KZbin is adding a new automatic Auto-Dubbing feature when a new video is uploaded. I made a video showing the 2 main types of pruning cuts that you need to learn to keep your fruit trees healthy and productive to test this new feature. I'm afraid that, with the more technical language these videos have, the auto-dubbing will be in most cases funny and in others just annoying. If you use this feature let me know what you think. I would much rather have the option to include my own voice over using the multi-audio track option others channels have access to. I could do it in Portuguese, Spanish and French besides English, and it would probably be more accurate regarding technical terms but, unfortunately, I don't have access to this feature. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to help the channel grow. Share the video and leave a comment. I will try to answer as many questions as I can. Thanks for watching. I'm using a store bought one (brand Arbokol - a synthetic resin). I don't know if its available outside my area, but most commercial pruning pastes are fine. Just avoid the tar based ones. If you want to make your own, you can do it easily. Just mix oil (like, olive oil) with grated bees wax (for instance, from a candle made of beewax). Melt the wax inside the oil using vapor (use a double boiler). Add a few drops of an essential oil (like, tea tree oil) to act as an antiseptic. The paste will be solid at room temperature, like a shoe polish. For a softer paste, use more oil (1 part wax to 2 parts oil will be softer). The web is filled with different recipes using different oil, wax mixtures (canola oil, linseed oil, paraffin wax, etc.). I promised to do a video about it a couple of years ago, but I got side stepped and never got to do it.

I sure wish my pear trees looked like yours. This was our first year here, and every pear tree branch grows straight up. I did my best with a winter pruning last year to remove the old growth like that. But, still, all the new branches turned straight up immediately after they appeared.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
Creating an open vase in pear takes patience and several years. You can also do some summer pruning to control excessive regrowth, always pruning to an outside facing bud to open the tree. Forcing some branches in a more horizontal position, by tying them down, can also help. Or you can decide to use the Central Leader shape (much easier to do, with the tendency of vertical growth that pears have).

I used some old footage to make this video to test the auto-dubbing feature. Newer pruning videos, like this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIHck4NqfZyfjbssi=0YZYm19PT0Zdb6Yo&t=404 have more camera angles and even a few top angles (hand held). In a fig tree pruning video I even tried a top view from a drone to show before and after, but the quality of the footage was not great. I might try that again the next time I prune my trees (next month).

@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
Vertical growing shoots are usually all removed. When talking about grafts that grow vigorously, they should be headed at the desired height, so new branches can grow from the buds below the cut. When multiple branches grow from the graft and you want to control vigor, prune to a weak side branch as I show in the video. Check my video on "Summer Pruning your Grafts" for a few more tips and examples - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5SyqJejnpt3f68

That branch was growing towards the space between the rows of trees. If left unpruned it would, eventually, start blocking the passage for tractors and other machinery. If the tree was planted on a backyard orchard, I would probably leave the branch untouched.

Thank you kinldly for this video once again. My mother has some very old peach trees that were neglected from a very young age. When she purchased the place some people tried to prune them a bit, but did it wrong. She has always had very long branches with around 6m growth in a season, which makes the tree almost impossible to net from birds. Wanting to cut back her trees to a manageable size, this year I heavily pruned one of the trees in early spring, after good sap flow had started. I took it back to 3 branch stumps and it had now grown for around 4 months. I have pruned again, clearing the shoots I did not want and I am fanning the tress with rope to try and give it the shape that is suitable for reaching fruit next season. I am concerned that they will carry too much fruit and snap at the unions. When do I cut these branches off shorter, end of summer / autumn when dormant, prior to dormancy, or next spring? If it tries to grow too vigorously I will need to sincture it next spring. Any tips of times to prune for various trees would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Unless you are doing the same repetitive task, bench grafting hundreds of plants, all of the same diameter, those tools don't adapt well to the different situations we face, when grafting on our orchard. What rootstocks do you use on your smaller sized pear trees?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
Most pear trees were bought in local nurseries and they tend to buy from producers that graft in selected cultivars of quince. These have medium compatibility with most common pear cultivars and some can reduce vigor to half compared to using seedlings of Pyrus sp. as rootstocks. Although most of the older trees I have bought didn't mentioned the cultivar, they probably are grafted in BA-29 type quince, since its one of the fewest quince rootstocks that resist root asphyxiation - one of the problems of planting in clay soils, like I have. Other trees don't do so well, in m y soil, so they are probably grafted in other quince selections (like Sydo or EMC, that produce smaller trees).

@geologotejano Hello, thanks for the reply. This past spring, i grafted a bunch of apple scions onto a Pacific crabapple tree (aka swamp crab). I'm a rookie grafter, so not all survived, but many did and I am shocked by how well the graft healed and some scions grew about 3.5 feet!!! The swamp crab trees im grafting onto are mature trees im guessing 25 years old ish. I cut the swamp crabs back by 50-80% and the one I cut back about 80% I thought was going to kill it. Nope, the scions are thriving to say the least. Incredible. I have another large order of scions waiting for next spring to continue the swamp Crabapple grafting project.

Be careful with vase / open centre tree structure. It can cause sun scold on the main branches. And in very fertile soil like loam, the regrowth can be significant (50cm - 1m sprouts in 1 year) and you will have to prune a lot.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. I understand these are known issues but, regarding sun scold, I'm not affect as, in my area, the sun intensity is quite low. Also, my soil type is far from fertile. A technique used to control sprouts is leaving a weak nursing branch at the end of each main scaffold when pruning. That tends to reduce the vigor of new sprouts a bit. Open Center trees are quite common over here in home orchards, although in intensive commercial orchards they prefer the tall spindle shape or even slender or super spindle (with more than 4000 trees/ha grafted in dwarfing quince types).

Intensive orchards where trees are trained in thin hedgerows already use mechanized pruning by topping and hedging using sickle-bar or saw-bar tractor implements. It's used in olives, almonds, citrus and even vineyards (for summer pruning). For the time being, the human touch is still needed in most cases. Unfortunately, I don't think the price will be affected by the use of more automated options.

I watched the German auto-dubbed version to check it for accuracy and quality of the dub and it's..decent? Actually?
