I had a preventative bilateral mastectomy 2 1/2 years ago, and unfortunately, they did find a very small, invasive cancer. I was told to stop taking HRT and to begin taking tamoxifen. I stopped tamoxifen after six months, because the joint pain was unbearable and I gained weight. I just read a book by an MD called Oestragen Matters. Apparently there have been about 14 studies over the last 25 years or so that argue that estrogen may actually prevent breast cancer from occurring or from returning if your cancer was a low-grade cancer. There are doctors out there who also believe in this, and six weeks ago, I went back on the estrogen, patch, progesterone, and testosterone. It has really helped get rid of the brain fog and I have lost a few pounds and also have more energy. In this book, they discuss how much more likely women are to die of heart, disease, hip fractures, and develop dementia without estrogen. Anyway, I thought I would just share the information about the book.

also even if you have breast cancer you can take vagina estrogen without any problems. I believe it is progesterone that raises breast cancer risk, not estrogen, but it's not by a great deal. If you don't take the HRT you get other problems, higher rates of osteoporosis and bowel cancer etc, we have so may estrogen receptors. My mother in law went off HRT and was on tamoxifen was miserable and it came back anyway she may as well have been taking it and being comfortable. she was very sore and gained weight as well.

@iss8504 Жыл бұрын
Melissa, you should read Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming. He is a breast oncologist and doesn't think you necessarily have to be off estrogen forever. His wife had breast cancer, and she eventually went back on hrt because of quality of life. What is unfortunate is that some women will hear this and think the hrt caused your cancer. I hope your quality of life is okay. If it were me...i am not sure I would agree to going off hrt esp if I am older. I was so forgetful at 50 that it was very hard doing my job. I would have retired without hrt and that would have been devastating for my family because I am the sole breadwinner with 3 kids in college. I am highly educated. None of the things you mention helped me, only hrt. I could not remember anything I read after 3 paragraphs. I am an atty. The memory loss was terrible.
@Ayyeliki11 ай бұрын
That book is a gold mine and Dr. Bluming is brilliant ( but initially a voice in the wilderness). I went down the HRT proverbial rabbit hole at about age 60 and started HRT then! (Still within the ideal window). Unfortunately, the WHI caused much harm to decades of women w that knee-jerk press release (results were not even statistically significant, which means it could’ve been totally random)! The Cancer Journal April/may 2022 issue was entirely about HRT and ran an article that stated women on HRT had LESS all-cause morbidity and mortality than women not on HRT. Yet, most ob/gyns and oncologists are uninformed. Sigh… I’m a hospital pharmacist.

I’m getting that book I’m just turning 53 and am in the medical field and yes have to remember stuff for my job and my youngest 2 need to finish their education and I’m it as breadwinner. So for me this is important I just need to be alive for another 10 years then I’ll feel my job as mom is more complete. So I’m willing to take the risk if it helps. Thank you for your story.

Estrogen protects your brain, your bones & your heart. once your estrogen is depleted, we are more at risk. For any breay cancer concerns wether you had BC or a close relative had it - you have concerns, please refer to Dr. Jenn Simmons. She's a former breast cancer oncologist surgeon who became a Functional Médecin Dr after having BC herself. She has a fantastic podcast " Keeping abreast," & just published a new book. I would wake up every 2-3 hours. Weight gain around my waist…. Fatigue. A lot of changes. But guess what? I’m a SURVIVOR! You will be too! These changes are a small price to pay to “stay in the game”. The five years went by quickly and after you finish the therapy things start to go back to normal. Im sleeping well…active…and with intermittent fasting and elimination of sugars and most carbs the tire round my waist is shrinking. You GOT THIS!

Well done, Melissa. I never did HRT because i have a compelling family history of breast and ovarian and uterine cancer (just between my sister and mother) and it's contraindicated, for the same kinds of reasons your Dr's were alarmed at your wish to continue on it after your diagnosis. What nobody tells you is that you can feel better post menopause as well. I can tell you I feel better since menopause than i ever felt before. @numeal Жыл бұрын
Me too. Nothing to do with that disaster they describe if you don't go on HRT . There is so much pressure on the web nowadays talking about the "need" of HRT that they even make me doubt about my own experience. I agree with all of you that hot flashes and most things take place at perimenopausal times until your body adapts. When you are postmenopausal you feel ok again, even better than when you were full of estrogens. That, s my experience. I, ve been on menopause for seven years now. My weight is the same weight I had when I was 30, of course, now more effort is needed, healthy diet, EXERCISE is key... Etc. But I am happy too of not having tried HRT (My mom was on it and had breast cancer, I don't, know if it had something to do or not, but it was the first breast cancer on the whole family). Now they say it has nothing to do. My doctors (ALL of them recommended me not to go on it)

I was taken off HRT a long time ago. Now I have bone disease. It’s tricky. Trying to tackle this naturally because my Dr doesn’t want me on HRT again due to age and the cancer risk. I respect your openness about your cancer. Your message helps a lot of people. Bless you and wish you a lifetime of good health.
