Thanks Andrew for your extremely helpful video. Your instructions enabled me to give life to a PS4 that would otherwise have been chucked out and wasted. Anticipating that I'd probably screw it up, I bought 3 of these modules to have a go at fixing a bluetooth controller non-sync issue on by PS4 model CUH-12XX. After many days and countless hours spent at this I managed to destroy 2 of the chips in the process of trying to reflow them to the motherboard (I am a soldering noob) but I struck lucky on the third attempt. I just used a heat gun at 480 degrees as Andrew described, I don't own a PCB preheater. Tip - for anyone attempting this using a heat gun use good quality solder - I had major issues getting the solder to flow properly once the chip was in place, which I think was down to using cheap solder. Make sure the solder balls on each pad on the chip are evenly sized and that there is no excess solder on any of the pads - this also will cause issues if the amounts on the pads are uneven .Use plenty of flux, and make sure that the chip is firmly sat down onto the motherboard on all sides after applying heat - if you can see any space between the chip and the board, don't be tempted to chance it and power it up to check if it works - it won't. Believe me. Also, if you make a mistake and need to take the chip off again be VERY careful when removing it not to move the top metal plate. This is soldered on top of the chip and moving it while hot will dislodge the transistors inside the chip and create a hopeless mess, rendering it useless. Again, believe me, this happened. Have patience and faith and if it doesn't work after a few attempts, keep trying! Getting this to work was the most satisfying electronic fix I've ever experienced. The learning process was most valuable.

When putting new chip on, he applied heat for about 1 minute from roughly 21:30 to 22:30. The chip sinks down at 22:00 to 22:01.

That means I think there is a faulty controller chip and or bluetooth on the controller pcb(motherboard)or of course a fault on the controller motherboard. I got the same problem - but weirdly both ones that dont connect at all both connect to pc using ds4 programme and a usb lead - although neither connect via blue tooth - or go into bluetooth establish connection mode when you press share and PS button simultaneously. this is an old post but does your one go into connection mode when share and ps pressed together? this is as far as I can get in understanding what the problem is, but its obviously something on the motherboard that fails after time either the black ARM controller chip on the silver wireless bluetooth chip. I was also looking at acid mods for discussion and problem resolution but no luck.

Is there a way of diagnosing whether it is the WiFi Bluetooth antenna, module or a result of flash corruption without just trying the different fixes? For example, if the controller works in safe mode, does this rule out the possibility of flash corruption? I am having the exact same issue as you - controller works in safe mode but not in OS mode and have tried every possible solution before resorting to hardware stuff. Initially WiFi was the problem, then a few days later controllers stopped connecting. Do you think it would be worth by first trying to replace the antenna? I would prefer to try replacing the antenna first because it's probably simplest and cheapest; replacing the module and dealing with flash corruption seems more complicated with a higher risk of messing it up.

No glue - paste is called flux which is used to aid the soldering process. You solder it back in place with a bottom heater and hot air from the top to reflow the solder beneath the new module. If the ones from eBay come pre-balled then you should be able to straight install them otherwise you'll need to do as per the video and ball them yourself before refitting the new module.

Hi If you've said in 1200 it must be same model and revision does it mean taht if I had bluetooth module DHSM-PS97 it can'be replaced with AW-NB218-2-22180-B1H ???

I have motherboard sac 001 and replaced chip but now can't sync or find any wifi. Are the modules I mentioned compatible for al 1216a ? Thank you
@AndrewPaul4 жыл бұрын
These days as long as the installed firmware is above v4.0, module types can now be swapped between the different models for 1200 PS4s, i.e. DHSM > AW-NB218 and vise-versa.

Hi there great video , I've re soldered the antennae wires and will work for about 2-3 minutes then controllers lag out and disconnect I've changed the batteries and I had the HDMI port resoldered on had problems since then. Bad Bluetooth chip ?

Hi there, thanks for the info. i tried all the possible ways ps support could help me with over the phone. but at the end the controllers didnt connect. in safe mode i tried the options 3-4-5 and then for last tried was the option 7. help!
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Chances are you've got either a defective module as in the video or firmware corruption of the bluetooth stack. Both are fixable - if you've got a good indy console repair place local they should be able to sort it out.

Great video. I too have the same issue where my 2nd controller can connect to the console initially but always disconnects after a certain time(few minutes). The original controller seems to have normal connectivity otherwise! Any advice would be appreciated. Max
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a controller issue rather than a console one. For what they're worth I'd just replace the controller.

Hi Andrew, I have a question about a PS4 (CUH-1216A) with bluetooth module problems. Checked NOR chip and there was no corruption. I reballed the bluetooth module before (DHSM-PS97), but the problem return after a short time. So the bluetooth module needs replacement, but I only have the reballed modules AW-NB218 version 1.0 , 1.1 and 1.2. Can the module just be replaced and if yes, which version is the best to take ?
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes since v4.0 they've thankfully been interchangeable between the DHSM and AW-NB218 modules. To be honest I don't think there's much between the AW-NB218 modules but I'd say the later the revision you can get the better.

All scrap boards so I don't know which system update they are running (they will all be 3.15 or higher). AW-NB218 Rev 1.1 - Size: 434,871 bytes AW-NB218 Rev 1.2 - Size: 431,614 bytes DHSM-PS97 - Size: 431,614 bytes - Identical to AW-NB218 Rev 1.2 Just installed the 1.2 version, mobo is cooling down now on my rework machine.
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's from the days prior to v4.0 and is the reason they couldn't be interchanged (even AW-NB218s of differing revisions), because the different section sizes would upset the SLB2 container if modified / changed in any way.
@proconsoles_nl7 жыл бұрын
Aha, just replaced the DHSM by AW-NB218 rev. 1.2 and it works :-) Do you use a hot air station or your rework station, to desolder/solder the bluetooth modules ?
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Excellent news! I use the bottom plate for pre-heat and do the rest with the air wand.

Yes, the card is soldered into position on the motherboard.

Andrew Paul thank you for answered. How can I desolder (i'm sorry for the probably mistake) this and where can I find the material in Reunion Island please
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
To remove it you can use either a BGA Rework station, or as I do - a bottom pre-heating plate (I just use the bottom heater of the Jovy RE-8500 for this purpose) and hot air. You'll struggle to remove it without the bottom heat applied as it's heavily tied to ground which pulls a lot of heat away into the board. The ICs themselves can be had on eBay / AliExpress or removed from a donor board. I'm going to look to stock these parts on my webshop when I get it up and running in the near future.

andrew do i have to change something else besides the chip? do i have to get to pc and comand prop?
@AndrewPaul4 жыл бұрын
If the module itself is physically defective then no, a straight swap with a new module should be enough to get it all back up and running.

@@AndrewPaul after i swap the chip and put new solder in do i have to put it in the same position as the faulty one/?
@AndrewPaul4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes - it can only go on one way as the layout of the solder pads is asymmetrical so shouldn't be possible to get it the wrong way around. Once you've removed the old chip, reball the new one then install it into the same position as the old one. Providing you do it correctly, it should work.

Can someone help plz ! My ps4 controller keeps flashing white when I press the home button but only connects when the controller is right on the front of the ps4 ! Today I got a brand new controller thinking that is gonna work perfectly but the same problem! Is anything wrong with the ps4 or?? Should I open it up myself or send it to a specialist??
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
Could be the antenna at fault. Check it's connected below the PSU and the cable hasn't become detached from the metal plate at the front. if all that looks good then yes it's going to need some professional attention.

Hello Andrew. I have the same problem...I just wondered how could you recognize the problem, Bluetooth module or firmware?
@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
You should always check the firmware first as it's quicker, easier and much kinder on the hardware. Afterall, there's no point in replacing a module requiring some fairly major surgery if the module itself isn't faulty. Sadly there's no outwards way to check - you just have to follow the procedure to arrive at the eventual solution.

Hi, There can be several causes for the issue ranging from a defective module through to firmware corruption which has an effect on price, but if you are in the UK or EU, drop me an email on my business address - ytandrewpaul@outlook.com with your location etc and we can get some prices together for you. Cheers.

Andrew do I need to clean the old solder off the board before putting on a new bluetooth module?

sorry for asking so many questions...but do I need to reball solder on the board too or just the module?
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
No worries - Just the module itself. Make sure the balls are of relatively equal size then you won't get any issues when it comes to rejoining the new module to the motherboard.

Hi. My DS4 doesn't sync or connect with the PS4 when I start it up normally, but it does work when I boot the PS4 on safe mode with the USB connected. My second controller doesn't have any connectivity issues and works fine wirelessly on normal mode. Do you know what might be the issue? My broken controller works fine with a USB cable on my PC and PS3.
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Its a controller fault. For what they cost, just replace the controller.

Nice video mate! I have a question. Was the chip faulty or was it a thermal paste/solder problem? I ask that because if i can just reset the chip, I don't have to wait 3 weeks for a replacement from China! :)

+Mike Wellz sometimes a reflow of the chip will do - nothing to lose by trying :-)
