I’ve trained with them in Okinawa I saw their living conditions and the way they’re treated it’s bad and I know for sure that it affects their psychological states but I also noticed while training with them in oki Japan that lots of them have troubled backgrounds prior to joining the military. While I was there a number of murders happened, sexual assaults and theft and all branches were restricted to base at least 6 times within my 4 year contract there. After coming back from a vacation to visit oki again just yesterday the Japanese are still concerned and still talk about wanting the military presence to leave their island in its entirety but other Japanese rely on our presence because tourism and military members are a larger portion of their income. I love Okinawa it’s a very special place to me and it’s where I met my wife and got married so it’s tragic to see these things play out from both sides.

There were protests the week I showed up in 1995 over a rape case. A full third of a tiny 60 mile long Island are US bases. I was on an air base and people's houses were right on the fence line.
