I misspoke and said half a cup but meant half a box of dark brown sugar.
I know, I know. Everyone thinks prunes are for old folks, but seriously it is an awesome snack. If you cannot find the other preserved seeds on this list, you can do it with just the prunes and apricots. That is how a LOT of people do it here (because it is very expensive to buy all the other things).
2 pkg. Mariani pitted prunes, 24 oz.
1 pkg. Mariani Mediterranean apricots, 16 oz.
2-3 large pkg. wet li hing mui (a subscriber said this is also found in the Latino section as "saladitos")
2 small pkg. wet lemon peel
3/4 c. lemon juice
1/2 box dark brown sugar (I said 1/2 cup, but misspoke)
1-1/2 Tbsp. Hawaiian salt
1-1/2 Tbsp. whiskey
1/2 Tbsp. Chinese five spice
5 whole cloves
Stir ingredients together and soak for 3-5 days. Enjoy!
This is the recipe mom has used for years.
From Wikipedia:
Li hing mui is salty dried plum. It can be found in Hawaiian and Asian markets. It has a strong, distinctive flavor, and is often said to be an acquired taste, as it has a combination of sweet, sour, and salty taste. It has also been described as tart, and even tangy. Originally from China, the name "li hing mui" means "traveling plum". "Li hing" is "traveling" and "mui" is "plum."

Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo for the recipe. OMG, my grandma used to have this in her home all the time. God bless her soul. She would make them once a month in those large glass containers with the word Kapu on it. So we know not to even try to open on our own and over eat without permission. Or else! LOL I haven't had this in years since her passing and so very much looking forward to making it for my family. This actually brought tears to my eye's thinking of her. Thank You again.

I remember my mom n cousins making this when I was a little girl about 6 yrs old or so. I’m 61 now. If they weren’t doing this it would be shoyu mango or tamarind. Those were real treaty’s cause the fruits were seasonal

@CookingAndCrafting Thanks, Beth and Mom. I doubt that the crack seed shop is there anymore. They were there a long time ago when Varsity Theater was in full swing. I'll pick up some Jack Daniels and am going to try your prune mui recipe. Oh, and by the way, I believe that there were slivers of lemon peel in with the apricots, and the lemon was yellow in color (most likely fresh), not dark like the usual preserved stuff. I swear, one day I will find that recipe. Thanks!

Looks good... Wish I would have know about this so I could have picked up the ingredients yesterday in waimea... Gonna cost me a arm and a leg to buy the preserves in honokaa if I can even find them out here... I guess I gotta take another trip to waimea so I can make this! I found some really cute little christmas print chinese take out boxes yesterday at ace hardware I think im gonna put this is a little ziplock bag and then put each bag in the little take out box!

Anything with that much brown sugar in it has to be good. And I detected the label on a bottle of Jack Black that went in. That didn't hurt any, either. Looks like a really interesting snack, but how on Earth do you walk by it sitting there on the counter for 4 days and NOT dip a spoon in? :-P

This at first scared me, but when I thought about it, I was still scared! Rofl! Prunes give me the heebie jeebies! I think I have suppressed some trauma regarding prunes! After I had the baby they made me drink prune juice, but I got even! I'll keep it clean! But, if you offered me some, I'd try it!

Beth, me again. There used to be a crack seed shop next to Varsity Theater on King St. that had the best sweet & sour apricots. The sauce was clear. Do you happen to have a recipe for that in your arsenal? What kind of whiskey is your favorite for the prune mui? Sorry for the numerous questions. TIA

Very interesting I like the discription Salty, Sweet and Tangy. Those are awesome flavors together. I may see if any of these things are at the asian market they just put up. I am so excited we finally got an asian market and it is huge. Now for a job so i can buy shit. lmao!!

OK I think I can find all the ingredents for this except for maybe the wet lemon. Maybe I can make it without it? Or maybe I need to google. I got some well aged JD I think I've had it for like 4 years. I'm such a lush LOL. This would be so cool to have a taste of the island for Christmas. TFS!

Eating too much of this creates a stay put action for those who know what prunes do to you! I have no self control when it comes to eating this stuff. To make it easier for my condition, I make a fruit concoction like ripe sliced star fruit (five finger), green thinly sliced mangoes, crispy apples and/or whatever you think you like and may work for this recipe. Only need to marinate in fridge for a day since itʻs all fresh island fruits. Good chilled summertime go to. Can still make how itʻs presented here except I omit prunes and let it rip with packets of apricots (no pun intended) and dried lemon peels along with whatʻs on the recipe.
