Great video, but I have a question. I have just finished my spring harvest and one of my patches seems quite full, can you prune now, and thin out before the fall harvest? They seem very thick, I was thinking air flow is important?
@OurSanctuaryGarden Жыл бұрын
I know of some people who prune in the late summer. You can try it and see what happens. I don’t think it will hurt the raspberries. Creating more airflow is important

My goodness, a MASSIVE thumbs up for this video! Your explanations were clear, concise, and so well presented...can't thank you enough for the information! Late March 2022 I popped in 3 bare root Heritage raspberry plants (1 didn't make it), and after observing last year's growth of the new primocanes (no fruit, unfortunately, but hopefully that just means they were spending their energy building a strong root system) I was hoping to better understand what was going to happen this season. Thanks to you, now I do! Keep up the incredible work!

I have raspberries growing at home that are thornless but the ones that were already on my allotment plot are very thorny. The thorny ones seem to produce more raspberries but the taste is still the same. Have the thornless ones been bred that way?

Just found your channel and subscribed. Third year of everbearing raspberries. First year planted in mid June had some berries in the fall, last year had a some in spring(did not prune) and a huge crop in the fall. Mid march in zone 5 and I need to trim up my berries. Looked at other videos on this subject and most were completely confusing. Your video was just what I was looking for, plus nice humor "are you eating dirt?" love it. Know, I think I know what I am doing? My trellising last year was terrible, I used twine off of a couple T-Posts at either end of the bed. I had canes all over the place, a real mess. We have those lovely Japanese beetles here and I had to cover with netting, on occasion I would have to let a bird out. I will be setting up a trellis system like yours when the soil thaws. but for now I will enjoy trimming. Need to get out of the grow room. Thanks again, really appreciate your expertise. I have a video on KZbin of my messy raspberries from last Aug. " Brian Seybert Garden Tour " if you are interested.

Hi Brian! I’m so happy you found this helpful! It took me a few years to figure out my system and now I’m really happy with it so I hope you’ll have just as much success with it as I have. I enjoyed your garden tour video! Very impressive garden! Cheers
@brianseybert21892 жыл бұрын
@@OurSanctuaryGarden Quick question? When I pruned the floricanes I noticed quite a few lateral branches that had buds below the last falls crop. I trimmed off the part of the laterals that produced last year and left the laterals on the main cane. Question is, should I completely trim off these lateral branches? My soil is still frozen so I have to wait to install my new trellis system (like yours). I was going to see how these laterals would fit when I wired up the floricanes. I'm thinking for air flow purposes it might just be better to eliminate the laterals all together. I did notice all of your canes did not have any lateral branches. Thanks for taking a look at my garden video. Making a lot of changes this year, enjoy experimenting and trying to make things a bit better each year.
@OurSanctuaryGarden2 жыл бұрын
@@brianseybert2189 hmmm... are you sure they're everbearing? Maybe they're summer/june bearing. I think what you did is fine, I wouldn't worry about pruning the laterals. Just thin out your row enough to allow proper airflow. See what your raspberries do this year and you can always modify next pruning season.
@brianseybert21892 жыл бұрын
@@OurSanctuaryGarden For sure they are everbearing. I will do as you suggest and prune accordingly for airflow. Appreciate you responding. Thank You, and have a wonderful growing season!

I used to have a lot of Japanese beetles on my raspberries too. They were mating right at the harvest time. I felt pretty gross when they crawled on my fingers as I picked the raspberries. About 5 years ago, I read a lot of information about them and learned that they lay eggs in the grass. I started applying beneficial nematodes to my lawn to kill their grubs. You can buy them at a better garden centres or at amazon. If you carefully follow the instructions on the package, you will greatly reduce the population of the Japanese beetles on your raspberries and your lawn will look a lot healthier too. I have been applying them in the spring and also at the end of summer.
