Sony just unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro. A marginal difference in product, a massive difference in price. Who is this even for? I think I have an answer.

PlayStation (Japanese: プレイステーション, Hepburn: Pureisutēshon, officially abbreviated as PS) is a video gaming brand that consists of five home video game consoles, two handhelds, a media center, and a smartphone, as well as an online service and multiple magazines. The first handheld console in the series, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), sold a total of 80 million units worldwide by November 2013.[9] Its successor, the PlayStation Vita (PSVita), which launched in Japan in December 2011 and in most other major territories in February 2012, sold over four million units by January 2013.[10] PlayStation TV is a microconsole and a non-portable variant of the PlayStation Vita handheld game console.[11] Other hardware released as part of the PlayStation series includes the PSX, a digital video recorder which was integrated with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, though it was short-lived due to its high price and was never released outside Japan, as well as a Bravia television set which has an integrated PlayStation 2.
The PlayStation Network is an online service with about 110 million registered users[12] (as of June 2013) and over 103 million active users monthly.[13] (as of December 2019) It comprises an online virtual market, the PlayStation Store, which allows the purchase and download of games and various forms of multimedia, a subscription-based online service known as PlayStation Plus and a social gaming networking service called PlayStation Home, which had over 41 million users worldwide at the time of its closure in March 2015.[14] PlayStation Mobile (formerly PlayStation Suite) is a software framework that provides PlayStation content on mobile devices. Version 1.xx supports both PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV and certain devices that run the Android operating system, whereas version 2.00 released in 2014 only targeted PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV.[15] Content set to be released under the framework consist of only original PlayStation games currently.[16]
Seventh generation PlayStation products also use the XrossMediaBar, which is an Technology & Engineering Emmy Award-winning graphical user interface.[17] A touch screen-based user interface called LiveArea was launched for the PlayStation Vita, which integrates social networking elements into the interface. Additionally, the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 consoles also featured support for Linux-based operating systems; Linux for PlayStation 2 and OtherOS respectively, though this has since been discontinued. The series has also been known for its numerous marketing campaigns, the latest of which being the "Greatness Awaits" and eventually, "Play Has No Limits" commercials in the United States.
The series also has a strong line-up of first-party games due to PlayStation Studios, a group of many studios owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment that exclusively developed them for PlayStation consoles. In addition, the series features various budget re-releases of games by Sony with different names for each region; these include the Greatest Hits, Platinum, Essentials, and The Best selection of games. It is also known for the four iconic PlayStation face buttons.

The audacity Sony has selling this thing at $700 is astounding. They can’t even be bothered to include a stand or disc drive with the system. Sure the improvements sound pretty good on paper, but they certainly aren’t worth the $200 increase over the regular PS5 model.

And there’s probably not many games left to release since they take so long to make nowadays. Personally I might pick a pro up in 2-3 years when there’s more games out and it’s more reasonable to buy. No one in the uk is gonna buy this console we can barely afford to buy food and pay bills.

Sony lost millions making Live service games no one asked for. So Im not surprised they did something so greedy. The disk drive is 80 bucks usd, the piece of plastic they are using for a stand is 30 dollars. I would actually be willing to pay 800 dollars which I ended up paying for my Spidey console. If it had the disc drive, the stand, and a game bundled with it but considering they wasted time on live service games no one asked for there is no new game to advertise it.

I honestly couldn't care less about the stand either way; a standing up PS5 is just BEGGING to be accidentally knocked over and broken. I just lay mine down on a small table, propped it up with a book to stop it wobbling, and I'm hapy enough with it like that. There's no way I'm buying a console without a disc drive, though. And before anyone says it, yes, I know the PS5 comes with a couple of little plastic things that you're supposed to prop it up with to stop it wobbling when it's on its side... but f*ck those tiny, flimsy little things, quite frankly; the book I'm currently using to prop it up is more dependable in my experience.

I don't think it's for anyone. People who are still playing on the PS4 and haven't upgraded to the PS5 yet despite it being way cheaper than the pro, won't upgrade to the pro because of the price. For Context the ps4 pro sold at the base ps4's retail value, that isn't the case here so those people are out. I've heard people talk about this being an "enthusiast product", yet that doesn't track either. Enthusiasts are more often than not physical collectors, they like the physical games. They aren't going to want to pay for this, plus the price of the external disc drive, plus the vertical stand if they want that too. As for the casuals, they'll just stick to the more affordable option which is the base ps5 that they already have. So I cannot see who this is even for, unless Sony are banking on the elusive "modern" audience to pay for this. All 10 of them that bought Concord.

someone else was joking about it but yeah i’m genuinely convinced they’re trying to recover some of the money they lost with how much of a flop concord was (apparently they invested a fuckton of money making that one). the price will probably come down, but even then it’d be a hard sell. on the bright side, the ps4 pro ended with a pretty good selection of enhanced games by the end of it’s life, so i don’t think selection is gonna be that big of an issue actually. but yea overall this gen kind of lost sight of what the console market really wants and understands. lots of technical jargon and not enough practical examples to show for it. also astro bot is incredible, easy game of the year for me, unless the new mario and luigi exceeds expectations. i think comparing it to concord says everything about how the video game industry is shifting. live service games are falling out of fashion, ppl want finished, innovative games that are just simple, no-frills fun.

To be perfectly fair, almost no PS5 games these days truly run at native 4K. Especially in performance mode. So PSSR could definitely allow the PS5 Pro to be a 1080p 60 console, but looking like a 4K 60 one. Instead of a 1440p ~ 4K 30, 720p ~ 1080p 60 one. That’s doesn’t justify the outrageous price, but PSSR is the best new feature of PS5 Pro.

I think the PS5 pro was made with graphics w****s (the people who grew up playing PS3 or xbox 360 and would get into heated debates with each other over which platform had better graphical display) in mind hence why it pushes how well visuals and graphical fidelity looks on the platform and I'm sick of these people being the target audience. They don't really care about playing games they just care about how good the graphics and the fidelity to the graphics look, they want everything to be one for one just like the real world. These people are part of the many reasons why gaming sucks today and why we are losing physical media as the main way of getting our entertainment such as gaming (and why most games needs 20 plus patches to play properly). I don't need all need fancy enhancements to visuals for the game to be playable I just need it to function from the getgo.

And OG PS5's disk drive does actually work without internet so this is a problem with the removable/add on disk drives. So glad that last year I got an OG PS5 instead the slim one or waiting for the pro model!

e doesn’t realise that developing new Technology takes a lot of effort, engineering skill and cost a lot of money. Sony is a business and not a charity. If you don’t understand that, well nobody is forcing you to buy the new system. But if you want companies to invest in new ideas and develop new technologies you support them and buy it. Not even DF seem to understand this. They whine and call the new upscaling system “pisser”, giggle and act so immature. C’mon John, Rich and Alex, grow up and be professionals and objective. Cernys design is an elegant one, and I’m talking internals here. But being the pc guys they are they are in bed with Microsoft. I have the big three. No im not rich, i have a day job, I like technology and gaming. But I don’t want companies to stop developing great things for me to be part of. Of course it’s expensive. It’s an expensive hobby. Deal with it. Or start reading books, it’s free if you go to the library. Now, even I think they could have included the stand and the drive for a more complete package.
