My classmate here is a perfect example of what happens when you learn from an actual fighter and not someone who just trained in a classroom with no conflict like most of the people you see on social media

Kung fu works. But you have to train in self defense situations. People forget to train that and just train the sport. It is something that needs to change as most KF is represented pretty poorly due to the mcdojos. Good kung fu teachers also will tell their students when they are learning sport or self defense as not all kung fu training is for real life situations.
@urmum.comlel Жыл бұрын
You say that but hes using a bunch techniques which don't exist in WC and not using a bunch that are. Any martial art is better than nothing but Kungfu will always lose against MMA. This kid might have kung fu as a base but his wins are based on him being a well rounded fighter.

@@urmum.comlel I keep seeing this same argument made by some folks "hEs nOt uSiNg rEaL kUnG fU tEkniQ" like... What are real Kung Fu techniques, are you expecting to see tiger claws, iron palm strikes to the chest that cause opponents to cough up blood? Every martial art, no matter where it's from is based on punching, grappling and kicking....by your logic we can say oh the punches in Muay Thai aren't really Muay Thai techniques because they look like boxing punches....the throws in judo aren't real judo because they look like wrestling... If all cultures across the world adapted the spear as a weapon, don't you think the same idea could apply to punches and kicks? That they could be very similar in combat no matter which martial art you do? Kung Fu's problem just like any traditional martial art, is not that it's techniques aren't effective, because Kung Fu techniques are used in Chinese Sanda and Shuai Jiao.... The problem with traditional Kung Fu is that it hasn't been pressure tested or updated to modern times, but you do see some small examples of it being tested and updated like the previously mentioned Sanda which is a modern form of Chinese kickboxing that has its roots in traditional Kung Fu, they took the best techniques of many Kung Fu styles and applied it with modern training methods to create an effective modern combat style.... The idea that different martial arts styles developed isolated from one another or are completely alien I think is false...we keep praising MMA as this end all be all, but MMA exists because they combined the best techniques from different traditional styles like Muay Thai, Jujitsu etc.

It's not a beginner martial art, it's not for everyone and generally speaking people who are actually proficient with it are not interested in competitions. @turbopowergt Жыл бұрын
@@gharm9129 I didn’t miss it, and you could be right. But the way that he throws the kicks are much more like TKD kicks than any Wing Chun or Chinese style variants I’ve seen. Given that so many kids in the US are exposed to TKD or Karate as their first style I would be much more likely to wager that he has TKD in his history than a Wing Chun variant. His kick combos are standard TKD green belt (and honestly the most reliable). However he does throw more classic wing chun kicks in trapping range.

The problem with the "MMA fanboys" (I like MMA by the way, I'm not a sports combat hater) is they already decide what works and what doesn't, so if you give them proof some traditional martial art works in full contact sparring... they will create any kind of excuses to refute that proof: >You do some TMA, spar against some sport combat practitioner and lose: this proves your art doesn't work. >You do some TMA, spar against some sport combat practitioner and win?... well, 2 options: 1) "That was a low level/smaller than you sport combat practitioner, that's why you win. This sparring doesn't proves anything and your TMA still sucks". *or* 2) "Yes, but you win without flying kicks, chain punches, and so on (they are literally waiting for you to do some kind of Hollywood sh1t, it's like they think a TMA must look like the choreographies for movies that are made based on forms/katas). So you win with basic kick boxing, your TMA still sucks". Something alike do the TMA lovers when they lose but never want to recognize their style is not that effective, or maybe not all their techniques are suit for real combat.
@combatsportsarchive7632 Жыл бұрын
Why do they expect traditional methods should like hollywood scenes? That makes no sense. Some of them are just meant to be simple methods (e.g. rudimentary clinch from Pinan Sono Yon Kata), whereas others are unorthodox techniques which doesn't correlate with kickboxing's methodology (e.g. hand-trapping from Naihanchi Kata). They are not meant to look like something ultra fancy like the Matrix.
@user-nb2bt2fu1e Жыл бұрын
It's almost like propagandas for an agenda to "monopolize" all the fighting fundamentals, and claiming that whenever someone uses fighting fundamentals they're doing kickboxing. And that someone can only be considered as using tma only when they're doing hollywood moves nonstop. That creates two boxes for these people: kickboxing and kungfu. Whenever they see something practical that goes into the kickboxing category and whenever they see something impractical that goes into the kungfu box. Therefore a guy that claims to be doing kungfu but then have some practical moves, then "oh that's just kick boxing", "it's the kickboxing that's making it work". At the end the arrogance that goes behind the line thinking - that western kickboxing has the monopoly on fighting fundamentals (monopoly on basic human movements) is what really makes this line of thinking so obnoxious.

Who cares how his hands look. He actually landed those hits. Many with beautiful strikes tend to land less. Sometimes punching ugly is a strategy. Imho, he needs some boxing ato mix it with his Wing Chun, if he wants to be successful in boxing matches. Or just be Godlike with his Wing Chun, applying the Tan Sau and Gan Sau / Double Gan Sau perfectly to deal with round punches. He was great in first two fights greatly because he used roundhouse kicks. Using round punches with his WC would make him a beast.

it seems like the evidentiary case for wing chun is getting better and better over time. Just a year ago it wasn't clear at all to me that wing chun, in a best case scenario, could elevate someone above someone with no training at all, but with Xiao Long and a few other guys, they seem to be able to hang with, or even outperform, highly aggressive, comparably sized brawlers. We can probably say that the best wing chun fighters can at least defeat comparably sized untrained people in full resistance scenarios, although there are so few examples of this that we can't rule out outliers (in this instance, luck, or possibly "prodigies") entirely just yet. The trend is good though, and in a few years we may have a definitive case. The next interesting question is whether wing chun can hang with trained people. When we saw him up against Ninja Steve in the boxing match, we see that Steve figures out that hook punches are highly effective against wing chun, at least Xiao Long's wing chun, which makes intuitive sense. As you point out, Ninja Steve appears to be primarily a boxer (all of his fights seem to be in boxing gloves), so the contest inherently favored Steve; however, there are legions of MMA fighters, Muay Thai fighters, kickboxers, and so on that can kick very well and also throw hook punches, so I don't want to write the lessons of the fight off completely just because it was under boxing rules. It would also be interesting to see how well wing chun stances/footwork does against a submission fighter; the prevalence of submission fighters in pro-level MMA led to the near universal abandonment of the Muay Thai stance, for instance, due to its susceptibility to takedowns (also one of the reasons the teep is abandoned in modern MMA). Still, we should be as fair to wing chun as we are any other style; that wing chun might have to evolve some to handle modern threats is unsurprising, and we've seen Muay Thai, boxing, jiujitsu, and other styles do the same, and that might include a new or modified stance.

Xiao Long is very Good at use his wing chun, never see anyone use wing chun in arena that good, i think the way he practicing his wing chun is in right track, if he keep practicing he will be very good ,i really like to see his arena fights 1 or 2 year after this.

Its cool to see someone able to use wing chun in a practical/street style use. I still say theres no one style of fighting that can be used effectively in all street fights. It takes a mix of different styles to fight different individuals in open fights. Imo

Id say Wing Chun is a great discipline that teaches you how to blend striking and grappling and blend different fight ranges well also. But, I ultimately do believe a solid foundation in a single striking combat sport, like Boxing; as well as a single grappling combat sport, like Judo is necessary. Someone with great Boxing and Judo PLUS wingchun for everything else. But that is still pretty impressive that a non combat sport, that is strictly self defense oriented can be combined with Boxing and Judo and create and comprehensive fighting style. Wing Chun essentially supplements the functions of Muay Thai and even a discipline like shootboxing/sanda that focuses on blending striking with wrestling take downs all at the same time.

Not bad ! Even if he flinches a lot, and turn, he tries to resist this tendency, it will get better with experience. At least he keeps his eyes open when getting G&P. The KO was highlight reel material ^^

Xiao Long should have used more wing chun elbows in the 1st match, those are super destructive

All these guys were beginners obviously but Xiao long did pull off some sick wc moves ngl but he also looks like a fool most the times but still pretty cool to watch him and pull of front elbows to backfist

I don't think anyone has ever said any particular art cannot be used effectively or anyone who practices a particular art cannot fight effectively; the argument is that if one has the intention of learning to fight or defend themselves there are certain arts or styles which are more effective for the average person. I have no doubt that talented individuals exist who can use nearly any system effectively, but that doesn't mean I would have my wife or girlfriend wearing Wing Chun or aikido to become better at defending herself

He's obvs been taking lessons from muay thai, but the cross-overs between core strikes is pretty intimate, so it's still legit. If a pro muay thai fighter took up an ip man stance on between striking, it wouldn't look much different, though 😅

Defenetly Wing Chun hand technique. Kicks and backfists look a little bit like JDK. But from the same source.
