Here’s a mini true story: I once forgot my jacket at the playground, there was a stack of lost jackets and I looked through them but I couldn’t find my jacket. So I decided to go outside, I opened the door but then realized that when I was going to go outside to get it, the door would close and the doors would lock, so I took a jacket from the lost jackets and placed it there to prevent it from closing. After taking my jacket I said “I’m sorry” to the jacket. I’m weird.

I feel like sometimes apologies are more saying "I understand" than "I want to be better for you". For example, when you are in a position of authority, and someone asks you to do something, and you can't do it because it is out of your range of control. You acknowledge the person and understand their request, but inform them that you cannot do more and feel bad that you cannot do anything about it.

I'm curious what other people think about saying "I'm sorry" when someone tells you they're having a problem that you know you can't help with. I have a friend that gets on my case for this because she sees it as accepting responsibility for their problems. And in a way it kind of is? Like shorthand for "I'm sorry that I can't help with that." I've tried "that sucks" but it feels dismissive. And "are you ok?" but as someone that suffers from depression I know the pressure behind that question. "I'm sorry" just feels right to me, anything else feels dismissive of their problem. Sometimes I use "Can I help?" but "I'm sorry" is the first thing I'm compelled to say when I feel like someone is having a problem I can't help with. And I'm just not sure if my friend is right about that being an unhealthy response or not.
@ihopeicanchangethisnamelat71084 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s like how if someone your friend knows died, you would say ‘I’m sorry’. It’s not, ‘I’m sorry, that was my fault’ it’s ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ or ‘I’m sorry you have a problem’. And at the same time, it’s ‘I’m sorry I can’t help you’ or ‘I’m sorry I can’t do anything about it’. It’s expressing your sympathy for them as well.
@sandrapatriciaoriguarios45892 жыл бұрын

"Is there anyone in your life who drains you emotionally?" Me: uh yeah, my fucking parents, and I literally cannot properly get away from either of them, because I live with my mom, and she keeps trying to force me to interact with my father(I'm ashamed to even call him that) while turning around and saying "you have a choice, and you have a voice, you get to decide how much time you spend with your dad" and THEN when I'm trying to make a point against her when she tries to force me to socialize, go somewhere I don't want to etc. she gets all pissy and suddenly "I am your mother, we are going" and I swear, she fucking WONDERS why I no longer like being near her! I mean, I'm kinda toxic and I am aware of that, but nothing pisses me off more than someone who is very obviously toxic and either doesn't realize it, or has such a fat ego that they can't admit it.

Some parents always are just flip flopping their arguments all the time and being hypocritical/toxic in the process. If you realize that's happening, you can break the cycle one day. They can't control you forever if you don't want to associate with them.
@gingerracoon72164 жыл бұрын
Armyforever 9597 thanks, honestly I'm a bit scared, because my brother is going of to college in a few weeks(in another state no less), and he's the only one in this bullshit family that keeps me sane! I'm absolutely terrible at keeping friendships, especially when I don't see them physically, because of anxiety I have no social skills and often have nothing to talk about, so I just decide not to try in the first place. It scares me that he'll be so far away that we might grow apart and never get to communicate. And hen he does leave, I'll have to deal with both of my parents alone; my mom is gonna get lonely bc I like putting my on mental health first by staying away in my room whenever I can, and my father is going to continue to force me to socialize with people I don't like and have nothing to talk about with, and the thing I hate most about him is that my piece of shut father doesn't see my social anxiety as a "good reason" *not* to socialize and stay at his house all day, the only way I can get out of him dragging me places I don't want to go is by using my Chronic Eudicardia(chronic hives itch no known cause) as a scapegoat. Just last year he wanted to drag me and my brother all over the city(I just wanted to sit on the air mattress I was sleeping on and draw) I asked if we could just go back to his house because I wasn't in the mood and didn't have the emotional energy to do anything else, and I added that the hives on my feet were beginning to burn, and this fucker says-- and I fucking quote "Well, not having the energy to go isn't really a good reason but, since your feet are burning I guess we can go back." And then sighs in disappointment like it's *my* fucking fault!! And what's more, a few days later he was dragging me and my brother to a New Years Eve party thing with his friend Harley(his hairdresser, he's chill so I didn't mind), and me and my brother were making Mac n Cheese using a really good recipe my brother found, I ended up doing a lot of the work(according to my brother) and I asked my father to help clean up and he said "well it's your job to clean up after yourself" and then I replied "well you're gonna eat some of it right? (There's a rule in our family that whoever eats, cleans, so that the work load is kinda balanced)" and replies "well yeah" and STILL refuses to help! Mind you, this took a lot of ingredients, multiple pans, and damn near two hours before we could even get it in the oven, and made one hell of a mess as he doesn't have much counter space. And then, when we get there, this fucker doesn't eat anything at all! The only ones who thanked me and my brother were Harley and his wife, and even they didn't eat any of it! So I was understandably pissed, as that was hours of work, and cleanup from me and my brother, all for nothing. And on the way back, he says "thanks for helping Duncan with the MAC n Cheese (dead name), even though he did most of the work." And me and my brother were in so much shock at the diminishing, sexist, bullshit he just said, but holy shit I had never been so livid, if we weren't in the car, I woulda slapped the shit outta him right then and there. And all that's only in the span of three weeks, there's countless other shit I could talk about, but I'd rather not make this any longer than it has to be. Long story short; both of my parents are toxic, but my damned father is the most disgusting piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with, and that coming from a butch who was bullied as a kid for having a broken leg, and being a ginger. God this world is bullshit. But honestly I'm just glad my brother is getting out while he can, he's going to culinary school, and I'll miss him, but I hope he does well. I doubt you'll have read this far, but if you have, thanks for letting me properly rant, it's been a scarily long time since I've been able to do so without hearing "I understand your anger, but you need to let it go"

Ginger Racoon took a while to read 😂 but don’t worry about that. And no you shouldn’t need to let go of ur anger, the people who told u that are just stupid af and doesn’t know how to help u or they think it’s no biggie. People like to compare pains and they may compare ur pain as nothing big. Which is not true because everyone’s pains is equally big in different ways. Now about this situation. Well you spoke a lot about ur dad but what about ur mum? It seems that u have more anger toward ur dad than your mum? Am I wrong? Please correct if I’m wrong. Btw I’m not a psychologist but I know how it feels when you want someone to talk to and I want to be able to help someone even if I can’t get that, you know what I mean right? Anyways if you want to rant more, I don’t mind, I’ll gladly listen to it(well read it but u get it). I can see that you clearly didn’t have a good childhood and it was probably traumatising I assume, again correct me if I’m wrong. And your parents being toxic is not helping at all. You have already been damaged emotionally and mentally when you were younger. And your parents continuing to do so, is obviously not good for your health. You don’t have to tell me but I’m guessing you might be in ur teenage years, I am too, and i just want to ask whether if there’s a reason why they are like that? Perhaps something bad happened to them for them to be like this to you? I know it’s about you, but first I’m trying to understand if perhaps the parents had a reason why they’re being like this towards you and obviously no reasons will be good enough for why they’re treating u like this as you are being affected mentally and emotionally, but I hope you understand what I mean? And sorry for the longggg paragraph😂 I was wondering whether you are able to leave with ur brother or not? Or is there any friends that are willing to keep you for sleepovers etc? Oh waitttt sorry I’m so stupid 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I just realised we’re in quarantine so never mind that. Well it’s gonna be really hard...I know this suggestion I’m about to make is gonna sound stupid to you but just hear me out alright? Have you ever sat down with your parents and actually spoke to them about how you feel and why you feel this and that and that you really don’t want to go out etc, you don’t have to go into details or anything, u can just give the brief of it. I know it’s a crazy thing to do, but that is one of the simple solutions you can do in this time, otherwise if there wasn’t any quarantining then I would’ve said that you should sleep over at ur friend’s house to get some space away from them and maybe take a walk if u want,to clear ur mind a little. It is proven that if you walk for a certain amount of time(I’m sorry but my memory is crap😅so idk the exact time) it helps lighten ur mood up. I’m not joking about that fact it’s true! But if you think talking to ur parents is not gonna work at all, and they won’t listen to you then let me know and you can continue to rant as well and I’m still here for you!

@Jay Smith ... Hi Jay👋🏻 ... I’m Eurasian ... 1/2 Swedish: 1/2 Chinese . . . I have what’s called porcelain skin ... you can see my veins and I was always told how beautiful my skin was, because it was blemish free . . . I became very self conscious and couldn’t accept all the compliments I would get every day. Sounds like a good problem to have, like “Mo money/ mo problems ...” 😣 ... I’m telling you all this because you seem to be unhappy about something else that doesn’t have to do with the color of one’s skin ... I was given up for adoption and the people who were supposed to get me and knew my heritage beforehand ... decided after seeing me, that they didn’t want me because I wouldn’t look like their natural child. They didn’t say it was because I looked💯% Asian, but I did. I had black hair and dark gray eyes and they were both blonde and blue eyed ... legally they were obligated to take me, but the director of the organization would never force a child on people who obviously didn’t want to be my parents and were showing their bigotry but hid it in saying how it was best for me to go to a different family. I’m grateful I didn’t look like I did at 2 ... blonde hair and almond shaped blue eyes😏 ... My parents told me God had made sure I went to the right family. They were white, but had dark hair and my mom had dark brown eyes ... I’ve got an older brother who was born looking exactly like what that family wanted ... I’ve never looked like anyone but me. I grew up in a town of about 35,000 people ... but no Asians ... I was called ... Casper👻 ... Ricer🍚 ... my “favorite” exotic🥡... by members of my parent’s family, who were careful not to say it in front of my parents ... even when I was very young, I knew some of them didn’t think I belonged. My brother ... never heard anything even close to reminding him, he was adopted. As if we needed to be reminded🙄 ... I have always acted as if it didn’t bother me ... I also pretended I was colorblind ... I was determined not to judge a person by the color of their skin. I know how it feels not to fit in ... even within my family. We’ve come a long way ... but recent events show us just how much farther we have to go ... I hope you don’t dislike me because of my skin. I couldn’t help it ... I even remember that they didn’t make cosmetics light enough to match my skin ... not a problem for a man, but what if I had acne, I wouldn’t have been able to cover it ... I still hate to have my picture taken ... I don’t ever look like the others and I cringe at the thought of everyone walking around with a camera in their hands🙅🏻♀️ ... I can’t imagine what horror that would’ve been. I’m sorry I went on ... I’ve had this bottled up for over 50 years ... I wish you all the best and I pray you will live long enough to experience racial equality . . .I wish I could say I will too, but I just don’t know anymore. You have your whole life ahead of you and you can be a part of the change ... your children will live in a different world... I truly believe that. God bless you Jay🙏🏻 ... Lisa💝 ~ TPWK ~ That means Treat People With Kindness ... @Harry_Styles . . .

Yes, the guilt tripping in my family is huge. I also never ever apologize to others anymore, and it annoys them big time 🤣. Asking for help once or twice a year to certain people in my family always ends in drama so I will never do it again. The other way around I am not helping out them anymore but it bothers them resulting in ignoring me.

Someone once said to me, "You apologize too much." My response was, "Sorry." Since then I made it a point to not be so apologetic over things I didn't need to apologise for.

I went through this situation too, whereas the person who told me to stop apologizing said my apologies made her feel guilty [however that works]. So...Y'know, I apologized...

Regarding the toxic friend topic: I have a slightly uncommon situation where my friend isn’t necessarily a toxic person, she’s just inconsiderate. It’s not like she’s mean or anything; she’s really nice and extroverted. I don’t really think she did anything wrong...The issue is, she can be extremely talkative and say some things that come out the wrong way. I’m sure she doesn’t mean it, but I don’t know how to tell her without sounding rude or aggressive. Another problem is that she can’t take a hint. Sometimes I need to take a break from her, but she constantly calls me and texts me everyday, saying things like, “Am I not good enough?”, “I’m sorry I’m such a big screw-up.”, “Do you hate me?/Are you mad at me?” And of course I’m not angry with her in any way, and I tell her this. I usually let her know that I’m out somewhere or just simply can’t talk, but whenever I respond late or don’t see her message, she spams me with these guilt-tripping messages. That’s why I don’t know how to confront her about this. And another thing, she often is rude with my parents or sister if she comes over at any time. She never addresses my parents, or straight up ignores them, and she doesn’t respect my sister’s space sometimes. I honestly don’t know what to do about her, and I sometimes wonder if I’m overreacting. I could really use some advice, especially if you’re in a similar situation. Thanks.
