This was written in the 50's after the Brown v Board of Education decision that was intended to abolish segregation in schools. In the 70s this was still relevant since actual de-segregation primarily in the form of busing was being implemented with a lot of resistance. A beautiful song in its own right but the context makes it even more special

Because there's ego and pride on either side. No need to know enough to accurately guess that you the man is black and she is white, or hispanic, or asian, or any other female race. There's more to it than just race, but because it's easy to play the victim the former is the easiest way to portray that.

"Black and White" is a song written in 1954 by David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson. It was first recorded by Pete Seeger featuring an African-American child, in 1956 from the album "Love Songs for Friends & Foes". The most successful recording of the song was the pop version by "Three Dog Night" in 1972, when it reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Easy Listening charts.

I started school in 1964 in small town La. there was 1 black kid in the whole place. the Supreme Court decision had occurred 10 years before. but much of the country( esp. the south) ignored it. a few years later, the family moved to Texas and saw virtually the same thing ( that town didn't fully integrate until 70. but I agree, there's been an enormous amount of change.

The African Canadian, black drummer for Three Dog Night was Floyd Chester Sneed who was born November 22, 1942 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and died January 27, 2023 at 80 years of age, was a Canadian drummer for the band Three Dog Night. He became interested in drums at at a young age. His first drum kit was gifted from his older sister Maxine who was married to the musician/actor Tommy Chong of Cheech & Chong who was also a Canadian. In 1966 he formed his own band and moved to Los Angeles, California. In 1968 Floyd Sneed met three vocalists Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells of Three Dog Night who were looking for backing musicians, he then joined their new band as drummer until it broke up in 1977. But he continued to work with other bands including a longer extended tour with The Ohio Players.

This song reminds me of being in the car with my mom in the early 70s listening to AM radio. It seemed so many songs at the time had nursery rhyme like qualities. Besides this one I think of Clint Holmes "Playground In My Mind" and Carpenters "Sing A Song". Maybe having songs so easy to sing along to helped to turn me into the music fan I became. As far as the subject matter of this, yes targeted more to adults. As young as I was I already took the subject matter for granted I didn't need to learn it from a song. I feel like you are born knowing this and only the culture or your environment can make you think anything different.

I was 13 when this song was a hit in 1972. It was only 3 years earlier, when I was 10 and in 5th grade, that schools where I lived (and in much of the country, particularly in the South), were desgregated. So, at the time this song was popular, black and white kids had spent most of their lives in a segregated world, and what seems perfectly normal now, was somewhat of an adjustment then for much of America. While there is still work to be done, we sure have come a long, long way, and that's why this song was popular and so relevant in 1972.

My sixth-grade year was 74-75. Every once in a while, we could bring in records to play if we had indoor recess. For some reason that today I can neither remember nor imagine, the school authorities made an announcement to the sixth-grade rooms telling us that playing this song was forbidden. The next thing I knew, we angrily flooded into the hallway in protest. Though I can't remember if they relented or not, for me the enduring image is seeing a hallway of a nearly all-white elementary school PACKED with yelling, angry six-graders gathered around an obviously shocked principal as he tried to calm us all down. Strange that I can't remember how it all ended. Wish I could.

I used to listen to this as a kid and loved it. I was born in 68 and I think this is 72. Can you react to another song from that time. Johnny Nash "I can see clearly now"

The first time I heard this beautiful song was on Top Of The Pops by Greyhound in 1971. It was good then and still is good now.

I think it’s a song that takes a heavy topic and makes it simple, it’s the way things can be and should be.

Heh, our elementary school music teacher was pretty hip! (around '72 - '74) We sang this song, as well as others, like "One Tin Soldier".

Actually written about 25 years before they sang this version. Sammy Davis Jr recorded this in 1955. It was written in honor of the ruling of Brown Vs Board of Education.

Are you listening America??? this song makes more since now than in the early 70's. I would add a child is brown, a child is red and all the colours of diversity. Sing it Corey, so today's generation can hear this!!!

This song was released in 1972. I started my sophomore year in high school in 1970 That was the year they started bussing in schools. Before then, I'd never gone to school with a black kid or had a black teacher. It was kinda tense for the first couple weeks until we figured each other out. (Weird? Yeah I know) Then we went back to what we did before. "Man, let's go down to turner park and smoke a joint!" lol

Loved Three Dog Night back in the 70's. Danced around our living room in the 90's with my kids when they were little. Just great music. Good for the soul.
