, but it can be expensive and impractical to find meat from real, good-quality farms.

Hard to believe but some people don't want to be animal abusers and care about the environment and their own longevity. If you eat meat you contribute to violence and ultimately death and are actively destroying our planet. Some people aren't selfish a-holes and know they can thrive and get enough protein without doing such immeasurable harm 🌱🌱🌱

@@davidr2421I agree, I recommend trying to find a local butcher. It’s definitely more expensive but far more humane and something I try to budget for

@@davidr2421 You do realize how many animals are killed with monocrop farming? It's literally killing fields and the pesticides/herbicides poison us daily. Grass fed and finished beef are the way to go.

Regarding APOB, I believe there was a study out that suggested people with lower cholesterol had a higher mortality rate when compared to those with a higher level of cholesterol. There was a point where there were diminishing returns but I want to say that was closer to 300? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21160131/#:~:text=Conclusions%3A%20Low%20cholesterol%20was%20related,a%20risk%20factor%20for%20mortality.
