PS5 Dolby Atmos Gaming - Is it any good? Setup & Binaural Sound Test

It took some time, but finally on PlayStation 5 you will be able to take advantage of Dolby Atmos in games and not just for Ultra HD Blu-rays. In fact, if this feature has been available on Xbox Series S/X for a long time, only with the new system update available a few days ago does PlayStation 5 also add support for Dolby Atmos for games and video streaming apps with content in this audio format (Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+).

For games that natively support dolby atmos, like Astro's playroom you should set the main audio to dolby atmos in the main audio menu. For other games leave it to pcm. For dolby atmos using a bluray disc, you have to set the audio in the bluray player app option separately to dolby atmos.

By using PCM you will not have Dolby Atmos on the Marantz, set Dolby Atmos on PS5 is like a pass through and the only way to have Atmos on your AVR!

@@MadAudiofficial I justed tested this. On a non-dolby atmos game, setting it to dolby atmos will give you height sounds, but just its an upmix from left and right channels...thats why you should leave it on pcm. When I started Astro's playroom(full dolby support), with dolby atmos enabled in the sound option, I could hear a discrete audio signal coming from the upfiring channes that is not the same as left and right. Conclusion: only enable dolby atmos in the main audio when you are playing a game with dolby atmos support. Other games, leave it on pcm.

@@MadAudiofficial because letting it on all the time will create an upmixed dolby atmos signal, not what the director/maker intended. Basically you are getting audio from the height channels that are not there. The upmixing process can create an effect that was not intended by the game director. Only dolby atmos games will output a true atmos signals.

Mad audio, I recently subscribed to your channel, and I’m loving it. I have a question I saw your review on Marantz cinema 40 I’m wondering what would be your take on cinema 40 vs SR 8015. I know 8015 has more power but sound wise I wonder if cinema 40 is better as well as future proof. I’m debating which one to buy. Currently have Yamaha 3070 aventage.

You have to take in consideration that's only the ne Marantz Cinema series has Dirac Live, and if you have a good Dolby Atmos setup configuration is a game changer! I did a video about it 👍🏽

@giovanni1269 Dirac Live is a next level there is no doubt, where on 8015 you will need to move to Audyssey MultEQ-X Pro maybe to get closer results, but if calibration is not a must for you and you can find the 8015 for good money, why not. Plus if you take a look of my Cinema 40 review you will see that i add an external Musical Fidelity M6x 250.5 amp to get the right Dynamic that i was need so..hope this can help you, just let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, Astro Play, Call of Duty War Zone, Ratchet and clank ecc all working really good with Atmos👍🏽
