The song is about a toxic relationship. He reflects back on the relationship and remembers her fawning and being so happy she could die while he was just resigned to be with her. She only remembers him screwing her over and making her feel like it was her fault. Think cheaters who gaslight their spouses into taking the blame for the affair. When she sings her part she stares straight at him while he closes his eyes and turns away, doesn't even look her direction till it's over. When she reminds him that he told her she wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know he sings over her with his but and drowns out her voice. You can view the paint as a metaphor for the relationship, he only becomes fully invested once the relationship is done whereas she leaves the picture. Brilliant song.

She even hints that while they were together, he was "hung up on somebody" else that he used to know. I love the graphics, too, and see them as a metaphor for his chameleon-like approach to his love life, which she sheds at the end, refusing to deal with the gaslighting and control.

Great take! I love it when people say he is so hurt, I always think wait, Kimbra will enter the chat. He's so bland until the red, which I believe represents his anger comes in with the chorus. In the end, she's over him and he still has his anger.

Every once in awhile a modern song comes along that is well written with real talent applied. I know, it is a rare event nowadays. This however is one of those songs and bound to be a timeless classic. Very well done and the video reminded me of the early days back when MTV used to be all about music videos instead of the shit shows they have now

I interpret the complaint from Kimbra's character about Gotye's character being hung up on somebody that he used to know wasn't referring to a prior relationship, but to her, the girlfriend that he had broken up with. She wanted a complete break, evidenced by changing her number, etc. He thought she meant it when she said during the actual break up that they "could still be friends", but that wasn't her desire, and she perceived any attempt of his to be more than "nothing" to each other as too much for her. She wanted to be "somebody that he used to know" and nothing more.

One of my favourite songs, Kimbra, the female singer is a New Zealand, I'm a 'kiwi' as well so it's nice for us to have a NZ'er with a song that has more than 1Billion+ views. Back when this song came out it was played Everywhere! I didn't mind, as the song is super relatable & the lyric's are simply & clear so it makes for better listening straight away! TY for playing it 🤗

You had a great take for this song. It's a song that displays both sides... but not really. You ALMOST get the full story from each side, but not enough to actually know who's in the right. I personally think the song is about when there is no right or wrong, things just didn't work.

He wasn't hung up one someone else that he used to know, he was still hung up on her after she became someone that he used to know, and she's throwing that to his face. So, like: Him: You can leave if you want, I don't even care. I won't even think about you after you leave. Her: Okay, I'm done with your crap. Bye. Him: Baby, why you being that way? you said you loved me! Her: And you said you didn't care and wouldn't think about me after I left.

My take? He starts plain naked, but as he sings his story it's increasingly colored by his personal narrative. And then as the story shifts to her, she begins as blended into *his* background, and then it reveals her story, and the paint peels back.

Not a group, just a one person band. Does it all himself, Wally Debacker aka Gotye. Features people on different songs. This is Kimbra, an up and coming NZ singer at the time.

My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation. Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and she "wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know". She could read into the words he said that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.

It totally irritated me that someone was still hung up on someone else. I've been there, I thought Oh they'll eventually get over them and we could progress but it didn't happen. Sometimes I felt like the 3rd wheel. As always a great response and reaction. ❤

Great comment. Look at it the another way Trevor, you may have stayed and become the 4th wheel. If it happened to you, it will definitely happen to the next person - and that person will be wondering why whom they are with is stuck on you, and so on and so forth. Look at it as a blessing - you're free and healthier for it. They're the ones trapped for never being satisfied 🌹🙏🏽🕊

That's why you have to rise up from your knees, step to the side then start walking forward leaving the sting behind. The stings pain will pass when you focus on looking forward rather than backwards where there really isn't anything of value to see -and once the monent is gone it's time to stride forward and start writing a new chapter 🌹
