Your video made me cry. My father, who was killed riding his VStrom talked about this ride for years. I was always “to busy” with jobs, kids, etc, and really didn’t want to do a long a$$ ride from Texas with him. I had a VStrom just like his in the garage that I couldn’t stand to look at after he was gone. Now years later my son has gotten me back into riding, we’ve done 3 BDR’s together and are looking forward to more. This ride, beyond the top of the world haunts me. I’ve “declared” several times that it’s “out of my system”, I’m not going to do it. It comes back to me time and time again. Need to go and say one last goodbye. Thanks for your awesome view.😎

Nice video. I’ve been up there twice on a bike and never saw a heard of caribou nor any muskox. It was 90 degrees at Atigun pass the first time. I suspect all the animals were trying to escape the heat. Lots of moose though. Thanks for sharing, this road never gets old. FYI.. my first trip up, there was no paved road above the arctic circle. It was all calcite gravel. Cheers ~GrizzLee

Very nice, relaxing video style, Thanks! 3 of us rode up to Anchorage from Chico CA. And here and there along the way clocking 7300 miles. I rode home solo after spending some time In Palmer AK helping build walls for a bush plane hanger, it was raining so hard further north it was near blinding. So we stayed in Palmer a while. Checked out the night life,etc Rained and rained and rained, Moose were nesting just off the lawn of the back yard. I headed home solo Sept 1st. It rained hard, sideways blowing rain from Palmer to Weed CA. About 6 days worth. It didnt matter after a while, its just water. Rode thru a mudslide with bouncing rocks. Slid the bike on it's side in clay on the road. Camped in rain, rode in rain. An Adventure. We took 3 weeks for the whole ride, I think open ended would be better, take a couple months and wander around more. One of my riding partners stayed longer to finish the wall building, and rode home in freezing temps, the bridges were all frozen so he had to wait a long time for them to unfreeze to ride over. Got some frostbite, got soaked in freezing rain, crashed the bike.......................The Salad Days. Sept 15th is too late to be riding out of Alaska.

Great video. A testament to the KLR. I have a 2023 Adventure and a 2015 Super Tenere. I’d much rather take the ST than the Klr on that trip but kudos to you for doing it! One question…did you do the doohickey upgrade on your bike. I see it’s currently at 35,000.
@ak.klr650
@ak.klr650 2 ай бұрын
Dont blame you for preferring the ST. The KLR gets the job done at its pace though. 😊 I'm now at 48,000 on it in real time. I haven't messed with the doohickey other than making the standard factory interval adjustments of the stock one.

Gather a decent emergency tool kit, and maybe change your next tire yourself for the kick of it. Then just ride we'll within your ability with caution where the road is rough. I think you'd probably enjoy it! I'd be happy to have company on a trip up next year, but usually don't do enough advance planning to schedule a trip someone else could make. 🤪
@Alaska_MD

@@ak.klr650 Yes, it's the tire change that worries me. The rear is tricky without a jack.
@ak.klr650
@ak.klr650 2 ай бұрын
@@Alaska_MD There's a place that makes a compact post to hold your rear tire off the ground in combination with your kick stand. I can't remember who. Maybe Happy Trails. Something like that might work. If your tires are tubeless, you probably could just carry a plug kit.

How’s conditions early June? Any hammock sites near cold foot or wiseman?
@ak.klr650
@ak.klr650 2 ай бұрын
Early June is hit or miss. @gimmtan on Instagram went up in early June and had to ride on ice over the pass. Several other guys were stuck in Prudhoe for several days waiting for the roads to clear after a late storm. By mid June, your chances would be better. End of June should be nearly reliably snow free even on the pass. There are trees along the road up to about 50 miles North of Coldfoot. You could hang a hammock anywhere along the road. The campground at the Arctic Circle actually has enough trees you could hang a hammock in a tent site easy.

It is a bit of an added expense, but Tensa Trekking Treez are very good quality poles for hanging a hammock in a treeless situation! They are purpose built for hiking AND hanging a hammock safely! Here is a look at my FIRST wild camp using them in Wyoming. I bought them because I refuse to fo to the ground in a tent nowadays! kzbin.inforQMpkUoytGE?si=YT3rLqoJnG_vqfxA

Could this trip be made on a Kawasaki Z500, and would I need special tires?
@ak.klr650
@ak.klr650 2 ай бұрын
I think you could ride it on the Z500. You may need to ride with caution depending on how those handle in dirt, but guys have been up there on Honda Groms, Harleys on occasion, 1939 Indians, and I even saw a Honda moped up there this year. For tires, something with a 50/50 tread is probably best, but I used Shinko 705s on the muddiest trip I was up there for. Not sure that you'd like straight street tires, but you might be ok if it is dry. It's hard for me to tell you for certain, because everyone seems to come back with their own opinion of that road based on their riding style and experience. And I have only got substantial ride time on dual sport bikes.

@@ak.klr650 I have a Honda CRF300L, but it's not the most comfortable thing on the highway. It's only 310 lbs. wet, so it's great on dirt roads, but it doesn't like to go more than 65 mph, and even that gets old quickly on this bike.
@ak.klr650
@ak.klr650 2 ай бұрын
@Alaska_MD There's CRF would be awesome once you got onto the Dalton. But I hear you on coming up from Anchorage. Seat Concepts might make a seat for that one that you might like. That doesn't increase your horse power though. 😂 Particularly when the road is dry, I think you could make it on either. But I don't know how the Z500 handles on dirt roads.
