The most essential modifications for Honda’s venerable 250X or 250EX
Honda’s TRX250X, formerly known as the TRX250EX, is a t nimble handling, peppy running, sporty looking machine that’s great at getting new riders hooked on the fun ATVing. It’s reliability allows it to be handed down in families again and again adding a lot to its value. One of the best things about it is that iIt’’s a machine that younger riders can afford to save up for and purchase.
Like any other sport, new riders tend to improve at the fastest rate in the beginning. In motor sports, even recreational ones, this often results in a desire for upgrades and performance parts. Based on our review of the 2016 250X and our time spent riding the machine since, we put together an upgraded version of the 250X and 250EX looking to improve it in every way while covering some absolute essentials.
With a few hours of installation time and a modest amount of money, we made our 250X a tougher, safer, and more stable ATV with peppier power and, in our overall opinion, increased its overall appeal. This combination of upgrades work well as a whole or you could pick and choose the upgrades that fit your needs best. This ATV is all about having fun, and we think our hopped up 250X delivers more of it.

@@aenarcos7021 I'm so sorry we missed this question. We need to make a video on this in the future. There are two types of a arms, standard travel and long travel. You can achieve around the same wheel travel with either setup. However, long travel refers more to the length of the shock used. Standard travel will typically use a stock length shock in long travel requires the use of a slightly longer shock. Anytime you add wider aftermarket A-Arms, you will need to have your shocks revalved and re sprung to deal with the added Leverage. Simply cranking up your shocks spring preload is not sufficient. If you plan on adding long travel a arms then you will either have to have your stock shocks lengthened, in addition to the other before listed modifications which can only be done on certain models. Adding an axle does not require you to do anything to your suspension. We did the rear shock on our Raptor redone to match the fronts. We worked with Race Tech on this build. They can help you figure out what you need or if you have any other questions feel free to hit us back.

@@ATVonDemand Alba is making extended long travel a arms that come with adapters on them so your able to run the OEM shocks. Can’t really beat the price and then you have the option to change to “long travel” shocks later by simply unbolting the adapters and removing them which gives you the lower mounting point for the LT shocks. That’s what I went with and was able to mount the Alba a arms immediately with the OEM shocks on my quad while I waited for months for my custom PEP shocks to be built and sent out to me. That was really nice because I got the Tusk +6 rear axle as well and the Alba a arms aloud me to enjoy the benefits of the extra width front and rear while I waited for good shocks. So I was still able to ride the quad and there was minimal downtime, just something to think about. I had my raptor to the local Motocross track already and put the Alba a arms and everything to the test and they held up to whatever abuse I could throw at it so I wouldn’t be afraid to run those A arms in any situation.

Tiny McPoop Ok but what about the chassis design and it’s ability to actually use that added extra power? I mean... I could throw a ESR330 powervalved engine in my lawn mower and make it faster as frig.... but I’m not gonna. Idk man I think I’ll just stick with the Honda. The Craptor is an ok machine, but when I’m spending thousands of dollars start getting into the details and it’s just a fact that the TRX450 is very very very closely designed off the TRX250 chassis and that chassis set the bar for superior race stability and cornering capabilities at race speeds with the ability to do so using mondo horsepower and lunatics at the throttle. And quite frankly that bar has never been topped by any other maker. Only by makers who are literally copying the the TRX250 geometry. It’s just a fact. It’s lower center of gravity and narrow framework between the a arms and not to mention the litany of aftermarket parts to make it even wider stronger longer and better is just a mile long. Sooo idk why go for pretty good when can be fukn amazing? Honda simply just came up the absolute best combination of measurements and angles and it really can’t be beat. To be totally honest I’d much rather skip both of these and go directly to the TRX330 and just be done w it. And probably the only reason I’d go to the TRX450R is if I absolutely wanted a brand new machine that’s only been ridden by me. Like I said I’m not shitting on the Craptor. It’s pretty ok machine, I’ve ridden quite a few, it’s basically for Yamaha fans. I’m not saying it’s not good, I’m just saying it’s not number ONE that’s all. Maybe a person who’s taller or heavier would want one over the other. That’s also a factor. I’ve had banshees I’ve had Tri-Zs before. So it’s not that I’m a Honda fan boy that thinks only Honda makes good stuff. It’s just that this chassis like I said is simply that much better. It’s just all there is to it

Tiny McPoop Back in the day the TRX set more race records than anything on the market. And even today those records have only been replicated by the fact that this chassis by default was almost taken out of the game, by regulations demanding a in production machine....and then the intro to the 400EX kept it in the game. Yamaha has a 450 and that chassis is also better than the top heavy raptor. I’d definitely go w that one over the raptor also, and guess what else.... Yamaha was also staring at 250R blueprints when they built their 450 also. They tried to disguise it, but anyone paying attention can see this in the front cross section.

I have an 09 SE and have thousands of hard miles on it. The only thing that has broke on it was the front sprockets teeth suddenly disappeared so I changed the chain and sprockets. I can't justify buying a new one that's a little faster. I'd buy a double R and give my 09 to my Son.

That's a good looking quad! I loved my 700 but with a wider body I could see myself clipping more trees and rocks at high speeds. I had to replace my steering column twice. It doesn't look like anything has been done to help the lights from breaking off in a roll over either. I'll bet that thing would be real fun in the dunes!

A wider Raptor would be the perfect bike. As an enthusiast over 200 lbs, the big engine and better comfort of a bigger bike makes sense. But one of the main reasons I want a sport bike is to take turns at the fastest possible. I will never get rid of my 2014 Honda 450R but this thing would be a really good investment that I would definitely purchase if I didn't already have my 450. The more wide Raptor gives you so much more space to toss the thing around, to stay planted, and to get through the trails as well as the track. It is a seriously awesome machine, and I hope Yamaha considers making this a real thing, because you bet your bottom dollar that they would sell like hot cakes.

I LOVE what you guys have done with this prototype Raptor! I have been looking at the Raptor for the last several months and I'm getting very close to purchasing one. I'm not entirely sure if I will hold off on my purchase in hopes of seeing a newer version like this one due to the fact that it will more than likely be a couple of years before it would be released...if at all. :/ Regardless, I just want to give a HUGE shout out to everyone who was involved in this Raptor prototype build! It is absolutely, positively as dialed in of a Sport ATV as anyone could ever hope for. I certainly hope that Yamaha listens and takes action and comes up with something as good (if not better) straight from the factory!!! In the meantime, one of the motorsports dealers that you highlighted should consider offering this incredible machine as a new, straight from the dealership custom package. I realize that this was not an inexpensive machine to build, however I believe that for the serious buyer, there is definitely a demand. I know how much work goes into creating this machine and filming/narrating a video like this. Fantastic job guys!

boffin6969 if you were considering buying a raptor pull the trigger. Who knows how long we will wait to see a machine like this or if we ever will. The current raptor is pretty awesome and easy to turn into this. You're correct, widening the machine wasn't exactly cheap however we really tried to max out value for the dollar on the parts we picked. Not by purchasing the least expensive but by using products that offered the most performance and value for the dollar. We're thrilled with the way this machine turned out and really appreciate you watching and giving us your feedback.

I've been looking at a new raptor for a while. Currently a yfz owner but do mostly trail riding, and have heard that raptors are more tippy so I have held off getting one for a few years. A wider raptor would definitely push me to upgrade!

I used wheel extenders front and rear to get the width of this build. The rear is at 49.5 and the front is at 48.75. Since I only Trail ride and light jumps the wheel extenders work fine. The ride is so much better. More stable in the turns and side hills. I had a YFZ450 and my 700 rides so much like it not that its been widen. Its like having the ride of a 450 with the torque of the 700.

For about $800 you can get the +2 Houser arms and Dominator 2 axle. Coupled with offset wheels it makes it over 50 inches wide. This makes it an absolute 450 killer, with an insane feeling of stability. If they built a factory Raptor at that width there’s no doubt more people would stop complaining the Raptor feels “tippy” and buy the Raptor over the YFZ.

We would try to avoid adding additional wheel offset. While we do it on UTVs and ATVs with power steering and smaller ATVs like Blasters of Honda 250X, adding wheel offset increases bump feedback to the rider and makes the machine harder to steer. This is the reason that most top MX racers use the widest A-Arms possible with wheels that are offset inward, which reduces steering effort. To us, offset wheels are a last resort and often not worth the trade-off. Additionally, you have to have your suspension revelved and re-sprung to go wide Just sharing info, not trying to correct you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

ATVonDemand couldn’t agree more, however I run a precision stabilizer and even in the harshest trails I get no feedback. But again that’s another $500 for the stabilizer, so without it, it’s probably best to run stock wheels.

The stabilizer will help on bump feedback but it won't help the increase in steering effort. This might be a good setup for you though and that's what matters most.

Dirt Nasty while widening a raptor will make it handle better, by no means does it create a 450 killer. In order to do that, you'd have to put the machine on a diet to drop the 20+ lbs that the raptor has on the 450's, then you'd not only need to go with the close ratio gearing of a 450, but you'd also need to do cams & a tune to acheive the "lightswitch" like power delivery of a 450 class bike. What you're suggesting is almost like comparing an old dt 400 to an early 2000's yz125.

I had a 2015 raptor 700 definitely was a upgrade from my 06 700. But i,prefer the yfz 450r wider and lower to the ground handled way better and didn't feel top heavy. Yamaha hopefully will do changes to both,machines for 2019.

A wider raptor rides better out there in the dunes. All raptors’ riders around me had made their raptors wider for better controls on top of the dunes. As you can imagine, shifting your position from side to side is needed in each turn while riding on dunes, thus making the raptor wider will help a lot at critical angles.

ATVonDemand I widened my 07 700 when I went big bore stroker and built it to an 12.5:1 804cc with 54mm TB with dual pink injectors and a Cuervo Racing 5250 cam Cuervo racing port and polished head. I went +2 LT a arms and an adjustable -2 to +4 axelcaliber axel. I also added a +4 swingarm. It’s still a handful in trails/woods. 98hp 65tq on vp 110 pc5 controller DMC Force 4 Duals.

I had a brandnew 2001 raptor 660r. First complaint was it was tippy and tall feeling. (I was riding a banshee and 85 atc250r) first mods were 20 inch fast trekkers out back n hole shots up front on wider offset front wheels. Spacers in the rear.(axle bent jumping to high). Next mod was i turned the linkage around 180 degrees and lowered the rear alot. Stiffended things up a tad but was by far the most noticable improvement. I miss it for trail rippin but the 05 yfz450 that replaced it was just so awesome i never looked back except wheel banshees n raptors blew the decals off it top speed on gravel roads. My opinion after riding every yamaha atv made since the early 80s ( trizinger. Yt125 n 175. Ytm200e.tym225 . Tri-z . Moto 4 200 225 350 bigbear. Kodiak banshee raptor yfz grizzly plus over 50 mx bikes mostly yamahas.... hers my opinion.... lower it. Widen it. And skidpkate and gytr exhaust system . Pro taper bars.. ( stock bars are so gay wtf....) and yes i made a major mistake and bought a pile of shit POLARIS. Its ALWAYS broken. Wolverine x4 on the way asap.

Aside from the skid plate and seat cover upgrades there is very little here that should raise the machines retail price. We wouldn't expect Yamaha to add adjustable a arms to it, just build longer ones. Of course, the axle would also have to be reengineering Fritz extra length but the added cost of manufacturing wider a arms in an axle shouldn't be that much. Utilizing the same shocks recalibrated shouldn't add much in the way of cost either. We think it would be a huge win for everyone. Big thanks for watching and commenting.

They need make 2 versions a 50 inch raptor 700r independent it will take over the woods💪💪💯 like the trx700xx has.. Honda messed up when they stop making the 700xx sense the sxs got the trails so ate out. Then make a 50 inch straight axle they both would take over the game... I’d buy the raptor 700r 50 inch independent in a heart beat...

By all means! Keep sport quads alive! My 18 year old son is buying a raptor , I’ve had a raptor for a couple years and I’m tired of working on old $#!!. I would buy a 700rr and sell mine for an extremely discounted price to my 14 year old son! Then I would have some incredibly maintained 80s-90s sport quads for sale! We all start from somewhere .

That's cool that you and your son are rocking sport quads. You might have to toss a couple grand to build your own RR. Yamaha doesn't have to do much without competition. The Raptor sells itself. You bring up a good point, compared to the amount of time you spend working on new machines is greatly reduced. Sport quads are also a lot easier to work on than 4x4 ATVs or SXS.

I've got the Raptor 350, and my brother had a Raptor 700. The 350 has good power for what it is, and super comfortable to ride. The 700 is very tall and tippy feeling with what feels like too much power for its handling abilities.

A member of our staff used to own a warrior and took it from a bone-stock machine in 1996 to a 430cc bore and stroke engine from Powroll. That Warrior was decked with wider a arms, aftermarket suspension, Etc. We would love to see a mid bore machine similar to The Warrior come back to yamaha's lineup. With a few updates and a reasonable price tag as well. All that being said, we think you would like the Raptor 700 widened out. All those stock, we think it handles quite a bit better than you're giving it credit for. Love your input, thanks for watching, and sorry it took so long to get back with you.

Build it I will buy it ! Wouldn't mind a higher compression ratio with heavy duty bearings and forged internals a true 700cc. This would be the winning machine for years to come. YAMAHA 700 RR

Excellent video and a great build on the RR! The narrow width of the stock Raptor is the ONLY aspect of the bike that has me debating between the 700R SE and the 450R SE. If the Raptor was wider the 450R wouldn't even be a consideration. Yamaha NEEDS to widen the Raptor! Seeing what you did has put the Raptor back in the hunt as my next bike. Scott

Dune rider here with some time on an original 660R and 700R raptor. The 700 was a huge leap from the tippy and torque rich (Slow and low revving) 660R. The motor revved, suspension was fantastic, and the quad could be hustled pretty quickly for a heavy machine. The motor was the best upgrade, feeling very powerful with power everywhere. I wish my 09 YFZ450R felt like the raptor 700. My only gripe with the YFZ450R is that it felt too heavy for the motor. Now I'm generally a 2 wheeler rider so it could be the quad felt slow to my YZ450FX. Regardless, the 700R felt really good. 10% more power sounds even better. With that kind of power, a wider more stable stance would be welcome as the speeds rise. High quality rebuildable shocks on the front would be a welcome improvement. Body english was enough to keep the original 700R flat but a wider track would sure help out lots.

Don't get me wrong, as a Yfz450R owner I've ridden a couple of these raptors stock. If you're gonna do all this work, why not just buy a Yfz450R?

Jehon Wright as a raptor owner on staff, I have had the chance to test a number of YFZ450Rs. First, we're hoping Yamaha will build a wide Raptor similar to this available stock. The reason that a raptor owner would want to do all this work for them self is because the Raptors engine while still fast has a much broader power band that is more forgiving of mistakes and less fatiguing on Long rides. It also offers reverse. The Raptors airgonomics are also a bit more comfortable for many riders on Long rides. I would say if you ride fast all of the time the 450 might be a slightly better option but if you want something comfortable that hauls and doesn't wear quite as much on the rider, the Raptor is a great machine. We love them both.
