Portal Beta 2005 & More 2006 Content

This video is the available 2005 Portal Beta using the official Valve assets. The first 13 minutes of the video is 2005 Beta content and the rest is stuff that was made in 2006 such as earlier builds of maps from the retail game and developer test maps where they test portal collision and other mechanics.

I like how it's mostly half-life models and textures and then all of a sudden, the portal turret model is just there. also interesting how the portal stand thing has the final model but the gun in first-person has the beta model.

This wasn’t actually the case at the time. We didn’t have the stand asset so the game defaulted to the retail stand. Since this upload, we now have the stand from this time period.

There’s only some stuff I’ve managed to keep a hold of during the development of the mods which haven’t been released thus far. I’m hoping to actually put back into the mod community as I have a developmental pitch to make with some people more talented than myself. If successful, some stuff demonstrated in my more recent videos might get a release with some expansion past what I currently have.

I always imagined that if a version of the Portal Gun had showed up in the Enrichment Spheres, this is probably a good look at what it may have looked like. Perhaps if a Portal 3 does materialise, such a device might appear.

I believe it was more Valve using existing textures and assets just so they could define the puzzle and chamber layouts. The retexturing and remodelling would come later but as you’ll notice, the puzzles remain pretty much unchanged in the way they are completed. Due to this however, Valve chose to set Aperture Laboratories within the Half-Life universe.

Sorry for the late response, KZbin doesn't seem to notify me about comments on this video. Anyway, this mod I was running was running a mixture of mods in that it contained some leaked maps and content, remain content & the crosshairs. As of last week I factory reset my Windows 10 Pro PC but I believe I have a Backup of my mods in a folder on my external drive. I'll be sure to check and if it's there, I'll upload the mod for download :)

CosmiKazie The Xbox 360 could not run very well with the high quality portals so they had to change them to a lower quality version.

So I downloaded the Portal Prospekt 2005 mod, and the gun model seems to be causing a strange, glitchy blue sprite to float around the player. How did you fix that? EDIT: nvm, saw the rest of the video, you didn't fix it .-. sorry

This isn't the same build. Whilst in most of the maps the sprite didn't appear it did in a small number of levels. The Prospekt version will be updated to fix that error.

Logan I know this is 3 years old but this strange bug occurs even in last Portal update in steam. Sometimes it can appear without reason (I just restart the game, but it happens rarely), but always with impulse 101

Just placeholder assets whilst the puzzles were designed. Once they were mainly decided on level geometry, that’s when the dev team started development on what aesthetic they wanted Portal to have. In the September 2006 build, the aesthetic change is an enormous departure from this stage in development.
