Every fiber of my being wishes this game got a remake or sequel. The gameplay is fantastic, the characters are unique, the story is pretty good, and the artstyle encompasses the charm of what a lot of 90s and early 2000s anime had. At the very least, this should be rereleased worldwide.

Yu Yu Hakusho for the Mega Drive was programmed by Masaki Ukyo, who goes on to program Guardian Heroes, while Asuka120% was by Masatoshi Imaizumi, who went on to make Panzer Bandit. Both people worked on Panzer Bandit's older brother, the 1994 beat 'em up, Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force together. According to former Treasure designer Tetsuhiko "Han" Kikuchi, Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force and Capcom's Alien VS. Predator arcade game were the main inspirations for Guardian Heroes' design.

this game, along with Crisis Beat also by Bandai, were my very first import PSX games back in my teenage years. as I write this, tears of nostalgia flow from my eyes reminiscin of the fun I used to have with it and of how it pains me that since I've lost my copy & no store in NYC (import or otherwise)carries it I can no longer enjoy this magnificent game! big props go to ScHlAuChi for bringing me back to the best years of my life, if only for 1 hour.

This game just screams Guardian Heroes because it definitely reminds me of that game except you can’t swap 3 lanes (or planes as they’re called), only 2 in this one. Me and my brother had a lot of fun playing this one. Glad I have it on my PS3.

This game was my very First introduction to Anime, and I love every bit of it! The Style, the concept, those evironmental choices are spot on, story is simply GOOD, gameplay was solid that I repeat it often to reach the end, it was hard but worth it. Oh and what good is a memorable game w/o at least a Great OST, so refreshing to hear 👍 My brain cells dance at its tone! This was so my childhood, a great moment of inspiration that defined my generation, the Golden age of the Arts. As an old saying goes: "Nothing can ever beat the Classics"

Just by watching the video and never having played the game, it looks like it has great presentation with the graphics and music but really repetitive and simple gameplay-wise. Any opinions? It's only around $50-60 here in Japan, I'm thinking if it was really good it would cost more. But these longplays are often tool assisted which can trick a person into thinking the game is simpler than it really is.

Hey UHVGN! I used to have this one, actually - I think you're right, it's a bit simple. Beautiful looking of course, but I recall playing through the whole game basically spamming one combo over and over, and I used the fat character who threw grenades. That being said though... I actually kinda miss it and want to rebuy a copy, haha. Maybe you can help me with that?

It's only repetitive if you're spamming the same combo even tho there's a decent amount of combo variety.This is one of the best beat em ups for the system and is extremely satisfying to play.2nd place goes to Crisis Beat.

Well, I didn't like it a lot to be honest. It reminded me of Phantom Breakers quite a bit. And the latter was boring AF so was this one. 2 lanes. Why? How to they enhance the experince? Why does the fighting seem so paceless and random? There are basically 2 mobs though the entire game + one repeating miniboss. Wow, variety. At least there are bosses. The bootleg Sephirot-wanna-be is the only one posing any threat whatsoever and that's the second boss. The rest are easy. What is this kind of gameplay? It's so unbalanced, so repetitive (even by beat'em up standarts), so clunky and janky. And people were praising it as a hidden gem. Well, sometimes people can be wrong.
