At the University of North Texas on March 3, 2022., Young Conservative of Texas student group members were unable to hear from state legislative candidate Jeff Younger, as protestors banged tables and rang noisemakers to drown him out.
The heckler’s veto, or the use of disruptive tactics to silence speakers, has no place in educational institutions dedicated to fostering freedom of speech. Like book burning, it is a form of repression rooted in a desire to prevent the full array of ideas from being heard. Rather than allow individuals to learn from speakers and make up their own minds about the world around them, the heckler arrogantly prevents all listeners from hearing the speech. Shutting up speakers supplants challenging divergent opinions with logic and reason.
The willingness to have a discussion necessarily entails allowing your adversaries to speak, and that’s what separates the heckler’s veto from protected counterprotest. FIRE urges students to counter speech they dislike with more speech, not censorship or violence. This “more speech” approach fosters a deeper understanding of opposing views, but these salutary discussions cannot occur when one side persistently disallows the other to speak. The categorical difference between more speech and the heckler’s veto is the rejection of any effort to meaningfully engage with opposing views, eschewing dialogue for disruption.

I am 34 years old. While I sometimes feel nervous about not being as youmg as I used to be, I can now see the positives in my university education that I know too many young people are getting. I had multiple field placements. I had no idea what my professor's believed in politically, because they classes were jammed packed with material that did include their personal beliefs. I lived on campus with people different than me. I got to listen to people with polar opposite views talk about their views without being shouted down irrationally.

I graduated from UNT over the previous summer. I'm ashamed of what this university turned into, but I'm not surprised. We were sort of always known for not being too woke, or too controversial I guess, but I never saw anything escalate to this level.

Governor Abbot just signed recommending doctors send the state to check children who want to transition. #JeffYounger was the speaker at a club meeting at UNT Denton. He has been through years of legal battles. He is trying to speak to #savejames from transitioning. But #JudgeMaryBrown ruled the other way.

@Percilott just what Generation do you think I was born into? As to whether this so called "nonsense" is Freedom, it absolutely is. This is Free Speech. You see the first ammendment guarantees freedom from Government sensorship, not that anyone has to listen to you and it gives the right to shout down anyone spewing hateful rhetoric. Furthermore, the first amendment does not grant the right to a lack of consequences from your speech. The Right is so hypocritical, the toute the free market, yet what is a politician if not a seller, selling their ideology/platform to the crowd for votes. In this case the market spoke and rejected the seller. The Right should be delighted to see the free market in action.

@@MisterPunch19 That is not free speech or the free market I would argue. Not sure why they screamed at him like that and to me it doesn't matter honestly as the situation is problematic. Free market would be leaving the room if they don't want to hear what he has to say. Actively screaming someone down and preventing him from speaking for an event he was seemingly invited to is going against free speech. For example, what if there was someone from the opposite political spectrum to him that was invited and then screamed at? This would be just as unacceptable. One's rights stop where the rights of others begin. One cannot demand free speech and then deny it to someone else, which is why this is not something positive. Like I said, they should have just left. That would have been the adult thing to do instead of screaming.

The free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment only guarantees that the Governor won't censor your speech, not that anyone has to listen to you, but what the First Amendment does guarantee is the right to assemble and protest which is what the students are doing. And to answer your question yes I support the right to protest by any non-hate group.
