The PSOne era will forever be burned in my mind as the wild west of console gaming. Developers creativity blossomed and the market was *filled* with people hungry for unique games. Some silly, some pretty broken, but most were legends. MGS showed that games could be cinematic, FF7 showed that games could be deep, Tekken proved that the arcades are now located in your own home. It felt as if every month new ground was being broken, one after the other.

I disagree with this assumption with what you're saying here as MGS showed that games can be stylishly cinematic AND deep entirely as MGS IS a very deep game with it's own themes to it all for the characters.

Fun fact: Tommy Tallerico probably didn't write that James Bond song. It has come out recently that he hired a lot of ghost writers under his company and then took credit for the music or sound effect.

Ah, Alundra! The most brilliant zelda clone ever, with much deeper tones about humanity and equally awesome gameplay. This game absorbed my teen days. Back in the day this game was impossible for me to complete. I had to rent it from my local video store multiple times to actually complete it. Had to follow a magazine guide to complete it. It's a tough game which won't hold your hand but a very satisfying experience overall. Thank you DidYouKnowGaming for reminding me this gem exists. I may play it again soon!

Happy to see Alundra get a mention and even happier to see people commenting about it. The whole 'Zelda clone' aspect is only skin deep, as you get into the story you start to realize-and appreciate-where it and Zelda differs. Yes they share a few mechanics here and there, but most of them are standard RPG tropes of the era.

Yeah, I get that it's a convenient shorthand to describe the gameplay. But it also feels kinda dismissive. Like calling it a rip-off or a wannabe or something.
@g0ggles1994
@g0ggles1994 2 жыл бұрын
@@nanoglitch6693 Agreed. I wonder how many more copies would have sold if reviewers didn't constantly call it a Zelda clone for easy headlines. There again, some sources claim that Working Designs deliberately kept the print numbers low so there wouldn't be excess copies and Psygnosis did the same here in Europe, so sales may not have been affected that dramatically in the long run.

Metal Gear Solid changed the way I saw video games forever. It was the first time I was hooked so much on a game's story that I repeatedly finished the game (also because I could rarely afford new games). I really got lucky in obtaining MGS without any knowledge of how great it could be.

Id most likely be dead if it wasn't for games. I know people talk shit on people that say stuff like that,but whatever. Was always like a safety net. Can hide and play your game and be somewhere else. Just sucks,as you get older,at least personally,you can't get into it like you used to. When I was a young kid,I'd feel like I was the character. Now I'm lucky if I can forget its a game for even a second. I also realize how precious time is,and have OCD,so I basically ruin the games for myself,being so quick and methodical about doing and seeing everything. I hated Death Stranding by the time I had the Platinum. I'd have said it was one of the best games ever made,and I'll never play it again because of that run. But I agree with you. It's been really interesting seeing the things I got made fun of for as a kid getting more and more acceptable. I used to get clowned on because Captain America was my favorite and "he didn't have any powers" and whatever else. Imagine my surprise when the movies came out,and there were cheerleaders and everything else wearing his logo,that couldn't even tell you his real name,or one person that ever drew him ha. PlayStation especially has it's own...style? I'm not even sure what to call it. More like an atmosphere,or attitude. Some of the memories from the games are more fun that ones I have "in real life". I remember renting Final Fantasy VII, getting to the first boss and begging my mom to go and buy it lol. I had nothing but an NES up until then,so I was just shocked that wasn't the end of the game lmao.

They would be 'heroes' if they weren't so keen on going full blown dumb with their localisations. Sex jokes, weed jokes and whatnot. Funny enough, the most overpowered weapon in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a shield. You used either the shield rod or mablung sword in combination with Alucard's shield, and it powers the shield up to ridiculous levels. One, when it's out, anything it hits creates hearts for the sub-weapon, absorbs HP, and does very high damage, all with very rapid attack. It does drain magic when it's out, since you can almost literally walk through enemies and kill bosses in very rapid order, including the final boss, it's super overpowered.
