Cuties, is it a movie aimed at those individuals attracted to underage girls or is it a misunderstood art film that's really a critique of society pushing sexualization onto young children?
Like most thing I thought I would just bang out a low effort rant but as I started working on it, things becomes more and more involved.
Seems like because of the subject matter KZbin auto turned off comments. Hopefully they're back on.

That's kinda why I listen to them (JP's) while playing a Grindy RPG, both together reach the minimum brain stimulation to not feel sleepy. It also helps that JP's ramblings often are actually useful psychological knowledge. Meanwhile, Sitch and Adam's ramblings are just annoying because they don't just repeat opinions while pausing every 4 secs, if I even want to know their complete opinion, I've to listen to 5-8 hours of digressing for a point that could've been made in 30 mins. Which is what Sitch is at his best, when he makes these well scripted and highly edited videos, that's what made him big to begin with.

OK let's say we were making a sequel to 101 Dalmatians. In this version we want to show that the bad guy is bad by having them kill a dog. OK so now we have a few options on how to do this on screen. 1. Just imply it happens off screen 2. Show a dog, show a gun, pan away while a gunshot is heard. 3. Render a CGI dog and animate it getting shot. 4. Get a trained dog, or Andy Serkis in a dog outfit. Fire a blank and have him roll over. 5. Get an actual dog and a real gun. Then really blow his little brains out on film. Cuties went out, got actual kids, made these real kids do real lewd scenes, zoomed in on the actual crotch of an underage kid, and put that in their movie. You can make a movie about softcore child smut without actually making softcore child smut.

My main gripe is that Amy never gets punished for her bad actions, nor do the Cuties seem to be. Hm...
@idaaho
@idaaho 3 жыл бұрын
With other cuties I can understand. Cuties supposed to be this dream team to Amy, to show what she is missing out because of her oppressive and lame muslim family. Them getting away with crappy stuff serves to make them look more desirable to Amy so that part is fine enough. It's not like we see much of their lives outside of Amy so there is a good possibility that they do get consequences. Amy just hasn't witnessed that and so has overly positive idea of their lives. Actually we do get hints of them getting punished, from a teacher going for them about the flash freeze mob (their mildest anti social act) and their classmates do reject them for being scandalous. Also their personal conflicts and politics do cause most of the conflicts of the movie so you kinda could say they do get punishment of natural consequences from being bad friends. Still Amy's family is under reacting big time and it makes no sense. I mean come, she got caught stealing stuff repeatedly, making her brother take part of it and has generally been acting out, that deserves consequences in anybodies books and they supposed to be the oppressive religious side too. Them punish her harshly would actually serve explain why she keep going to cuties despite them being bullies and asshats. Also give more weight when she gets away with her convenient first period, one of the only scenes that I liked in this movie.
@Liquessen
@Liquessen 3 жыл бұрын
@@idaaho Oh! Thank you for this long reply! You make a lot of good points. Amy should definitely have been seen facing consequences for stabbing that kid, and for nearly killing the other Cutie member. I know that isnt the objective of the movie, but... Ah well. Nitpicking, maybe, but it annoys me.
@idaaho
@idaaho 3 жыл бұрын
@@Liquessen I don't think it's a nitpick this case. This movie is about a kid acting out and doing bad stuff so consequences or lack of them is absolutely essential for the topic. While attacking the bulimic cutie can kinda be explained by late in movie so no time for that, the earlier attack can not. She isn't getting realistic response from anyone and it's not good for story. Most stuff happens in vacuum and isn't carried to rest of the movie like well crafted story should.

I saw this damn Movie for 80 cringe-worthy minutes that I dumbed-down to almost half that because it was so tediously boring that I had to put my attention span on suicide watch. But you are entirely right. From what I did look at there was nothing about Society pushing children to sexualize themselves, but more about rebelling over something the kid don't like. The message that this movie gives is about adolescent rebellion only to just magically revert back into what they were rebelling for in the end to come to the realization that what she was doing was wrong. My guess is they said that it was about being against sexualization of young children because they needed to deliver a different message that people can get behind by. This movie is all about rebellion but it led to something about sexualizing their own bodies because that was their choice when there was a number of things that they could have done outside of it. I guess it wouldn't be all that meaningful if it was about a child exploiting their own body to keep herself from a meltdown that ended up happening through the course of the movie and she didn't even know why she was doing this only to find out in the end that what she did was wrong, but the creator of this Damned movie couldn't come up with anything better other than that because she's supposed to automatically know what she was doing was wrong. Given that the message of the story is rebelling against societal Norms only to come crawling back to it just because they instinctually know that it's the right thing to do and not actually learning a damn thing. But I suppose that would have been a bad message to send if that's what people took from it so they had to change the perception. I'm just guessing. I don't really know if that's the case but something else should have been done about this movie. It failed on delivering the message the Creator wanted to send, unless she did this on purpose just to boost reputation from the outrage.

One critique on your final conclusion Sitch, if it has no concrete message, if it has no entertaiment value, but despite not being overt pro-ped propaganda, it has some of the lewdest camera angles on sexualized minors you can "legally" watch, wouldn't it be better to just call the movie Ped-bait outfront?? Like, if the only people who could find anything of value in it are P3ds, and it was marketed to them in english, then it is a ped-bait movie. it just wasn't pro-ped propaganda because then it would be outright ilegal worldwide.

Oh gawd, I havent finished but I was afraid Stich would try to act like hes the "sane" rational one and "take the high ground" by giving the director the benefit of the doubt. You are spot on. But it is pedo bait, period. They interviewed over 600 girls to find a cast member, whether that is normal or not, I dont know. I doubt. But too much is suspect here. The camera shots show a clear exploitative pension for the crew. It has no value outside of this either way. I really hope he isnt doing what you make it sound like, disappointing. I am not an excitable guy, so I wont think its the end of the world, but I cant deny what I see. Netflix should never have shown it. It doesnt surprise me that France loved it. Fundamentalist Islam? Um, no, cafeteria Islam. My GF (a 'muslim' from Mali) not only had her father have 2 wives, but just recently 2 of her sister's husbands took second wives (one lives in Canada and one lives in France). Polygamy is for every Islamist.

Probably the best review I have seen of this thing. Most people that defend it focus on the intent of the movie of denouncing child sexualization, forgetting that you can actually fail on delivering the message and maybe even contribute to the problem. It reminds me of another french movie, "Blue is the warmest color" (or "La Vie d'Adèle"), based of a french comic about a lesbian couple. The director of the movie had the intent to normalize lesbian couples and sex. As a result the movie has ton of very graphic lesbian sex scenes and was heavily criticized for sexualizing lesbian relationships. The intention of the movie was noble, but the execution was so terrible that it could almost be considered a porn fetish. In the end, I feel that the only time Cuties success with its message is on the making of the movie itself. A bunch of adults film makers convinced a group of young actresses to appear in suggestive poses and dancing for shock value. That's the closest you will get with the "society pushing sexualization to children" message with Cuties.

The movie is about girls hitting puberty and exploring their sexuality while only having a shallow understanding of sexuality. They discover there is something empowering about exhibiting sexual behavior in how it strongly affects people around them and the girl's notoriety. They use sexuality to get what they want (manipulating the men in laser tag, being the cool rebels at school) and then they show a lack of understanding of sexuality, it's rules and nuances, by using it in ways that have unexpected, unpleasant results. For example she uploads a picture of her privates to her social media account because she believes power rests in her sex. She doesn't yet know that her whole society hates her explicitness, she only knows she can affect the world around her by using it. It was a dumb movie that shouldn't have been made. I don't think the director was trying to make pedo bait, I think she was trying to portray how the dancing made the girls feel, which was empowered. It was how they felt in their heads during practice coming in conflict with real world reactions.

I more or less agree. The idea and the premise were reasonable, it's just that the writer/director completely flubbed the entire project by (maybe accidentally, maybe not) actually exploiting a bunch of young girls, a main character that's pretty much impossible to care about (thus detaching the viewer from whatever message they wanted to convey through her experiences) and then the movie ends with the narrative equivalent of a wet fart.

Funny since I remember the director saying the film was inspired by her watching girls dancing similar to how it's portrayed in the film in France and saying that it was empowerment, similar to Netflick's original description.

Hmm, this presentation of someone being peer pressured to do something harmful and continuing to do so in spite of disapproving authority figures and ultimately wearing a costume in public display of this act before being somehow prevented from continuing it... this reminds me of something. This is like Joker. Society confirmed.

You know... I like slice-of-life Anime. To chill. The animation-quality and backgrounds are usually pretty good too, as that is part of why it shines, since there is so little happening. What's the point of this comment? - That kind of Anime has more structure and plot and sense than this crap. Which leads me to my verdict after your presentation & analysis: In the best of cases, the makers of Cuties didn't even know what they were making; especially taking into account their own words about it. In the worst of cases, this was a project to create high quality pedo softporn, disguised in the husk of a movie, proven by how incompetently it is structured, plastered together, reasoned and justified. Incompetence, or a good alibi?

Very good review, I think the best one I've seen on this weird movie. There is one thing that struck me you didn't mention is the total absence of fathers. Probably not what was intended, but I saw Cuties as a wild critique of ... feminism. All what the feminism promotes: "girls they wannahave fun", no fathers, sex is liberation, let's focus on our vagina, you go girl etc brings out the worse out of Amy. The only salute is run away from all of it. That brings to my little disagreement with your critique on the turning point. I understood it like this: the yellow glitter on scene is the same color code than the wedding. Both are equally bad. Plus their fantasy of being popular in hoeing backfires completely. Hence boom the shock, there is nothing to gain at doing that. Let's run away, because that's the perfect solution in life, you know, just run away and play with other kids and forget about the murder attempt, the violence, the whoring, just run away from it.

Goddamn what a good analysis of this, checked, double checked, and tripled checked, it's proven that the movie... if it even deserves to be called that- Literally falls in on itself. The only thing i could think of when I read the netflix summary for it was it was supposed to represent what children these days are becoming. The kinda typical 'Kids these days- when I was your age dresses went down to our ankles' look down of current culture and social media. But no it literally falls through on itself and she reverts from somewhere she hated? to a place she'd hate herself more to be?

If you want to get super meta, I suppose this movie could fulfill it's purpose of showing how society promotes this stuff, by promoting it and being accepted by (french) society. Don't know how they get around to the "It's bad" part from their end though.

There’s ways of getting a message across but with 11 year old kids is a bridge too far, at least if it cast with 17-21 year old actors the movie would have done much better and have no backlash at all.
