Zookeepers at Chester Zoo are celebrating the birth of a critical endangered Bornean orangutan. The fuzzy orange baby is the first of its kind to be born at the British zoo in almost a decade and is an important milestone for conservationist efforts. Recent estimates indicate that less than 55,000 Bornean orangutans are left on the island of Borneo in Indonesia - the only place they can be found in the wild.

For those wondering WHY orangs are so interesting and uniquely engaging - I believe it has something to do with the fact that they are one of our closest biological relatives, sharing a common ancestor, and that commonality in our eyes, body language, movement and parental instinct lends a deep simpatico.

Chester zoo needs to provide a more natural habitat for them. Instead of ruff, cement. Mom and Dads fur looks horrible. Add some cocanut oil and coconuts. To their diet.

It's so sad how so many producers just don't seem to care about the eco system and how important it is to keep these animals alive, not just because they have inherent value, but also because if you take out one part of the ecosystem, the entire thing collapses. My home country has started moving more and more towards completely palm oil free products, labeling everything that is palm oil free, and I hope more countries do the same. Hopefully someday in the future orangutans and other animals won't be threatened by the industry anymore.
