Rotator cuff tears are a common, with 250,000 to 300,000 arthroscopic repairs performed annually. During this surgery we sew the torn RCT back to the bone from which it tore off. These sutures are meant to hold the tendon to bone while the body actually heals this connection over the next few months after surgery. If the tendon doesn’t heal to the bone the sutures will eventually fail and the tendon repair will fail. The question is what can we do to improve the biology for the tendon to heal back to the bone? One proposed method is to inject PRP into the shoulder after surgery. What is PRP? PRP we take some of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to obtain a high concentration of platelets and growth factors, and then inject it to the repair site. In this video we review some of the scientific evidence supporting its use.
I'm Dr Edmond Cleeman, an orthopedic surgeon in New York City, specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
