Technically its not "over heating" it just has a sensor that checks the fan and temperature of the unit but then it notices the fan isn't even turned on so it shuts down immediately to prevent damage.

I had the same issue with mine during the first 4 minutes of setup. I put a fan behind it to try and cool it down happened several more times, felt behind the console and didn't feel any warm air coming out. I was getting desperate and just wanted to play a game. I placed the console upright and viola. The fan inside the console started running. Idk if it was luck or what, but knock on wood everything is working flawlessly now. Happy I bought an extended warranty just in case.

Fernan Gomez the .4% statistic is not accurate and was labelled a estimate, with the actual statistic as reported by retailers being closer to 20%, there are far more reports of DOA playstation 4's then there is Xbox one's with the Xbox One currently having higher sale figures. If this stays very common halfway through the PS4's life cycle like the original red ring of death did for the 360, then it doesn't get to keep it's pass. The Xbone will get the same pass if it's just scarce cases in the launch week.

Your system must've overheated. Just make sure you leave it in an open area so it has a lot of space and air to cool off (also when you play). Don't play more than 3 hours a day on your PS4, also take a 1 hour break if you are planning to play more. Just do this and you'll never have a problem with your PS4 again.

I have had the same problem, right out of the box on 29st november. Just tilt your ps4 vertical a few times. Worked for me, fans are working perfect since i did that so it doesn't mean your ps4 is DOA :)

Red ring of death: Overheated. Temporally fix: Move your ps4 as far back as possible from a wall or something that can block airflow. The fans are in the back so move the back of your ps4 up to a fan you plug in to the wall. In the mean time call sony for support. Hope this helps :)

Biggest mistake is to stash the PS4 in a place where it can't "breathe". I have the same problem with placement, I can't put it inside the cabinet I have, it needs to vent outside before it overheats and melts.

My PS4 slim froze after my game crashed as I was using the vr headset. Once it crashed, everything just stopped, and when I turned it off, I saw my VR game on the TV screen, completely frozen I'm not sure what happened.

That`s a sign of overheating. Let it be for awhile. Also, I use the verticle stand. Hot air rises, so its best to have it vert, pkus it looks way cooler. I know for a fact my ps3 slim would be roasted if it was horizontal, because the last time I used it horizontal, it was so hot I could fry an egg on it.

+Keksdose2k yeah man my ps4 broke down like 6 months ago the fan gave out so it overheated and gave me the red light so I bought a new fan and thermal paste. I opened it up switched the fan and applied a little drop of thermal paste to the processor then put it back together and it worked like it was new I haven't had any problems recently so it's working fine but just to be safe I bought an attachment for my ps4 that plugs to the back and has 2 little fans so now it won't overheat at all oh and put your ps4 in an open space so it could breathe

I think people need to download the 1.5 firmware update to a thumb drive first. Then install it onto the PS4 that way. I'm getting a 1TB Sata II drive and will get the firmware update off the website. Don't let the PS4 autoupdate the PS4 with their online 1.5 firmware update. It seems to be gimping some of the PS4's.

Theres rumours going around that some foxconn emloyees (the guys that assemble the ps4's) had been sabotaging some of the consoles to send a message to sony about their working conditoins, if you pre ordered from amazon then your ps4 is more likly to get problems

Next time don't play your PS4 for a very long time. Mine is vertical but up side down. If the other way it's also blocking air on that side. Horizontal is the best way to keep it cooled

Mine was horizontal. It did this out of the box on launch day - it was defective. The system fan didn't turn on. Since then I got it replaced, then got a slim, and now a Pro 👍

Guy Brohski Not bricked, far from it, just a corrupt firmware update. Simple solution is to boot into recovery mode and follow instructions that pop up on screen. Sad people make a big deal over such small things. You'll end up seeing such things on any console at launch. Nothing can work at 100% when mass produced.
