Great stuff, Wayne! I agree that having a light adds a huge element of safety. As you say, it can keep you from getting a stick in the eye when traveling at night but another huge advantage is being able to notice hazards like widowmakers if you're forced to set up camp at night. Also, if you have a small day pack it's wise to have either safety glasses or a pair of spare prescription glasses if you need them. If you have to hike at night or nap flint, safety glasses can save your eye(s). Nothing can make a bad situation worse than injuring your eye!

One addition I would make, a wool blanket. Stays warm wet or dry. The small tarp is good as a impromptu poncho in the rain. The audio was impacted, by the wind I think. Your voice almost dropped out several times. We could follow it well enough.
@kullcraven

High winds was the problem, but the wind canceling feature was better than wind noise i think. lol. Wool blanket is a good addition if people like to carry it and will carry it. :) In my personal kit , which i have shared before, has a 0c sleeping bag, much lighter and compact than a wool blanket. Tho wool has its unique features that makes it a great choice. Take care Nelson and all the best.

Some great ideas shared. I too have had troubles with pulling out my emergency headlamp and discovering that at some point in the past it had accidentally got turned on and drained the batteries. My remedy for that has been to reverse one of the batteries in the headlamp. That way the lamp will not turn on unintended and will keep the batteries with the headlamp. Hunting for batteries somewhere in your pack when it is dark can be problematic sometimes. With my poor memory, it has worked well for me to keep the batteries with the headlamp but with one reversed.
@kullcraven
@kullcraven Жыл бұрын
Thanks Lonnie and i always put the batteries in before dark, also keep the lamps and batteries all in the same bag. Tho revering one will work, i have had batteries corrode my terminals before after keeping batteries in lamps for awhile. Great idea and thanks for sharing what you do to keep your batteries. :)

My POM Kit is in a black and white plastic lady's toiletry bag. Works much better than the previous set up. It drops into my handbag like a dream and its quickly transferable to my backpack. It goes EVERYWHERE with me. Right now as we speak my handbag is just around the corner in the kitchen. With POM Kit in it. It's just...THERE.

I liked the idea behind this video. The sound was terrible. I still heard everything you said and it all made sense. I too, use 2 tarps. One for shelter, one for groundcloth.

I was lucky that the sound was as good as it was. high winds and i did everything i could. lol Thanks for the watch and good to know you carry a couple tarps. :)

Two tarps, I love it. Also to prevent moisture comming from the dirt you are sitting on. If one go in group everyone schould carry 10 feet of paracord. 3 pieces together gives the usely 30 feet of paracord. For those who are not familiar with knots, take 30 feet of paracord, folded it in two en place every 3 or 4 inches a overhands knot. It gives you the 10 feet ridge line, that can be used without knots, but with toggles, that can be found plenty on the forest floor.

For minimalist kit I like a 10x10 or 10x12 tarp, works for plenty of room for a shelter and ground mat in one. I like a stainless steel bottle nested in a stainless steel cup, a bic lighter wrapped in gorilla tape, a 6 inch ferro rod, about 30 feet of paracord, small fixed blade knife with 90 degree spine and a good wet stone. I grew up in the woods and back then we mostly just carried a knife and a bic lighter until we found out about ferro rods and between those 2 items and a good pot or bottle we camped out in debris shelters and forts all the time. We learned about huntin, trapping tracking and fishing. It's pretty amazing how much stuff people feel they need in the wild, most of it is just creature comforts.

I use a 6x8 also. I'm six foot. 5x7 just doesn't cut it. I've pitched my 6x8 tarp in the Holden configuration and had enough room to be dry and comfortable. I carry a smaller tarp to use as ground sheet. Just makes sense. In one emergency kit I do have a 5x7 nylon tarp. Barely enough room to stay dry and if the wind shifts can get wet easily. I don't do what I like. I do what works for me.

Great kit and video! It’s good to return to basics and as you have said, if a pack gets too heavy, most people won’t bother carry one! I try to stick to the 10 c’s to keep the weight down, that seems to work for me . If I may make a suggestion, add a couple of contractors bags to the pack, has many uses and doesn’t add much weight to one’s pack. Great video and take care!o😊

Thanks Craig, many items you can add, and if you noticed i have a belt knife , saw and cell phone on me at all times, but i was covering the pack and how minimal you can go and still survive. With enough food and water and skillset, i could last months with this little bit of gear. lol

Might I suggest wrapping about 10 feet of 1" Duct Tape or Gorilla Tape around each of your lighters, it doesn't add noticable weight and can be used for fire starter/extender, firstaid and gear or clothing repair, ect.

It can happen to us all, but like you said, SURVIVAL means life threatening. I have survived many knights in the forest that would have been deadly. BUT i had the knowledge and gear to make it safe and a camp out. lol We all can get lost or stranded but being able to keep yourself safe is the key, with gear an skill. :) ATB.
