Great to see Bushido Blade and Bloody Roar in their rightful positions. Tekken really blew my mind having such a range of martial arts styles. Having TKD characters at the same time I was studying it was too much fun. VF2 remains my favourite fighting game of the era however. There was loads of bad but entertaining jank I rented during that era as well. Shout out Psychic Force, War Gods and Criticom.

Dave Dogge Thats because the original arcade hardware Tekken ran on was based on the Ps1 hardware. A bit sad on Namco's part really not even trying to compete with Sega's model 2 arcade Machines but Sega were head and shoulders above everybody in the arcades at the time so fair enough i guess!

Tekken 1 & 2 were arcade-perfect ports from System 11 with more additions, but Tekken 3 arcade used newer hardware (System 12) and had to e toned down for PS1, 3D stages turned into pre-rendered 2D backgrounds, poly count lowered, hands simplified etc.

Great video! I know it’s not a popular choice, but mine is hands down Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha. I’ve played that more than any other PlayStation game.
@noneofyourbiz59736 жыл бұрын
Streef Fighter EX - the Japanese NTSC version is so much faster than the PAL version, that it's almost like a completely different game. Bushido Blade is a good number 1 choice. My choice goes to Rival Schools 2 on the PS1 (Shiritsu Justice Gakuen: Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2) which had 2 extra characters. It was a Japanese release only and once again - plays far quicker than it's PAL cousin.

Great list! I'm a big fan of PS1 fighters myself and I have to say your list is very solid. I've got a soft spot for Guilty Gear myself. Psychic Force was an interesting game but I don't think that would make my top 10 either, as was Star Gladiator although I prefer Plasma Sword on Dreamcast. Street Fighter EX 2 Plus is better than the original, did you give that a go? As good as Alpha 3 is I think I'd have to choose Capcom vs. SNK Pro but that's just personal preference. I didn't see Bushido Blade coming in as no.1, that was a surprise! As a side note, Ehrgeiz was released in Europe, I used to have a copy but sold it as it really isn't all that great.

Bushido Blade is correct. Such tension. They took that moment that comes up occasionally in every fighting game where the next unblocked attack by either player decides the match and made an entire game out of it. Genius in its simplicity when you consider it that way.

Bushido Blade is such a classic. A friend of mine actually had the patience to play the game properly, and we would have these long 10- to 15-minute matches. Great memories. I fell out of Tekken after Tekken 2 but have since really gotten into Tekken 7, so I should go back and give the third a try. I also prefer Alpha 2 to Alpha 3 in terms of roster and balance (ignore custom combos), but a solid list nonetheless!

Really cool list;) Bushido Blade as No. 1 Was surprising. Have really played that game a lot. Just sad that there has never been a new one for the new consoles. Rival Schools, I love that game. I do not understand why CAPCOM is not starting to make a new Rival Schools and Darkstalkers game. Instead of going on and on with their Street Fighter games. which I have been tired of since the second edition of SF4. Also good to see Evil Zone. The only thing I probably do not completely agree with you, is Soul Blade as No. 6. I personally want to place it higher, But this is your list and a very interesting list I think :)

I played Ehrgeiz earlier this year. It was definitely better than people usually say it is. The free-roaming 3d movement makes it harder than usual to target, but I thought it was balanced well enough. Cloud for one needs space to draw his sword and you can easily not allow it. He was the first character I tried naturally. The graphics were good, and frame rate high. Now that I've tried Soul Blade I wish they could have pushed 60 fps on that game. Sophitia is pretty cute, but her winning quotes are hard to endure. She has my favourite screams though, so playing with her I get a kick out of even losing.

@lightsonno1home3116 жыл бұрын
I know it's not technically what anyone in their right mind would call a good game but I absolutely LOVE Evil Zone. It's absolutely, ridiculously over the top in every possible way. The moves are insane, the plot's are ridiculous, and the acting is deliberately hammed up to the max because anything less just wouldn't do. And there is a lot of it, each character has their own story mode which takes the form of their unique anime style series where each fight is set up like an episode, with a long FMA sequence before and after each fight. The combat isn't quite as shallow as it first appears either. Its all about out manoeuvring your opponent to create the space you need to power up, or use your most powerful moves.
@samuelvictor99586 жыл бұрын
Kim, this is probably the best possible video on PSX fighters, I concur with everything you said! Except possibly Toshinden 1 being ugly - was possibly the best looking launch title. Played crap compared to Tekken though. You are of course spot on about 2d fighters on Saturn - as for 3D, if you've not played it, the Saturn DOA is well worth importing. Very different to PS version, both are very good in their own way...

Ehrgeiz actually received a PAL release after numerous delays in April 2000. I got my copy in HMV Dublin at the time but it was the only one in the shop, with neither the likes of GAME or EB stocking it elsewhere. Also, I think Marvel Super Heroes is worthy of mention in any PS1 fighter Top Ten, simply for the fact that it received a port at all. Compared to the Saturn version, there is very little difference in terms of animation or loading times and as a technical achievement on a system notorious for downgraded CPS2 ports outside of the Alpha series, it is deserving of note. It's a fun game too! Also, KOF '95 received a very limited release in PAL territories and while it doesn't compare as favourably to its Saturn counterpart as some Capcom ports, with smaller sprites and reduced animation, it's still a competent port of a Neo Geo title - an accolade that many reserved for either SNK or Sega home systems back in the day.

Ahh, Tekken 3. Where did 20 years go? I have nothing deep or meaningful to add, other than being rather young at the time and posessing a juvenile sense of humour we used to refer to Yoshimitsu as "Messy Shih Tzu" (with emphasis on the appropriate syllable of course) for some reason I can't remember. Tekken 3 nights seemed to coincide with attempts to kill each other in the real world with a competition to create the world's hottest chilli con carne. Don't get me started on Eddy "Fuckin'" Gordo - the button masher's/noob's delight. Thanks for the video, I now wish I was at home playing games and buckling over in capsaicin induced pain instead of being at work :)

Personally I preferred Bloody Roar 1 over it's sequel, I remember all the unlockables you could get in it too, I never did get them all. As for Bushido Blade I liked the sequel more as well. However it's a little unfair to why I do - as BB2 is import only it ran at full speed. My BB1 copy is PAL and horrendously slow in comparison. Add the fact BB2 has Tsubame with an M16 for hilarious gun duels and I just found it better. I would be interested to play BB1 at it's authentic speed however. Tekken 5 to me is the best entry in the series, Tekken 3 however is great in that there is no doubt.
