As a film student i am always trying to learn something new,, with so many videos out there that are less than par it is easy to get lost and frustrated. your two videos have helped me tremendously with my d5100 settings there are too many videos with over dubbed music which is so annoying and long intros that i personally dont give a shit about. Your video is straight to the point and i applaud you for that. THANKS!

I watched this video and appreciate your working knowledge of the DSLR for video. You are head and shoulders above the rest of the amateur crowd. Wow, thanks Harvey. I appreciate the very kind words. I don't see myself as head and shoulders above the rest. I don't use grey cards, green screens, or any Adobe programs, so I'm destined to remain an amateur buried in obscurity, lol. I suppose we really are our own worst critic! I just like to keep things somewhat simple, and I'm happy with that. Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoy my videos!

We actually planned a trip up there for November but could not find a good place to stay (we travel with relatives in their motor home and have specific requirements) but we will be getting up there at some point. Will be doing a video in Johnson Valley at "The Hammers" this weekend - not Death Valley but still a lot of fun.

The kit lens works exceptionally well. The key is post-production editing; specifically color grading/correcting. I would also suggest purchasing the 35mm f1.8 over the 50mm for a crop sensor DSLR such as the D5100. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I was also thinking about having an external mic because the in camera mic does not sound so good. Thanks for the H1 suggestion. I would definitely look into and the price is also looking reasonable. So you think the lens is good enough for making such kind of videos? Yes, I am familiar with that specific nomenclature of the 180 degree rule, but as most things that improve, evolve, and change throughout time such as film and cameras for example, these nomenclatures can change or provide multiple meanings. In this case, the digital age produced an additional meaning to the 180 degree rule which indeed has everything to do with shutter speed. It is an accepted term in the field, and to say it has nothing to do with shutter speed would be incorrect.

Thanks allot!!!! The Auto ISO and exposure lock work great. I basically am able to lock settings using this trick. This is something Nikon does not want you to know, their solution to manual mode is to buy a D7000. I shoot at 1080p 24, so I set shutter at 1/50. 1.8 for shooting people. The Auto ISO was limited to 1600 and 1/60 min shutter speed. A little confused as to what min shutter speed does for Auto ISO?

The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is my favorite lens. I even used it to make this tutorial. It would be perfect for a concert because it performs well in low light, and will capture most of the action. You could probably even get the entire stage in the shot in the front row!

Hospitals are fairly well-lit and bright white. I would try my best to go without a flash. Which lenses do you have? Just the 18-55 kit lens? Try using a tripod at all times to decrease your shutter speed. If you have time, purchase a prime lens. This will pretty much guarantee you shots in the hospital without a flash. Don't be afraid to bump your ISO up to 3200 for pictures, but keep it below 1600 for video, unless you have noise reduction software.

@Prouisorsapientiae9 жыл бұрын
Ibn Fatota Yes, I use these settings for all types of recording. I would not suggest using this style if you are going over ISO1600 if there are a lot of shadows, as it will produce a lot of noise in the shadows. If you have a de-noise plug-in such as Neat Video, this will be no problem.

Hi, Justine! Personally, I use a B+W ND 3.0-1000x, and a Marumi Variable ND filter. They aren't the cheapest kind, but are excellent quality. I have seen good feedback about Hoya brand ND filters, and they are generally cheaper. Just makes sure whatever you get has coated glass to reduce flaring and ghosting. I hope this helps!

Great video, I have a d3300 and its the same method when filming. Another tip for recording movie is on a daylight situations use a -0.3 or -0.7 levels in exposure comp. because I see the semi automatic modes overexposure a little (with matricial metric mode). In low light situations maybe use exp comp too, with auto ISO limit 1600, the cam will not set too high iso and the less noise. All this with the 35mm prime, 1.8g. Thanks.
@Prouisorsapientiae7 жыл бұрын

Do you have a brand or and model for a budget neutral density and polarizer filter? Thanks again for the information on your videos!
@Prouisorsapientiae10 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends on how low budget you want to go, and how picky you are with your images. For me, Marumi seems to be the best balance between budget and high-end filters. They are only a little more expensive than the budget filters such as Hoya and Tiffen, which is also seem to work pretty darn well (in regards to flaring, ghosting, color casting and tinting, sharpness, et cetera). Just make sure whichever filter you choose, uses multi-coated glass. I hope this helps narrow your choices down, Ron!

yeah i've got the ISO at 100, the aperature around 4.5 and the shutter speed at 1/50 and it still gives me grain even when i lit with two soft boxes. I might just have to get a sharper or prime wide angle soon.
@Prouisorsapientiae11 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The only "problem" you will have, is that 50mm on a crop sensor is a short telephoto lens. You will find yourself having to stand further away from your subject to get everything in frame. It's an excellent portrait lens.

@Prouisorsapientiae10 жыл бұрын
Robin Lynch That's a really nice lens! Honestly, I would never get a 50mm lens. On a crop sensor body it's a 75mm focal length, which is pretty much a short, telephoto lens. The 35mm f1.8 is very versatile, and more flexible than a 50mm focal length. Ultimately, it only matters to you, and what you plan on doing with your camera!

Just so you know, the "180° rule" you mentioned doesn't have anything to do with the shutter speed. It refers to the practice of not breaking the action line (the imaginary line drawn in the direction of the action taking place in that scene) while filming. For example if you were to film a dialogue scene with two actors facing each other, the camera wouldn't break 180° of the actors action line.

Muchas gracias por tu ayuda. Hace ya un año que tengo la Nikon d5300 y todabia no creo haber sacado todo el provecho a ella en video. Saludos desde el norte argentino.

Thanks for this info dude!, it's pretty basic, but I finally figured out how to proper work with depth of field, and even adjusting ISO on the go!! Would you recommend me a camera that can record film/music videos in the 500 or less USD range?, mirrorless or Nikon, will try to get one on Ebay but I don't know what to choose, thanks!!

Your other video is fine and thanks.. but my opinion that we cant cahange the shutter angle in D5100 is right. I think.

Thank you for this video. I do have a question : I need to shoot a video with the date stamp on. I went to the shooting display menu down to the print date and it is on off and I cannot figure out how to change it to on. Can you give me some help with this please. I can put it on pictures just not on video

Hello. Great video with great tips. I have also a D5100, amd i ried to make some videos using your tips. But that custom Picture Style makes, obviously, a flat image, and i am not being able to, in post-processing, edit the image to make it look good. Have you have some tips for the editing part? Of what preset do you use? I used a Nikon 18-200mm lens, by the way. Thank you.

ecobcg If your editor cannot modify curves, levels, or color, you might want to just try shooting in a Neutral picture style. This seems to produce the best out-of-camera video. That's what I use when I don't plan on doing a lot of edits later.

Hey, thanks a lot for this video. I use a Nikon D5000, but most of the settings you described I was able to find and play with. I had no ideea they influence the video as well. Coincidentally, I also shoot with the 35mm F1.8G you mentioned. As long as you shoot mostly static scenes, it's a brilliant lens and I found it enough for most shots.

Yeah, I love the 35mm lens. I found if I pull the camera strap tightly against the back of my neck while shooting video, it actually stabilizes the shot pretty well!

Great video! I learnt a lot ~ however, could you cover on video grains?? I keep getting grainy videos and I don't know why..

well the next question is, what program do you use to edit, and can you do a step by step tutorial to show your process?

Have the 5200 first time full dslr and this has helped in understanding the controls in general for me let alone for video, thanks

I can't speak for the D3200, but I do have both the 600D and the D5100. I prefer the D5100 for many reasons, but the 600D is easier to work with when it comes to manual video settings. They are both well performing cameras, and which is better is purely subjective. Ultimately, it is up to you!
