What I’ve always loved about Gus was no matter how much he threw a fit about wanting out, he’d always come back for three reasons: one, he loves Shawn and no matter what he might say, he’ll always have his back. Two, whether he admits it or not, he has fun playing detective. And three, his ego loves being able to say he solved cases.

That's why I like in the Yin episode he admits that Shawn helped him live out _their_ childhood dream, not just Shawn's. He was built to solve crime, he's _the_ Jamaican Inspector Man. And the finale really drove home how traditional success isn't for him if it means giving up being a detective.
