Actually, I love Ajuga. At early spring, the area looks stunning with all the purple flowers covering the entire ground. It is your garden and you get to do whatever you like. And so do everybody else. Once your plants are all fully grown an you have a carpet of ajuga growing beautifully around them, that will look stunning. Beside, you won't be dealing with weeds. Your garden look great.

The “ajuga police” are going to get me, too 🤣 I put in 35 Blueberry Muffin and 9 Black scallop last year, and am getting 100 Blueberry Muffin plugs and 100 Chocolate Chip plugs in the mail tomorrow! Same reasoning…I HATE mulching and am so tired of it!

Ajuga and lamium make for a great groundcover combination. I'm also trying to increase my groundcovers to cut back on mulch. The groundcovers are working great to keep the weeds at bay.

The Dewalt hand Pruner is absolutely insane. Been a godsend to my life. My Ajuga 'Cordial Canary' from the Feathered Friends collection seems to be remaining tidy/contained vs. others in that series and of Choc Chips, Caitlin's Giant and Black Scallop. Cordial Canary is my fave - love the yellow foliage.

I love this ground cover it’s easily manageable and it’s does suppress weeds hold moisture and people forget how lovely the blooms are in the spring!

Hi Matthew! I loved watching you prune your Bobo Hydrangeas! ;-) I love ajuga, but grow it in pots. It's so pretty even after the blooms are done. I've never grown gladiolas and am hoping that per some comments that they will come back for you. The ones you chose, and the lily, are really pretty. Thank you so much for sharing!

We had a frost here in zone 6b in southern WV on Mon. I had planted a Magnolia Ann last week and al the leaves are falling off. I sure hope it comes back. I get your pain on the mulch! I did 50 bags in front of my home and I have 35 more to do in the back! I had to give myself a break for a few days! 😀 Love the new plants and also the wreath on your door! Have a great week!😊

I have started doing a sedum ground cover in one of my flower beds in order to have one less flower bed to add mulch. Putting it down every year is definitely time😮consuming. 😬 Yikes.

I just planted some Ajuga this year, I couldn't resist the glorious purple with white and dark green leaves with pretty purple flowers variety I found at Lowes. If it spreads free pretty plants for me!

I love my ajuga it makes a wonderful mulch. If it gets out of the area you want it in pull it up and plant it somewhere else.

I'm in Central Ohio. Gladiolus are hardy here. Had them come back year after year for 5 years. Worth a try!!!

Gladiolas are my very favourite flowers. I use to get them for my birthday in July in Europe but now in Australia July is middle of winter means no gladiola for me. Looking forward to see them blume in your garden.🎉💐

I noticed this year some of the ajuga I planted seem to have runners, so I'm thinking I can control them by clipping those runners. My other ajuga just forms clumps and this spring I dug out the outside to fill in the middle that had thinned out. So...so far, no ajuga issues. I also bought gladiolus for the first time. I'm not a fan of the tall glads but I found some "minis" and I'm hoping they stay the 20" on the package. The info on the Bobo is very timely since I just got one. It's pretty small so I'm growing it on in a container, but I hope to plant it either later this spring or wait until fall. Now I'll know how to prune it.

Glads will come back in your zone! I planted mine on the north side . Clay soil that was amended, and 6 inches deep, then mulched a couple inches. They come back every single year beautifully. But you definitely do need to stake them once full grown and blooming. Oh and I planted them probably 2 inches apart! It is a gorgeous display! Mine are about 6 inches up right now! I also follow Danielle’s channel, I just love her and she is so knowledgeable and I love her garden’s!

I’ve never liked Ajuga because the only kind I saw was what my mom had - it looked like weeds. But I think your Blueberry Ajuga is darling and I’m going to try to find some! The Gladioli look gorgeous - can you lift the bulbs for the following year or are they just spent? The Lily is gorgeous, too!

I prune my Bobo's just like you! I have 9 of them and I cut half the height and do so in late fall. They are all green now and I live near you as well. I just fertilized them a couple of weeks ago with plant tone. I have 6 on the west and 3 on the south. I don't have the puffer but it looks pretty. I'm excited to see yours take off. I love hydrangeas! I don't have ajuga but it looks very nice in mulch beds. I dislike mulching as well and do it every other year. I hired help last year. For the most part it has been a chilly spring here and I'm ready for some warmth :))

My BOBO still hasn’t budded, however my Limelight Prime and Little Limes have. I’m in zone 8a. Are BOBOs late bloomers compared to others? Planted last year

Paniculatas are later in general, but each variety will be a little different. Seems a bit late though for it to still not have buds on it in Zone 8 (assuming you’re pretty warm right now).

Ialso think ajuga is great! Funny thing is I think the 2 varieties I have(1 dark leaf and 1 variegated leaf) both appear more green this yr. Could be my imagination but do they revert to green over time? I’ve had them for almost 10yrs.

I'm not sure! But, if the variety you have produces seeds it's possible that the seedlings would naturally vary and what you could have is a child of the original parent plant or some cross pollination between your varieties. :)

Which hydrangea would you recommend for a zone 7b, sunny location, 3-4 feet tall and wide. Something pink in color. Thank you Matthew.

If it's full sun, you're probably going to want to stick to a hydrangea paniculata and they're not really going to be "pink", but the blooms can age to pink (Little Quick Fire, Bobo, Puffer Fish, Little Lime Punch). I would not put hydrangea arborescens in full sun (for example Incrediball Blush or Invincibelle Ruby). Some of them are rated and state they can take full sun, but I think they would just burn and look awful unless you were pouring water on them constantly. Hydrangea macrophylla definitely doesn't want full sun or it will be wilting and burning on you. Hydrangea macrophylla is the only one you may get truly pink blooms with (depending on your soil pH). Hydrangea serrata may also be an option. Many change bloom color with soil pH like macrophylla, but they probably would not like the full sun either.
