The term for having a high-priced option to drive sales to a lower-priced one is "price anchoring." It is definitely a real thing in marketing / price psychology. As long as you're waiting for higher-level cache or (worse) system memory, IPC and Clock rate don't matter because you're not doing anything anyway.

I don't think the comparison with the 3300X vs PS5 to prove that it can easily do 60fps is fair. 1 - chiplet vs monolithic 2 - 16MB cache vs 8MB and we know ryzen loves cache 3 - Zen2 had 4 cores CCX, and we've seen quite a few instances where the 3300X was faster than the 3600X (DF uses the 3600 as similar CPU horsepower to the PS5) 4 - Dedicated low latency ~51GB/s (3200MT/s) + whatever the GPU you want has dedicated to it vs shared high bandwidth high latency 448GB/s 5 - 3.8GHz (base) - 4.3GHz (turbo) vs fixed 3.6GHz Also, there are plenty of newer games examples that are very CPU limited and as mentioned, RT kills the CPU too

I really think the only reason the CPU had like 200MHz added to it was because they added alot more GPU instructions when it comes to BVH creation and traversal.
@syncmonism2 ай бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that part of the purpose of the larger cache sizes used with chiplet based Zen CPUs is to mitigate the potential latency penalty of the communication between I/O chiplet and CPU chiplet, so I believe you can get away with having a smaller cache with a monolithic Zen CPU, at least to some extent.

And the PS5 Pro would've been the definitive machine to do that. But in this use case scenario a disc drive is very important, because the used games market is extremely important to recover older gems for cheap. And having to shill more money over the alredy pretty high entry price is bugging me. I'm actually considering on getting an used fat PS5, that doesn't even require to activate the disc drive online. Why does increasing cache not boost IPC? When the ALU sits around waiting for data from RAM, its not executing instructions -> lower IPC. I guess any decomposition how much every piece in the puzzle increases IPC is pretty much irrelevant for every end user. What matters is instructions per seconds and instructions per watt. It is however of extreme interest for competitors and internal design teams. Not saying that its not interesting, I just think that for the average consumer, its not relevant.
@rattlehead9992 ай бұрын
because increasing cache capacity slows down its speed and increases latency at the same time, you need balance. So now the small instructions and data that don't need more cache are slower, but the bigger ones get faster. You need to balance it according to the width of the core.

It is less locked down then the average * modern laptop! No glue nothing. Send in a Apple product to Apple? Woops your life is uploaded to the social medias by the staff. And the SSD is soldered down to the board. So no way it is getting out of there. You are not even allowed to open it up without braking warranty... Pretty much the same with any modern laptop too. Apple walled garden. Android. FreeBSD... I mean Playstation OS. Xbox -1. Winblows support? That is a feature. Not a bug. Nice of Steam to add support of Windows still. Intel's instruction-density-based AVX512 throttling implementation was actually pretty stupid, so Bryan's AVX512-accelerated UI mixed instruction scenario adaptation probably wouldn't have happened even if Intel had kept AVX512 on their client Alder Lake/Raptor Lake CPUs. If an Intel processor sees a light sprinkling of AVX512 instructions, it will execute them non-accelerated (as a series of lighter instructions) without using using the AVX512 hardware. Once the AVX512 instructions hit high enough density, the CPU will preemptively throttle the CPU back to something like 2GHz and start to execute AVX512 instructions with actual AVX512 hardware because it generates so much heat. For loading games, it may be fine, but mixing AVX512 instructions in for UI? Well, either the AVX512 instructions run without AVX512 hardware acceleration (pointless) or your CPU throttles to like 2GHz in the middle of the game (disastrous). AMD doesn't Forest Gump their processors this way. You can mix in AVX512 instructions as little or as much as you want, it's always accelerated and the throttling is voltage/amp/thermal. For servers which perform specific tasks with very high AVX512 instruction density, the Intel implementation is not a disqualifying problem, the AVX512 acceleration is well worth the big frequency nerf, which is why probably Intel kept it for their server chips. AVX512 optimization help so much when you optimize for it that it's worth gimping your clock like that. When Zen5 Turin server chips come out, that +95% AVX512 instruction speed over Zen4 is going to be a hell o' lot o' fun for a whole lot of servers. Intel recently released an AVX512 optimization update for PostgreSQL a few weeks back (it was something like +40% speed boost or something). The jokes on the forums were like "Hey, somebody get down to the office and shoot those idiots! They just handed AMD the win!"

AVX512 is not a monolithic ISA extension there are a half dozen or more AVX512 instruction modules. (I have heard as many as 20 compile flags) Sort of like the modular nature of the RISC-V isa. To smooth this modularity issue with developers, Intel anounced AVX10 last year, which is not a new capability it is a new naming system and reorganization of the SIMD stack with every successive versioning being a superset of the prior version (eg AVX10.2/512 will be all of AVX10.1/512 plus a few features, and AVX10.2/256 would have the same features as AVX10.2/512 but limited to 256bit registers).

@rattlehead9992 ай бұрын
The GPU in the PS5 pro has 70%+ more CUs, but the bandwidth increase is only 28.5%, but at the same time RDNA4/3.5 needs less bandwidth. IDK what the bottleneck is if it's not the memory bandwidth, because RDNA 3 is 10-12% faster than RDNA2 per CU, RDNA 3.5 is 10-12% faster than RDNA 3 per CU and then you have 70% more CUs and lower bandwidth requirements...

I have a 5950X/128GB currently and was eagerly anticipating building a 9950X/128GB in Q1 2025, but the incredibly disappointing performance of Zen 5, especially the 9950X, and the excessive price premium over Zen 4 compared to the benefit completely killed my intentions. Also, getting 128GB of RAM to work on AM5 with good performance is just not possible with current motherboards and CPUs, and I don't want a downgrade in RAM. The new computer was not a necessary build but a "would be nice" secondary computer, but because of the high price and lack of gains gen over gen it just doesn't make any sense for me. I don't believe Zen 5 X3D is going to be any better either so I'm completely abandoning the build and waiting for Zen 6 instead. I'm going to put the money I was going to put into the Zen 5 build into buying a high end NVIDIA 5000 series GPU instead.
