I pruned a Japanese maple last February. I had a hard time finding a good video or photos to guide me, but followed what I could find. This video had all the same guidelines. My tree looked amazing after the pruning - it’s structure looked so beautiful without leaves and it looked great once it leafed out too.

Good Video. Rule of Thumb for Fruit Trees us to Prune during Coldest time of year. Also Fruit Tree Branches should grow at approximately 45° angle. Your pruning was good for your trees. The sap will cover and help the healing process. Plus doing in winter insects can't get into pruned area and kill. Peace Be With You ☮️

Hey! I am a certified arborist and I have to say this was a pretty good pruning intro! The only comment I have is when pruning the other leader on the first tree ("subordinating") you want to bring it back to node that can heal over. This idea is similar to the branch collar technique you pointed out. Typically you want to prune back to a lateral branch at least 1/3 the diameter of the piece you are cutting off. On such a young and vigorous tree this won't matter, just a minor detail for anyone interested! For more specific details like this, the ANSI A300 standards are a great guide

I have some type of "rose tree" in the front that has been pruned to look like a giant lollipop. I see there are several branches behind the densed ball of leaves. Can this type of tree be pruned into a topiary with several balls instead of a lollipop shape?

I know you’ve made videos in the past about tool cleaning and upkeep. I wanted to offer a recommendation on a lubricant/rust preventer and overall protectant. I was recommended to buy this when I replaced my pruning blade and it is AMAZING. I actually saw it REMOVE rust. It’s called Fluid Film and the applications are wide and varied! Think anywhere you’d maybe hear people tell you to use WD-40, use this instead. It works!

They both look great in the after. One thing to consider is that if you wait until the buds are swollen, then you can use the prunings inside in an arrangement and they will flower. I don't know if they would do that now.

Great timing, as always! I have about 7 trees that I need to do this with this year, but the rain won’t stop long enough for me to get out there and do it! 😕We have a very short cool season here in order to do this. Our trees are only dormant for a couple of months. Hopefully we will get some dry weather by this weekend and I can tackle this with confidence now! Thank y’all so much for doing this video! 🙌💚♥️

I just started tackling my overgrown plum thicket last week. I worked on it a little last winter - keeping to the 25% rule - I will do a little this winter, and a little more next winter. Hopefully shape it up to be appealing again. It was your previous fruit pruning videos you had done at your parents which inspire me to start mine. This is a great reminder! I have some older lilacs that need this opening up along with 3 old apple trees. While we let the deer 🦌 have the apples I want them to continue growing and when they bloom it’s so lovely!

You might want to mention about witches broom. If they start stripping off the ends of the tree branches they could end up with a large amount of weird growth.

Great video! I don't have any garden trees to prune, but some bonsais on a balcony and with deciduous trees there are (maybe) some good pruning tips along with Yours for garden trees too: prune the branches so they will divide from one to two- two to four and so on; with directional pruning (prune above a new bud) a branch will grow to wanted direction and thus making the branches a bit thicker, it will also encourage back budding if you want any. But all this depends on how you wan't your tree to be. If I had a garden, I'd like my fruit trees in a smaller scale, not great big and high ones. Happy new year! Cheers from Finland!

@Garden Answer You can cut to the collar so that there is no little stump sticking out. If you do not believe me , watch this year , those little stubs will have to Die back first and then start to heal , so.. it is actually harder for the tree to heal, Because of the first trying to die back and then the tree can start to look ugly with all those stumps sticking off of it. If you have a clean cut right at the collar, it just heals over like you never cut it. With my cedar tree I intentionally leave a 4 in stump when taking out branches because these trees will grow around and swallow up the cut branch and it makes for a beautiful & interesting trunk. The best way to visually find this truth is through the art of Bonsai .Japanese are brilliant in this area.. I started out thinking the way you just taught because this is what everyone was saying and teaching but if you truly watch your trees and how they react and heal to these cuts, you will soon see they are wrong. This kind of pruning is just a smaller version of what Aaron did with the willow :P lol God Bless and Happy New Year. Love all your videos
