Your hair looks fantastic Melissa. But it's so funny you should say this because I think the same applies to skin. This used to be my routine. Sunblock daytime. Retin A at night. Suddenly (because everyone else did) I got into serums, Vit C, Niacin, peptides, hyaluronic acid, multi this, multi that, bakuchiol moisturisers, and my skin has never looked worse! So I'm going back to the 'less is more' regime. Bless my heart, I'll be washing with plain soap and water next! Joking apart I was talking to this 90 year old the other day who had skin like a peach. Pears soap she said. That's it!

I have been thinking the same thing. I kinda have this feeling that product development people sit around at a conference table and try to decide which layer they can add to women’s routines next. The more layers I put on my skin, the more it sags. I sometimes wonder if they’re just playing with us. I guess they’re laughing all the way to the bank. Many thanks❤❤❤

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this. I've been trying for 2 years to regrow my hair and make it healthy ...no coloring, bleaching, extensions or hot tools ...only "moisturizing treatments", masks, leave ins, etc. and my bottom half looks like i have bleached it weekly ...any growth id start to see wouldnt matter because i would trim constantly (with multiple hair scissors because i thought maybe i was using bad ones to cause the damage) just to keep repeating this cycle non stop. Im almost in tears with how awful it has become but this is the first day i came across protein overload and I'll tell you what... 80% of my expensive hair care products all have a form of protein. About to go use a clarifying packet i think i have stuffed somewhere and a simple conditioner then a dab of Moroccan Oil (argan oil) to the ends. Praying this works. Your video has confirmed what I anticipated the issue would turn out to be, i appreciate you sharing ! Take care ❤

I agree. My hair does not like Olaplex and the number 3 treatment works like a protein treatment....even though that's not technically what it is. So if you have protein overload the worst thing you can try is that treatment.

It’s a challenge. It really is. It’s like you have to become a scientist now to figure out just basic things and what is in what we’re putting on ourselves. And they just keep adding more and more products they want us to use. I stripped things down on my skin care, and now I’m about to do the same thing with my hair. I'm always experimenting! lol. Oh thank you for the ideas about what to do with the grandkids, Something that was popular was a scavenger hunt around town. But it was places instead of things. Like, "where is the statute of so and so", so they had to find it on their phones and map it out and give the driver dir3ections. You look great and your hair is beautiful! My hair was very fuzzy & frizzy on the ends and looked like cotton candy. I used K18 repair mask and it made a world of difference. It’s kind of expensive so I bought the trial size. It just takes a tiny, tiny little amount and you don’t put it on your roots. I think you’re supposed to use clarifying shampoo, but I used Briogeo balancing shampoo. DO NOT use conditioner or any other product before the K18. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to comb my hair without conditioner, but after I left the K18 on for 4 minutes I combed my hair with no tangles whatsoever. I air dry my hair and I now have waves I haven’t seen in years. I bought the large size of the mask and it’s awesome! You use it after several washes in a row, then just periodically. I was very excited when K18 finally came out with their brand of shampoo. Unfortunately, it dried my hair out really bad. Their shampoo does not work for me at all, but I love the repair mask.

Your hair looks beautiful, Melissa! I am going back to my Nioxin. I haven’t used it for a while and I have been experiencing the same things as you described. We had moved and I thought it was the water in my new location and the humidity, but we have been dry lately and it still continued. A clarifier temporarily helped me. Such a helpful video. Thank you!

I am having good luck again on the Nioxin. And it does seem to help my shedding, too. I sure do appreciate it!

My daughter spent the weekend at our house due to a plumbing problem at her house. She used my shower the first night and told me I was using Shampoo with Wheat Proteins in it, and Formaldehyde. she told me to throw them away (OgX), and buy L'Oreal EverPUre Sulfate Free Shampoo/ Conditioner. So far its working fine.

I've been using Biotin ogx. Shampoo an conditioner., My hair quit breaking off. I don't see those ingredients.

p.s You're right, I see wheat protein. I guess I didn't have to much cause it never felt bad. I have very fine hair.

Your hair looks beautiful! I'm so glad you shared this information because I have the same problem. The hair below my ears just keeps breaking no matter how careful I am. I've spent so much money this past 2 years, looking for something to put the hydration back in to my blond hair but nothing seems to work. I'm going to check my ingredients asap! Thank you Melissa and hope you have a fantastic week! 🍂🧡~Susanne

Thank you, Susanne. It's so frustrating to deal with. And you cut it and it just starts all over again. I am going to really start looking at ingredients, too. It just pays to beware. Love and many thanks!

I figured this out years ago. My hair hates protein. It is very difficult to find products or shampoos/conditioners that don't have it. Would you mind sharing the items you use? I have never used Nioxin but have seen it around. What version do you use of it? Aren't there different ones? I would love to see all the products you have found that don't make the issue worse.....even share the clarifying shampoo you use. I have the ouai detox shampoo but I think it has protein in it. The Amika soulfood mask does not have it....(I think) and I try to use that mask a lot as a conditioner. I'm in Canada and there are so little options. The Kerastase nutritive heat protecting leave in treatment also does not have protein. But the Resistance version does and I have both. I can tell by the second time using something.....protein alert.I can feel that brittle feeling and my hair hates it. Please make another video and share!

Right now I am using the Nioxin System 4 shampoo, conditioner and treatment for my scalp. That's it. It's doing well so far, but I'm just really starting on it, so I haven't been searching for other products yet. I had remembered my hair had never done this all the times I was using Nioxin, so that's why I thought I might have some good luck with it. I have noticed that about some of the kerastase products and I wondered why some of them started making my hair feel brittle. It was a shame because I really like the products. But so far, just the Nioxin and nothing else. I've been cutting to bare bones! lol. Many thanks!

Wow Melissa that was very informative! I had no idea too much protein could damage our hair so glad you made This video📸!. The top looks gorgeous on you, but then everything looks gorgeous on you. Family time is the most important time The only important time I'm sure no one cares if you take a little while to answer the comments we would rather see you happy xoxo Rose ❤️🌹

Love, love that top, it’s adorable. I have a belly,pooch so it might be too snug on me, but I think it’s so cute. You’re hair looks gorgeous curled. I use Olaplex but my hair goes thru dry spells also. I need to try something different and watch the proteins. Thank you for sharing 💕💕💕

Thanks Melissa for this video. I hadn't heard about protein overload 😳 Shoot, I better do that strand test. I've been using a generic version of leave in Sébastien Potion 9 from Sally's. Oh oh, yup, it's got at least 3 of those protein ingredients 😵🤯
@Melissa552 жыл бұрын
If your hair is looking really healthy, you may need that protein. What I was reading is we do need proteins in our hair. It’s just there’s some types that can’t handle too much of it. But I read that not enough can cause some problems with certain hair types. I swear it’s a full-time job trying to keep up with things. Lol. Many thanks.

Greetings Melissa! This is very interesting. I really have to get out my magnifier and see what's in all my volumizers!! When my hair is wet it's like a bird's nest of curls. Very stuck together. The case is afoot! Thank you Melissa! You look absolutely fabulous today, by the way. Love that top and your hair! Love and blessings ♥️🙏

JJ, it's like a detective story with discovering what is in our products! I found protein in my beloved hairspray, and darn if that didn't help when I used it less, too. Love you girl! You take care. And thank you! Love, Melissa

Melissa- my hairdresser has cautioned me in this. I usually only use moisturizing conditioner and only use masks with protein maybe twice per month. It made a HUGE difference.

Awesome video!!! Thank you so much for informing us on this issue. I’ve been having the same problem for the last year. Breakage and my hair won’t hold color. I stopped coloring it, brushing it and styling it because it was breaking off so much. I have bought so many products, including supplements trying to get my hair healthy and I’m still having this issue. I’ll have to check the ingredients on the 500 products I have. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

That's so interesting about the holding color! My curl wasn't making a nice pattern. It frizzed and was stringy. And I read that can be a symptom, too. I swear I wonder if we are using too many layers and products on everything now. Skin, hair, etc. I appreciate this!
@Saraphim382 жыл бұрын
@@Melissa55 My hair did the same thing…wouldn’t hold curl and would get stringy. I will say I was going through menopause too. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ Im still not sure why my hair took a turn for the worse. I totally agree with you on using so many products. I have simplified my skin care routine somewhat, now I guess I need to simplify my hair routine. I don’t know what shampoo and conditioner to use now…

Hi Melissa. I suffered from protein overload once too. I have coarse, naturally wavy, high porosity, low density hair that I straighten most of the time. It can happen to any hair type. I’m super careful now. Your hair looks great. Hang in there.

Shelly, I think hair like ours is more susceptible to this from what I read at naturally curly. It's more fragile I think. Thanks girl!
@thamieklybodonmi2 жыл бұрын
@@Melissa55 it's not more fragile, it's just that the scales that seal the core of the hair are "ruffled" in places when you have curly hair and that will allow the buildup of product and loss of moisture. I have knee length hair, maybe a bit shorter after last trim, and my hair is north European: fine and with only the slightest of curl. When brushed it goes silk straight. Every time I tried to keep or force the curls for a longer period of time I got breakage. Guess that keeping everything as close to natural as it gets will always be the best solution. Conditioner should be banned :) If you want your hair conditioned just put some coconut oil a couple of hours before shampooing. It goes away fast and your hair will glow.
@happygoluckyperson29352 жыл бұрын
@@thamieklybodonmi put coconut oil on before shampoo? How long do you leave it on?
@thamieklybodonmi2 жыл бұрын
@@happygoluckyperson2935 I try to get it on at least half an hour before shower and have a plastic shower cap over to warm up the scalp a bit. But a couple of hours are always better. The hair is softer. Oh, and no conditioner after. Just plain shampoo to clean the hair.
