@ it was made in sega of America because over there on the Japanese side, they were making sonic 3 at the time because the lack of communication which ultimately created these characters they added into sonic spin ball and just because it is added to origins doesn’t mean that it is canon maybe if they said it was some game gear or games are just not Canon, especially in this new era of sonic none of these characters pop up or even reference in the new comic book TV show and games maybe this is a different dimension or something, but if not, then it is not canon

Well no that’s not what the definition of canon is. And SEGA themselves have deconfirmed certain things as canon. The “everything is canon” thing is just a marketing ploy, it basically means everything (aside the movies) going forward is canon. That’s applied to even the weirdest parts of Sonic stuff, like Speed Simulator on Roblox.

"Canon" has ALWAYS meant an officialized collection of works within any particular subject, topic, or character (as well as a secondary definition of a legal qualifier in regards to certain mandates, laws, and principles that are unrelated to this.) Much like "FAN" (see: FANtatic), canon's etymological roots come from religious and/or cultish origins. Various belief groups have their own canon's that are essentially anthologies of various media forwarding the beliefs -- however the key difference between an anthology and a CANON is that anthologies are selected from any number of authors; whereas canon specifically ties to a level of 'genuine' or 'authentic' value of the work and is authored/created/accepted by authoritative bodies within the group. For example, certain Christian "canon" s include not just the Bible, but hymnals, ceremonies, teachings, prayers, and all kinds of associated literature that are not specifically within the Bible. As well as the Bible itself also containing writings from several authors. Essentially, it's all """"canon"""" within the context of itself, even if the individual works are derivative, initially unofficial, or disagreed on upon by other sects with a different ""canon"". Just because a lot of fans (that have no idea what words mean) have bastardized the definition to mean something entirely different, doesn't mean the word doesn't still have a real meaning that plenty of people are aware of and understand; including random social media managers and brand directors. As for SEGA in particular, it's also important to note just how much exaggeration and misinformation and misquoting is out there. We still have people in this community quoting Yuji Naka in regards to Sonic even after he was no longer involved with the franchise; likewise how sonic fans often jump the gun to say "SUPER EMERALDS AND HYPER SONIC AREN'T CANON" despite the actual information we've been given quite literally just stating the super emeralds are in "another dimension." SEGA stating that everything is canon, while hilarious, is also a directed message at the people constantly fixated over """canon"""-status to the point they'll straight up skip certain games or overrate others just because they fit less or more into the series at large. When """canon"""'s definition became so watered down to the point people believed it was a linear connection from game to game rather than just an official and accepted entry into the franchise, saying something ISN'T canon is essentially the same as saying it's not relevant -- which fans use as an excuse to not buy something. So you're right, it IS marketing because no publisher will straight up say "HEY! THIS PRODUCT DOESNT MATTER TO THE FRANCHISE AT LARGE" and sure enough, Sonic Team has been delivering on most if-not-all Sonic stuff getting references and callbacks (some more subtle than others) in alternative media. TSR is just as CANON (real definition) as Colors; just how Spinball is just as CANON (real definition) as Sonic Battle; just how Labyrinth is just as CANON (real definition) as Prime. For legal reasons there are a few specific elements of the franchise that are safe to assume as "non-canon" (at the current time) but that is definitely not PERMANENTLY the case as previously unaccepted works can become accepted into canon; other works can even be removed; and once-removed works can be added back. The whole idea of a canon is that the highest authoritative body decides it. Especially when even IF Sonic Team themselves say something, its typically up to fan translators to decipher it, and they've gotten it wrong many, MANY times before. TL;DR bc I know you don't care enough to read all this: By all means hate whatever you want, but when you use the REAL definition of canon, everything IS canon. Dont listen to influencer accounts just getting clicks, and think/research for yourself.
