Thank you, Mr. Anderson. This video will summarize the concept on energy which some of my students may have missed or need to be reminded to learn their current standard on 'Energy'. Keep up the good work!

"We have no knowledge of what energy is..." is one of the most honest answers I have found thus far. Everything else here describes the 'function' of energy. The term "IS" is key here... and to be frank, I would settle for a real definition of the word 'IS' which is also mind numbingly difficult to discern.

"The energy entering a system is equal to the energy leaving the system." Not quite right as a statement of the law of conservation of energy. There can be sources and sinks of energy, for sure. The sun is a source of energy - not because it is "creating" energy, but because the binding energy in its atoms is converted into other forms of energy (kinetic, electromagnetic). But the sun as a system is absolutely losing energy! The law of conservation of energy just tells us that any energy leaving the sun doesn't just cease to exist, but travels through space until it is, perhaps, absorbed somewhere else. Tiniest fix to a great video!

@Bozeman science. Which category is Thermal energy, electrical, nuclear and chemical energy fit in. In the three categories mentioned. Thank you Also would light not be an energy as light contain Photons and where would you put light energy in your category. Your help appreciated.

Where does elastic energy of a sprng or bungee cord fall into these three energy categories?
@gaeb-hd4lf
@gaeb-hd4lf 7 жыл бұрын
I would say due to motion, because when a spring is compressed the particles/atoms and/or molecules starts moving faster due to stronger attractive/repulsive forces.

The bungee cord has high potential energy when it is all stretched out. Just like a ball at the top of the ramp, where there are forces ready to set it in motion, the molecules in the cord are pulling each other together (chemical bonds, so it's an electrical force), and will be converted back into kinetic energy as it returns to its normal length. Some of the energy is converted to heat inside the cord, so a person won't bounce back and forth forever.

"Sound is not energy it has the ability to transfer energy from place to place" The video was very helpful in terms of thinking about energy, but this concept still confuses me. So if the sound isn't the energy what is?
@gaeb-hd4lf
@gaeb-hd4lf 7 жыл бұрын
Sound is a wave of air pressure, and a wave is simply the periodical variation of a certain parameter in function of time and position. In the case of sound it would be P(x,y,z,t) where P is air pressure. That being said, when someone (or something) emits a sound, the energy used to emit it is transfered to the air by changing the air pressure according to its wave function. Think of it as moving a rope: the energy you used to move your arm its transfered to the rope by making it move like a wave and the person holding the rope at the other end will eventually receive that (almost) exact energy when the wave "gets there".

Fundamentally speaking Energy is a concept. Not an object. In PBS Spacetime's video on Energy the host gave a good definition: "Energy is a number... A quantity..." (the quantity is) "a mathematical relationship between other more fundamental qualities." Pythagoras said that "All is Number". When you realize that Energy is not actually an object in it of itself but that it's also the foundation of everything we perceive as real you come to the truth that we don't live in a materialistic universe. This wont sit well with you if you're an Atheist. It didn't for me when i was one. I denied these things for a while. Keep asking questions like "What is Energy?". It will lead you to the Truth.

Energy is a concept... how a concept can be transferred? which is the definition of mass and energy and place and motion.... difficult also to understand what is an object. a field is a concept, it is just numbers...

I had to find some scientific based video to scrape the woo woo off.

well, no, no this was not helpful at all.... What is Energy? ... i know you can weigh it.... a coiled spring weighs more than a spring without tension.... so what is it? ... is it MASS in some other form? .... what about E=MC2???? ....seems to me to be Energy somehow is related to Mass.... but what is it? .... is there an energy particle? .... is it possible to have nothing but energy in a space? .... a vacuum with ONLY energy and nothing else? ..... what is it?
@timb8549
@timb8549 6 жыл бұрын
1) place a spring without tension and a bunch of tape on a scale. 2) compress the spring and tape it up with the exact same tape and find the weight again. I think you're looking at the same weight. Yes, if you push down on the spring to hold it in place, it will give you a higher reading, but that's nothing Einstein would have to cover - it's just how scales work.
